GEOGRAPHY
“Understanding the World
We Live In”
WHAT DOES GEOGRAPHY MEAN?
WHAT IS GEOGRAPHY?
a.k.a: geography is the study of the
Earth and everything on it.
Imagine that you have to tell a friend how to
get from the classroom to the cafeteria.
•
How would you give the directions?
•
Would you give a list of steps to follow?
•
Or would you say that the cafeteria is
next to the office?
Giving directions and describing a location
are examples of geography.
HOW GEOGRAPHY CONNECTS THE
WORLD
GEOGRAPHERS LOOK AT THE WORLD BY
5 THEMES:
1. Movement: “How places and people are connected?”
2. Regions: “What does it have in common?”
3. Human-Environment Interaction: “What is the
relationship between people and their environment?”
4. Location: “Where is it?”
5.
Place:
“What’s it like there?”
REMEMBERING THE 5 THEMES
1.
MOVEMENT
“How places and people are connected?”
MOVEMENT – means change.
Shows how people and goods travel (import and export).
It also explains how people bring new ideas to other
areas of the world.
Answers the question, “How do people, goods, and ideas
get from one place to another”?
• Can you think of ideas that moved from other areas?
• How would your life change if you had to travel by
horse or camel?
