Running head: TREATMENT PLAN 1 Black Family Treatment Plan Maggie C. Cresswell Mississippi State University TREATMENT PLAN 2 Treatment Plan History The Black family has 6 family members, but the identified patient is Ronald Black. He is a 16 year old suffering with alcoholic abuse and regular drug use. He is a popular young man, very intelligent and athletic. His drinking has recently gotten out of control. He is a parentified child and his mother depends on him for support. He blames her for staying in an unhappy relationship with his father. He has twin brothers who are 14, Fred and George. They are average intelligence and athletic. They tend to be trouble-makers and tend to irritate their older brother. They are aware of the tensions at home. Ginny is a 12 year old girl who is very fond of her father and tends to withdraw when her family experiences conflict. She tends to not confide in anyone and is envious of Ron. She has a new older boyfriend who is pressuring her to engage in sexual activities and she has no one to talk to about this, as the family’s attention is all on Ron. Ron’s father, Tim, is a teacher. He drinks and suffers from dysthymia. He does not believe in counseling or medication and is incredibly critical and judgemental of his wife and children. He says that Ron has brought shame on their family with this addiction. He and his wife have a very tension filled relationship. Jennifer, Ron’s mother, is a school counselor who is suffering from depression and disordered eating. She worries about Ron turning into his father, as he becomes very angry when he drinks. Description of Problem and Diagnosis Ron’s presenting problem is alcohol addiction. Tim’s diagnosis is dysthymic depression. Jennifer suffers from anorexia and depression and potential anxiety. Intervention TREATMENT PLAN 2 The primary intervention that will be used to help our client’s alcohol addiction and family issues is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This therapy is solution focused and works on changing the client’s thoughts and behaviors which, in turn, affects their feelings. CBT focuses on helping the client’s become their own therapists as they work through various techniques and exercises, learning an array of skills that help them work on changing their thoughts and behaviors. I think this would be very beneficial with this family while working through their issues and changing their ways of thinking and behaviors. Medication might be needed for Tim and Jennifer both. I believe that an SSRI or Anti-depressant might be the most effective medications. I am not sure about medication for Ron yet until after he has been sober and works through psychotherapy for a while. Lines of communication must remain open during the family therapy, and each individual needs to talk to one another about what they feel about the family issues. Jennifer might need to go to a treatment center as well, if her anorexia is not treatable through psychotherapy solely. Major Treatment Goals Major treatment goals are to maintain Ron’s sobriety, ease family tensions, create family support, treat Tim’s dysthymia, and Jennifer’s anorexia. I believe that this is attainable by family therapy, individual therapy, and potentially medication and Ronald continuing treatment and then eventually attending a regular 12 step program.. I hope that this is attainable within the next year.
