LAW OF INVERSION
“Inversion means putting the verb before the subject.”
USAGE OF LAW OF INVERSION
1. When a sentence starts with ‘no sooner/ hardly/ seldom /
scarcely/ never / rarely/ barely / etc.’, use inversion.
Example: - 1- Never do they come here.
2- No sooner had the teacher come than the students kept silent.
2. When a sentence starts with ‘only yesterday/ only then / only
last year / in no way / under a tree /etc.’, use inversion.
Example: - 1- Only yesterday did he get the job.
2- Under a tree was lying an old farmer.
3. When “if” is not used in unfulfilled conditional clause in
present and past tense use inversion there.
Example: - 1- Were she a bird, she would fly to me.
2- Had he come to me, I would have helped him.
4. If a sentence starts with (so + adverb of manner) use inversion
there.
Example: - 1- So well did they play that everyone admired them.
2- So rudely did he behave that everybody disliked him.
