Introduction
 Stoll (2002) defines truancy as “absence from school
for no legitimate reason”
 For Peninsky (2000), truancy is consistent absence
from school for many days, weeks or months.
 Truancy therefore is the act or instance of missing
school without permission.
Introduction. Contd
 Truancy can occur in boring and boredom classes
and non conducive school environment (Osarenren,
1999).
 Some students become truant because of peer
influence.
 Truancy can be caused by crave for vocational work
(carpentry, mechanic e.t.c) to meet needs.
 Political thuggery pushes students in to truancy.
Statement of the problem
 Truancy makes student’s performance negative.
 Habitual truant is likely to perform poorly.
 Poor performance may lead to dropout.
 High rate of dropouts may increase social vices in
society.
Research objectives
 Find out the strategies used by teachers to
discourage truancy among senior secondary school
students in Gombe state.
 Determine the attitude of teachers towards the use of
motivation to discourage truancy.
Research questions
 What are the strategies used by teachers in
discouraging truancy among senior secondary school
students in Gombe state?
 What is the attitude of teachers towards the use of
motivation to discourage truancy?

truancy
 Use of motivation in discouraging truancy is rather
rare

 The instrument to be used for data collection will be
a questionnaire to be developed on a 4-points Likert
scale.
Methodology. Contd
 The instrument will be face validated by three
experts.
 The reliability will be tested on Cronbach Alpha
using test retest.
 The structured questionnaire will be administered on
the sampled population to collect data.
 Descriptive statistics will be adopted in the data
analysis.
