In Conclusion
While the democratisation of knowledge was taking place during
this period of profound thinking, women faced many challenges
during the eighteenth century. It was very much a man's world.
I do believe the salonnieres were responsible for spreading
knowledge, inspiring intellectual debate and giving women a
platform to share their ideas.
A Reading in the Salon of Mme Geoffrin, 175
There is no doubt that the debates and writing about gender
equality and the politically active women who arose during the
time of Enlightenment have helped even in our modern day fight
for equal rights.
The salonnieres were women who despite being confined by the
strict social codes they found themselves in, dared to be more.
Perhaps then, salonnieres were too modern?
