Symptom
This is a collective note which groups all relevant information on BW source
systems and provides some general information in this context.
Other Terms
BW, source systems, OLTP, database copy, client copy, system infrastructure,
transport, connection, RFC connection, Trfc, transfer structure, IDoc, ALE
Customizing, logical system name, system changeability, renaming in systems,
system copy
Reason and Prerequisites
A Data Warehouse is by nature connected with other system to a high degree. On
the one hand it is connected to many source systems and on the other hand it is
sometimes used as a source system itself for additional Data Warehouses, so
called DataMarts
These facts have the consequence that changes to one system in a group can
hardly ever be considered separately because all connected systems are affected.
Examples for such critical changes are:
• the system changeability (see Note 184586)
• the logical system name
• copying systems (see Notes 325525).
Solution
A BW source system connection consists of a number of single connections and
settings which are made on both participating systems.
• The RFC connections
• The ALE- settings, these in turn consist of:
• the partner declarations
• the port
• the IDoc types
• the IDoc segments
• The BW settings

Due to this vast number of settings it is hardly possible to manually create or
repair a BW source system connection correctly.
The logical system name
It is of particular importance together with ALE settings (and therefore with BW
source system connections):
The logical system name is used as a unique name of a system in a system
group. Therefore, two systems may never have the same name as long as they are
connected to each other directly or indirectly as BW or source systems. For this
reason it is useful to assign identical names to test and production system. This
simplifies copy procedures from production to test systems considerably (see
Note 184447).Changes of the logical system name are only allowed if the system
is not connected to other systems, since the name change has the effect that the
connections to all other systems no longer function.
