Lecturer: Zahida Khattak Dated: 8th March, 2019 Day: Friday Timings: 12:30 - 2:00 Characteristics of Communication: It is a human process It is an active process It always occur through a proper channel The non-verbal communication is always on-going along with verbal communication There is always a respond to specific Behavior Communication is symbolic and arbitrary There is no fixed respond to symbolic communication Types of Communication: i. Intrapersonal Communication: ii. Interpersonal Communication: iii. This type of communication can be between more than two people but those people should constitute a small group. E.g. Presentation in a classroom. Public Communication: v. It is also known as Dyadic Communication It is the interaction between two people. It may be in form of pair work. E.g. working with your friend on some project. Small Group Communication: iv. This type of communication is with oneself. Internal listening. Communicate with own self. E.g. Introspection Interaction with a large group of people. This communication is sometimes between unknown audiences too. E.g. Political Seminars, educational Seminars etc. Mass Communication: This type of communication occurs with the help of electronic/social media. E.g. Email, Facebook, Whatsapp etc. Functions of Communication: i. Physical needs (health): ii. Identity needs (understanding own self): iii. Knowing oneself is the key to effective communication because as you start understanding your own self you develop the skills to communicate with others. With the help of intrapersonal communication we can know our self. Social needs: iv. Communication is very necessary for health because without it a person can become victim of stress, tension, depression and anxiety. This is scientifically proven that people who have lack of communication have risk of 3times earlier death than the real death. Sometimes the Psychological issues arising from lack of communication can become physical issues. Our behaviors and interaction with our society shows what kind of person we are and what other people think of us. An effective communication with society will create a better image of us. Our communication skills as well as others communication skills help us in determining whom to include in our social circle and whom to exclude. Practical needs: Whenever we are in a practical setting we need to communicate in order to understand how to perform the practical. Communication is very necessary to work in a practical way.
