TATA FAILURE The Tata Nano is the cheapest new car in the world. At $2,400, it was supposed to bring motoring to the masses in India. The problem is that the Nano is failing. While Tata did succeed with meeting the price that they set for themselves, they created a whole other problem by doing just that. As Technology Review reports, the car is being viewed as a glorified tuk-tuk, which is the three-wheeled runabout synonymous with developing nations. Tata is finding that the people the car is targeting, lower income masses of India, do not want the stigma of owning the cheapest car in the world. Many of them are stretching their budgets when making a purchase just so they do not have to say that they have the Nano. Ratan Tata, the company's leader, had set ambitious sales targets of 20,000 per month, so 240,000 per year. In the last fiscal Tata sold 70,000 of the car. That is not even close. While Tata is trying to make some moves so the car will appeal to the lower classes, such as displaying them in supermarkets and adding hybrid and diesel variants, the Nano is still languishing in showrooms. Mr. Tata gives out an award each year for the best failed idea. It is quite possible that he will be giving it to himself this time.
