Questions about Logic (Logos)
1. Look at Kowalski’s “How to Handle a Bully”. Which claims are particularly well supported? What kinds of
support are provided? Which is most convincing? How does Duncan (“Key Policy Letters”) support his
argument?
2. Identify counterarguments that the authors don’t consider.
Questions about the Writer (Ethos)
1. Who is Arne Duncan? What is the occasion for this letter? Why does he have credibility in writing about
guarantees under the Equal Access Law?
2. How does Kowalski’s, “How to Handle a Bully,” appeal to ethos?
Questions about Emotions (Pathos)
1. Look at Kowalski’s article and Duncan’s letter. Identify pathos and explain why it affects the reader
emotionally.
2. Do your emotions conflict with your logical interpretation of the arguments when you read Kowalski?
3. Do you think your own experience (or lack of experience) with bullying makes a difference in your view of
the pathos of this article?
4. Now look at the article that you found independently (from Activity 3). What appeals to ethos, pathos,
and logos does it make?
Now read “Excerpts from The Bully, the Bullied, and the Bystander” and answer these questions:
1. Who conducted the study described in the article?
2. What percentage of children say they get teased or bullied?
3. Are Dr. Pepler and her colleagues credible to conduct and interpret studies about Bullying? Why or
why not?
4. What is racist bullying, and how is it learned?
5. What is sexual bullying? Do the statistics surprise you? Why or why not?
6. What did students from Tennessee do after the Columbine shooting?
7. Explain Dr. King’s quote at the end of the article.
