Lab Report: Metric System Lab Open-ended Questions
1.) What is the mean, median, range variance, and standard deviation of he following data
set; 22, 19, 21, 18, 15, 23, and 17?
2.) What is the difference between accuracy and precision?
Accuracy refers to the closeness that the measurements are to the true value. Precision refers to
the closeness the repeated measurements are in relation to each other.
3.) The temperature of your coffee is 155.6 °F. What is the temperature of your coffee in
degree Celsius?
4.) How tall is your friend in centimeters if his height is 5 feet 11 inches?
5.) What is the temperature in degree Celsius if it is 92 °F outside
6.) What is your friend’s weight in kilograms if he weighs 170 pounds?
7.) General Biology students just took the first quiz. The results are summarized in the
following table.

a.) What is the mean grade for all the students?
b.) What is the median grade for all the female students?
c.) What is the standard deviation for the male and female students respectively?
8.) Abby measured the mass of a penny three times, and got 2.468 g each time. Ziggy also
measured the mass of the same penny, and 2.497 g, 2.399 g, and 2.601 g. Whose
measurements are more precise? Why? If the mass of the penny is known to be 2.500 g
according to the coin specifications provided by the United States Mint, whose
measurements are more accurate? Why?
Abby’s measurements are more precise because all three of her recorded masses are the same,
which means that her numbers were closer in relation to each other. Ziggy’s measurements are
more accurate because the average of her three measurements had a closer relation to the true
value of a penny, which means that her percent error was less than Abby’s.
