Book Report

INTRODUCTION

I read Lupita Manana by Patricia Beatty. This book is all about the struggles that Lupita and her brother pass through, after their father died, to go to the U.S.A. and to earn money to support their mother and their younger siblings. I like this book because it narrates a real-life situation that most Mexicans are faced with in the U.S.A.

SETTING

The story probably took place in the twentieth century, because as it is mentioned in the book, there were overhead roads in the USA. There was no mention of phone in the entire story. Writing letter was the only means of communication to distanced places. If there had been telephone Lupita and her brother would have probably called their mother in Mexico.

Mexico and USA where the main settings of the story. The Torres in an old pink-painted adobe building in Ensenada. Ensenada is a small-town surround by hills and on a peninsula in Mexico. After their father had died, Lupita and Salvador went to the USA to live with their aunt,

Consuela. There in the USA, there were lot of things that weren’t in

Mexico. There were overhead roads, lot of cars, nice buildings, and most of all lot of gringos.

Lupita is the main character in the story. She is a thirteen-year old girl with brown complexion. And she is thin in body size and has long black hair.

MAIN CHARACTER

To discus some of the main character traits of Lupita;

*She was strong – as small as she was, she was able to walk from

Ensenada all the way to Tijuahna and was able to work on the gringo’s harsh fields harvesting crops.

*She was ambitious – Lupita had the dream of becoming a teacher.

*She was hopeful – Her mother called her Lupita Manana because she thought that tomorrow will be better than the day before.

CONFLICT

The two main conflicts in the story are man against nature, and man against man. Lupita had to face the death of her father and was forced to travel to the USA to find job. This is an example of a conflict between a man and nature. On her way to the USA, she encounters struggle with robbers, cayote, and la migra. This is an example of a conflict between a man and a man.

Main Event

The main event of the story was where Lupita and her brother went to the bail on Saint Valentine’s Day. The boy who was to dance with her abandon her and she was left alone. So, she decided to go to the restroom. On her way out the restroom, suddenly she heard the music stop. There was pronouncement all over the place that la migras have come. They said everyone should remain in their positions but Lupita being closer to the restroom door, manage to slip back in the restroom.

The la migras caught her brother because he was not able to answer their questions in English.

Lupita was saved. She was not caught by the la migra but now she had to learn how to speak English if she wanted to last a longer time in the

USA.

Conclusion

The author’s purpose of writing is to entertain and inform the readers about the struggles and poverty of some Mexicans. She also explained what are some of the reasons most Mexicans go to the USA and how they get there.

How the story affects me?

I was entertained by the story. It felt like I was watching a movie. Every chapter had its own color and mood. I also felt sorry for the Mexicans who are in severe poverty and who are struggling to find solution to their problem by crossing the American border.

Would I recommend this book to a classmate?

I would encourage everyone to read Lupita Manana because it is an amazing book that entertains its readers. It also gives information about how other people live in other parts of the world.
