Black History
Guiding Questions
 How can we honor those who stepped forward when others were thinking backwards?
 How can we change public perceptions?
 What are some ways we can combat racism and discrimination?
Context:
Every year, the African American Academy honors an important figure for their outstanding contribution
to society. You were selected to be part of the committee in charge of finding the best candidates. Your
task is to research on a famous African American and share your information with your teammates.
Finally, a meeting will be held on February where a vote will determine the 2019 Luther Award winner.
Instructions:
CLASS 1: Research at the lab
In teams of three students, find information about Black History. A topic will be given to you by your
teacher.
You must prepare a poster as visual support (11 X 14 sheet). You can include pictures, as well as
important information (dates, words, etc.). You must chose a quote that represents well your topic and
write it on the poster.

What happened? What did this person do exactly?
Effect on the black people at the time
Progress for black people in USA and Canada
Effect on the culture, politics, etc. at the time
CLASS 2: Meeting: Present your findings to the committee (class).
Tell us how your topic is linked to Black History Month, how this person was important and why this
person is still important. In other words, what was the impact of this person’s actions on society back
then?

As your partners present their findings, you are taking notes about the achievements of the nominee.
Make sure you understand well the impact this person or movement had on society back. Ask questions
if you are not sure.
