Colonialism, capitalism and imperialism
- Colonialism and imperialism have ongoing reverberations today.
- These processes are linked to massive global change.
Exploration and colonisation
- Intention was often:
- Find new territory
- Compete with other countries for resources
- Search for knowledge to enable acquisition
Colonialisation: the establishment and maintenance of political and legal domination by a state
over a separate and alien society.
Imperialism: Extension of the power of a nation through direct or indirect control of the
economics.
Capitalism: A historically specific economic system in which production and distribution are
designed to accumulate capital and create profit.
Globalisation today:
- Greater speed
- Larger scale
- Scope is broader = economic, technological, political, legal, social and cultural.
- High complexity in interactions and interdependencies.
Contemporary Globalisation:
- Commodity chains
-Networks of labour and production processes that originate in the extractions or
production of raw materials which result in the delivery and consumption of a finished
commodity.
