In this class I will be introducing the philosophy of Humanism. For this I have assigned prereading for the students so that in class we can discuss it as a group and complete a few
activities. For the first activity the students work alone and complete a word fill on the birth of
Humanism. The second activity the students will work in groups to complete a Humanism Tree
that I will provide the vocab for and show on the smart board, and finally, as a class we will
complete a worksheet on how 9 key areas changed from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.
These activities will help the different learners in the class, I have pre-reading, individual work,
group work with visual assistance and a whole class activity.

Understand and have a foundation for understanding the origins of ‘Humanism’.
Identify 5 areas affected by ‘Humanism’ and specific changes in those areas.
Write a description for each area of change (x9) during the Renaissance.

I will ask questions based on their assigned preview reading.
Students will complete the guided reading/word fill worksheet with a partner.
I will ask students what areas Humanism advanced and how it changed peoples thinking.
After discussing some areas of advancement students will complete Humanism Tree Map
in pairs.
I will then introduce the 9 areas of change that Humanism brought.
We will discuss these areas and how they changed from the Middle Ages.
Students to complete handout on ‘Humanism: Before & After’.
Students will be asked an exit ticket question – Name one area that Humanism advanced
and how it changed from the Middle Ages.
Teacher/Student Input: Write a note on what you expect the teacher and students to do as a part
of this activity. Include a note on whether this is an “I do it”, “We do it” or “You do it” type of
activity.
I DO:
I will introduce the topic and deliver content to the students. I will also supply students with hand
outs and put them into their groups for the class activities. I will ask exit questions at end of
lesson.

myself assisting and checking their understanding.

Throughout the lesson I will ask concept and open-ended questions.
Students will be answer questions in class via the ‘No opt out’ strategy.
Through the guided reading, Humanism Tree Map, and class discussion.
