ACADEMIC PROJECT 1. Setting goals is important. Goals can be long term and/or short term. I have set the following academic goals while I am a student at North Carolina State University. A short term goal is to not miss class. Attending class is an important part of being a college student. If I am in class I will hear the material my professor is teaching. I do better if I go to class. I want to try to maintain a good GPA. I would like to make the dean’s list. By making good grades, more opportunities will become available to me. I will set aside time to ready, do homework and study so I can achieve this goal. If I find I am struggling I will seek help and tutoring. I will try to get to know my professors. If I need help I will meet with them for one on one time. 2. I plan on taking Biology over the summer. Depending on how I do in my current math class, I may also take math. I am looking into doing an internship with a local Agricultural Extension Office in my hometown of Sanford, NC. I have spoken to the office and they said I would be paired with a local agricultural extension agent. He would serve as a mentor. I would help to develop and deliver educational programs to assist people in economic and community development, leadership, family issues, agriculture and environment. If I am able to get this internship, it would help me determine if this is the actual field of agriculture I want to go into. Hands on experience would allow me to make this tough decision. 4. A study abroad opportunity that interests me in Italy. It is an International Agribusiness program. I could take International Agribusiness courses. The study includes Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors. The experience is May 15-31. The cost is $3,075.00. Studying internationally would allow me to learn about and examine agricultural business in an international setting. I would be able to see the differences in ideas and attitudes of people in my filed that practice the job outside the United States. 5. Agricultural and Extension Education Club. This club would help me to develop the necessary traits ad personality to do well in my chosen profession. I would also be interested in joining a fraternity. I have not really met a lot of people on campus and I feel a fraternity would help me become more sociable. I would like a fraternity that is service based so I can help others. When I moved in there were several fraternities there to help. I was very impressed by this. I am also interested in intramurals. I like basketball. This is my first semester at NCSU so I am still trying to get used to the school. I plan to join a club and sign up for intramurals I the fall of 2018. Intramurals would be a good stress reliever for me and would also be good exercise. I would also help me to meet people. 6. An undergraduate research opportunity is a research internship with Altria. The intern would be paired with a faculty member to work on tobacco research on NCSU’s campus. The research involves developing and marketing tobacco products in partnership with the FDA to produce less harmful products. I have worked in tobacco in the summers since I was 14 and I have some knowledge about tobacco. You apply by filling out an application and submitting the application. Three students are selected. This would add value to my education because I would be doing hands on work and also exploring a possible job or type of job I may want when I graduate. 7. NC State offers a lot of resources for helping students. I was surprised by how many. I have and will continue to use the writing center. My study habits are not where they need to be. College is nothing like high school and I find myself struggling at times. The writing center has been a big help to me for English. I also will use the tutorial center for help in math. Math has always been my best subject but as of right now it is my most difficult. I am not used to having to reach out for help but am thankful it is there. I chose the writing center because I am not good at writing papers. I chose the tutorial center because they offer drop in sessions and I am struggling in math.
