Compare and contrast the major characteristics of the six-kingdoms
Smartboard, science journals, power point, modified t-chart,
whiteboard, student laptops, classification simulation worksheet
Tuesday we concluded the 5A1 standard of building and using a
dichotomous key that identifies organisms based on their
characteristics. Today we are moving on to the final standard of the
classification unit which is construct a written explanation comparing
and contrasting the major characteristics of the six kingdoms with
examples (archaea, bacteria, protists, fungi, plants, and animals).
Copy this standard in your science journals. The learning targets we will
be focusing on today and tomorrow are “I can identify the major
characteristics of the six kingdoms and give examples.” and “I can
construct a written explanation comparing and contrasting major
characteristics of the six-kingdoms and give examples of organisms of
each kingdom.
I will say…
The kingdoms are used to categorize every living thing on earth based
on their characteristics. Aristotle was the first person to use a system to
classify organisms based on their traits such as red-bloodedness but in
the 1700s a Swedish botanist named Carl Linnaeus came up with a
better system to classify organisms that didn’t fit into Aristotle’s system.
Linnaeus named the groups ‘kingdoms’ and his system is currently used
today. We are going to watch a quick video on the 6 kingdoms and the
major characteristics of each kingdom. I encourage you all to take
notes as this will help you with the learning targets of comparing and
contrasting the major characteristics of the six-kingdoms.

Watch the video and take notes of the different kingdoms in their
science journals

Instruction
On the whiteboard I have my modified t-chart to compare and
contrast 4 of the 6 kingdoms. Using the notes you took from the video,
help me with the similarities and differences of the kingdoms. If the
characteristic is only for that kingdom, then I’ll place it on the side it
belongs on. If it is a comparison then I’ll write the characteristic in the
box.
As students are saying the characteristics, I am either writing them on
the whiteboard or asking for more clarity.

I am going to give you a Classification Simulation Lab worksheet that
goes along with the simulation that’s on eclass. You and a partner will
complete the table on your own worksheets. If you need help please
don’t hesitate to ask.

Assessment
I will…
Answer the 3 questions in the simulation lab journal on the back of your
worksheet independently and answer the conclusion question on the
front.
