COMPERATIVE ANALYSIS OF NEWSPAPER GROWTH IN THE ERA OF MISSIONARIES AND SETTLER ELEMENTS. This written analysis is to show the works or some of the works done by the early missionaries and settler elements in the contribution of the growth of newspapers in Nigeria and society. [The comparism between the Missionaries and Settler elements]. First point to be brought out is that the Missionaries came to Nigeria to publicize their religious belief and speak largely about anti-slavery with their newspapers. While the Settler elements came to Nigeria to produce newspapers just to make profit. Second point, The common factor with the missionaries was that they all came to Nigeria with their printing machines. The Missionaries also established newspaper to teach our people how to read and write,[the first newspaper “IWE IROHIN FUN AWON ARA EGBA ATI YORUBA] the newspapers were printed in English and Yoruba [BILINGUAL]. While the Settler elements also used their newspaper to fight colonialism that got us our freedom. [JOH N PAYNE JACKSON “THE WEEKLY RECORD PRESS”]. Third point, the Missionaries established printing schools to teach about printing and publication, to also reduce illiteracy in the society\environment But the Settler elements newspapers made rich business men get interest in printing and publishing and the brought about the first rotary press and modern, advanced, efficient printing machines into Nigeria from England that made it easier for newspapers to go far wide.Today, printing industries are driven by Hi-tech computers for better and faster printing of newspapers. With all this comparism and differences, the Missionaries and Settler elements had the same goal and that goal was that they all published their newspapers for the betterment, improvement and progress of Nigeria. All the Settler elements also had a thing in common. They all worked under or with a Missionary [REV.HENRY TOWNSEND]. Another similarity there with the Missionaries and the Settler element is that both the Missionaries [REV.HOPE WEDDEL ESTABLISHING THE FIRST PRINTING SCHOOL IN CALABAR] and Settler elements [ROBERT CAMPBELL ESTABLISHING HIS OWN PRINTING SCHOOL IN LAGOS] both established printing schools in Nigeria. Consequently with all that have been said to this, the growth, birth and development of Nigerian press can be traced to little rain drops of a Missionary [REV.HENRY TOWNSEND OF THE CHURCH OF MISSIONARY SOCIETY IN 1859].
