It tells the story of Andy Dufresne, a banker wrongly imprisoned in Shawshank State Prison for the murder of his wife and her lover. MAIN CHARACTERS Andy Dufresne (PLAYED BY TIM ROBBINS) Ellis Boyd ‘Red’ WARDEN NORTON (PLAYED BY MORGAN FREEMAN) (PLAYED BY BOB GUNTON) PLOT In 1947 banker Andy Dufresne is sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison for the murders of his wife and her lover and is sentenced to a tough prison. However, only Andy knows he didn't commit the crimes. While there, he forms a friendship with fellow prisoner, contraband smuggler Ellis Boyd 'Red’, experiences brutality of prison life, adapts, becomes librarian in shawshank prison library and also helps the warden in money laundering operation, etc., all in 19 years. After 19 years Andy escapes the prison through a hole he has been digging with the rock hammer for many years and spends rest of his life at Mexican beach. THEME Redemption, freedom, friendship, oppression, time, patience, loyalty, justice—and yes, hope. All are themes of this well-done and highly praised movie. FAVOURITE SCENE The favourite scene of this movie is when Andy dufresne escapes the prison through a hole he has been digging with the little rock hammer for many years and crawled to freedom through 500 yards of shit smelling tunnel and experiences the rain of freedom for the first time in 19 years. LESSON HOPE The first thing we learn from this movie is to never lose hope. Hope is a good thing maybe the best thing and no good thing ever dies. PERSISTENCE AND PERSEVERANCE The second think we learn is the persistence and perseverance are key to success like Andy digs and makes tunnel through his cell for long nineteen years with little rock hammer without giving anyone the slightest sense about it. The impossible wall would take 600 years to tunnel through but Andy accomplished it in just 20 years so persistence show us the way to come out of our darkest place.
