Kings
In Macbeth, King Duncan plays a small
but significant role. Kings (and queens)
exist still in many countries around the
world.

The word comes from the Old Norse
word thegn which translates as ‘loyal
servant to the King’. In Macbeth,
there are 3 Thanes referred to; Thane
of Glamis, Thane of
Cawdor and Thane of Fife.

What is fate? What is destiny? Is there a difference? Are
some people born ‘destined for greatness’? Do you
believe you can influence your destiny or do you think
that everything you do is already pre-­‐determined by
someone else?
Tasks:
1. Spend 15 minutes writing/sketching what your initial thoughts about
destiny. It might be about your beliefs or what you think your destiny
is.
2. Find a partner! Using Act 1, scenes 3, 4, 5,, record what you have
learnt about Macbeth’s fates as predicted by the 3 witches. Make sure
to note down:
a. What the prediction is
b. Macbeth’s reaction in each scene
c. Banquo’s reactions
d. Your initial thoughts on Macbeth
