The power of
“Oh Well”
The dictionary says….
You say oh well to indicate that you accept a
situation or that someone else should accept it,
even though you or they are not very happy about
it, because it is not too bad and cannot be
changed.
When is ‘Oh well’ useful?
Oh well can help you to accept and get over a
situation that you are not happy about but cannot
be changed or is not important enough to bother
changing. Oh well is used as a replacement to
whinging and whining.
Oh well can be used to take the pressure out of a
situation where there is nothing that can be done
eg. missing a goal in a sporting situation
When is ‘Oh well’
not useful?
When something can be done about the situation:
Instead of saying ‘Oh well,’ work out what needs to
be done and do it!
When the situation is particularly bad!
What are some situations
where you can use ‘Oh well’
You spilt milk
You missed a goal
You lost/damaged your favourite toy
Got a dirty shirt
Not being able to achieve a certain mission in games
Accidentally deleted something
Getting nutmegs and being embarrassed
Getting kicked in the face by a ball
Dropping a mark while being tackled
When Dr. Who is not good
Forget to bring something to school
Now you try it!
1. Write your own situation/s where
using ‘Oh well’ would be useful.
2. How would using ‘Oh well’ help
in this situation?
3. Create a role play based on this
situation
