Cover all of chapters 1 through 7 as noted, chapter 9 and Appendix A:
1. Straight Lines, slope, intersections, and Linear Functions. Sections 1.2, 1.4 can be done
together, can be done after Chapter 2 prior to Chapter 3.1.
2. Systems of Linear Equations and Matrices. (Matrices are review from College Algebra, pace
quickly). 2.1 – 2.7
3. Linear Programming: A Geometric Approach. 3.1 – 3.4
4. Linear Programming: An Algebraic Approach. 4.1 – 4.3
5. Math of Finance: sections 5.1, 5.2. (optional 5.3)
6. Sets and Counting. 6.1 – 6.4
7. Probability. 7.1 – 7.5, (7.6 Bayes’ Theorem optional)
8. Probability Distributions and Statistics (optional topics)
9. Markov Chains and the Theory of Games. 9.1 – 9.5
Appendix A: Introduction to Logic. (order for this topic to be integrated into course is to be
determined by instructor)
Not all sections will require the same amount of time. It is a good idea to devote more time to chapters
6 and 7. Students who have a relatively easy time with the previous material often find probability
theory confusing and frustrating.
In addition to the textbook material, spend some time training students in the use of technology, such
as Excel or the TI 84+ or similar software in solving linear programming problems. The course outline
states that spreadsheets will be used relating to solving linear programming problems. For this purpose,
you may use the handout “Linear Programming using Excel”, found in the Mth125 course page in the
Math Department Handbook.
