How can we design structures that can
make your marble reach its finish line?
Design Challenge
With the materials provided build a track
that can lead your marble to the small cup.
Materials

6 Straws
10 Q-Tips
Six Index Cards
12 inches of tape
¼ stick of Modeling clay
Marble (3 trials)
Brainstorm
As you brainstorm designs for your track,
think about other structures and how they
stand up. For example, a tent combines
flexible and rigid materials to make a frame
and covering that can stand on its own.
Brainstorm: Think of ways to
design a structure and draw
your design.
Time: 10 Minutes
Share Out
When designing it is encouraged that you utilize the
ideas of other teams.
Using the ideas of others is not considered
“stealing” we want you to do this!
Draw
labels to show the
changes you will make in your
design, if any.
Iteration
Once you’ve built your track, test
it with your marble. Watch what
happens with the marble and how
to make adjustments with your
track. Iteration making multiple
drafts of your work until it is
successful.
Parameters & Challenge
Time: Design and build your track.
The marble must use gravity to travel.
When time is up we will TEST!
Rubric
I. 1 point for each centimeter of height of the track
II. 5 points for each 90° turn in the track
III. 1 point for each marble that travels the entire length of the
track but does not land or stay in the paper cup at the end of
the track
IV. 5 points for each marble that travels the track and stays in a
container at the end of the track.
We will insert here our criteria as a class;
how we want to grade or test the projects.
