Okay, now I don't want to alarm anybody in this room, but it's just come to my
attention that the person to your (0) right is a liar. (Laughter) Also, the person to your
(0) left is a liar. Also, the person sitting in your very seats is indeed a liar. We're all liars.
Now how is this relevant to our novel, well, I’ll explain in a moment. Ummm, Actually (0)
I can’t find a relation but lets just move on. Now let’s talk about one of the most iconic
novels presented by shake sphere, (0) “As You Like It”. A novel that stands out thanks to
the employment of the characters, the outstanding location, and especially the sharing
of (0) “Love”, a fact that can’t be denied. Act 5 Scene 2, a rather iconic scene, is a scene
potent (great power or effect) with (0) dramatic irony and humor. The scene opens up
with a dialogue (0) between the two brothers, Orlando and Oliver. The young one
(Orlando) asks Oliver if it is possible that he could have fallen so instantly in love with
“Her”. Later on, we conclude that “her “is to be (0) Aliena aka Celia. Oliver then decides
to give their father’s estate to Orlando. You’d ask why, ima tell why. Oliver is doing this
due to the fact that he thinks the Aliena is a shepherdess and so may be giving up his
"courtly" life in order to be with her. In this section, various themes can be highlighted
including “Love and rivalry between relatives”, “Country vs city”, and most importantly,
(0) “Romantic Love”.
The scene continues, where (0) Rosalind enters, and Oliver departs.
Orlando claims that Ganymede-pretending-to-be-Rosalind can no longer satisfy his
longing (a yearning desire) for the real Rosalind, though of course Ganymede is, in fact,
the very person for whom he longs. In this section, the theme of Deception (Trickery),
disguise (mask), gender, and most importantly (0) “Romantic Love” is shown.
Moving on, Rosalind responds that that she is skilled in the art of magic and
promises that, if Orlando loves Rosalind as much as he claims to, he will be married to
her tomorrow at the same time when Oliver marries “Aliena.” Where in actuality, all she
needs to do in order to bring Rosalind to Orlando is to simply remove her costume. In
this part, we also should know that the theme of “Romantic Love” has been shown
through the speech that was given by Ganymede to Orlando.
Silvius and Phebe enter, and Phebe says that she's upset that "Ganymede" shared
her (0) letter. Rosalind again tries to persuade Phebe to love her faithful shepherd,
Silvius. Silvius then defines love as “all made of sighs and tears…of faith and service… all
adoration (love), duty, and observance…”, and proclaims himself to be all of those things
for Phebe, just as Orlando is for Rosalind, Phebe for Ganymede, and Rosalind for “no
woman.” All the lovers (0) unite under the cause of “overwhelming love”.
Rosalind resolves the scene by telling (0) everyone what will happen the next
day: Orlando, Silvius, and she (i.e. Ganymede) will all be married; and she (i.e
Ganymede) will satisfy Orlando, content (please) Silvius, and marry Phebe if she ever
marries a woman. Silvius, Phebe, and Orlando promise not to fail to show up the next
day at Oliver's wedding. I repeat again, in this section, the theme of (0) romantic love is
shown strongly through the action of the characters.
Wow, that was a long one, we’ve finally discussed this scene, but not so fast, I’m
not done. Spare me a couple of minutes and let us work together to find a connection
between love and what I started with at the beginning, “lying”. Now let’s define (0) love,
can you share a couple of definitions with me. Ok Great, now if we were to combine all
of your definitions, then love would mean (0) “a genuine, deep, and intense feeling
between two people or more”. We are going on the right track, now let’s define a (0)
“lie”. Now who would like to help me in defining lie. Ok now if we were to rephrase
what you’ve said, then a lie is a (0) “deceitful statement made to benefit a side”. Now
were done with definitions, now can you conclude something, not I say. Now if we were
to combine a “lie” with “love”, then it would mean that it is a “deceitful feeling shown to
one side in order to benefit the other”. Now don’t we use the phrase (0) “I love you” a
lot. I’m pretty sure that every single one of you have used it. But is it “genuine love” or
just a phrase on the tip of your tongue? I don’t think its genuine, but rather think of it as
a complimentary phrase, or perhaps “love at first sight”. Meaning that “love” can be a
“lie”, most probably in case of “love at first sight”. Which in the novel, strikes to be the
love between Aliena and Orlando. Now (0) look around you again, aren’t we all liars.
