Changes in Matter Grade 2 SC.2.P.9.1 Division of Academics - Department of Science Changes in Matter Benchmarks • • • • • SC.2.P.9.1 – Investigate that materials can be altered to change some of their properties, but not all materials respond the same way to any one alteration. SC.2.N.1.1 Raise questions about the natural world, investigate them in teams through free exploration and systematic observations, and generate appropriate explanations based on those explorations. SC.2.N.1.2 Compare the observations made by different groups using the same tools. LAFS.2.RI.2.4Determine the meaning of words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 2 topic or subject area LAFS.2.SL.1.1 Participate in collaborative conversations about topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups. Division of Academics - Department of Science All Matter has Properties, but Matter also undergoes Changes Look at a sheet of paper. What are its physical properties? It’s white. It’s flat. It feels smooth. It’s shape is a rectangular prism. It’s made from trees. Think of a way to change it. What are some ways? Folding Bending Tearing Cutting Crumpling Try one way. Reflection: 1. What did you do to change the paper? 2. Describe how your paper is different from the flat piece of paper you started with. 3. Describe how your paper is same as the flat piece of paper you started with. Department of Mathematics and Science Changes in Matter Is it still paper? What was changed? It’s shape or size or maybe its texture. These are physical properties that describe how an object looks or feels. Yes, the paper changed in how it looks, but what it is made out of did not change. It is still paper made from trees. These changes are called physical changes. A physical change is a change in the physical properties of matter. The matter changed in how it looks, but what it is made out of does not change. Division of Academics - Department of Science Things that Change Fundamental Now let’s do the fun-damental Things That Change, Physical Changes to learn more about changes in matter. Explore Physical Changes Follow the directions. Explain on each item is changed physically. Changes in Matter Let’s discuss how the physical changes in the pictures. 1. 2. 3. 4. What did you learn about Physical Change ? In a physical change, the object is changed, but not what the object is made out of. Properties of matter can be used to describe how an object looks or feels. Division of Academics - Department of Science More on Changing Matter What is happened to the ice cubes? • They’re melting. Why? • If you add enough heat energy to ice, it turns into liquid water, then it turns into a gas called water vapor. • If you cool the substance, by taking away heat energy, you can reverse these changes. • You can change a gas into a liquid and a liquid into a solid. What type of change is this? • Changing from one state to another state is an example of a physical change. How does heat affect physical changes? A change in temperature can change materials. Some types of matter change state when enough heat is added to it - melting it. Some change when heat is taken away from it – freezing it. What are some examples of each? Department of Mathematics and Science Let’s Think!! What are some physical changes we could make to these objects? Paper Sponge Clay Fabric Ice cubes Clothes Division of Academics - Department of Science What are some examples of Physical Changes? 1. 4. tearing crushing 5. 2. cutting melting 6. 3. bending freezing Division of Academics - Department of Science Physical Changes Quiz Physical changes can happen when matter is… cut/ torn folded bent crushed crumbled rolled squeezed Changing temperature (hot to cold cold to hot) melting freezing 1. Look at the pictures on the next slide. 2. Number your paper 1. - 8. You will not use two of the choices. 3. Write the type of physical change you think is taking place. Division of Academics - Department of Science Physical Change Quiz Use the paper numbered 1. – 8. Then identify the type of Physical Change for each picture below . 1. 5. 2. 6. 3. 7. Division of Academics - Department of Science 4. 8. Reflection 1. What are some of the ways that you can change materials? Answer: You can change materials with temperature, or by cutting, ripping, smashing, scrunching, crushing, etc. 2. How can temperature change water? Answer: Temperature changes can change the state of matter (cold makes water solid ice; heat turns solid ice into liquid water). Division of Academics - Department of Science What are Chemical Changes? c Chemical Change Chemical changes produce new substances that have different properties than the original substances. What are some examples of chemical changes? • Burning • Rusting • Cooking and baking Things that Change Fundamental Click on Follow the directions to explore chemical changes. Explain how each item is changed chemically. Department of Science Reflection on Chemical Changes
