MEANINGFUL (“AUTHENTIC”) ACTIVITIES THAT INTEGRATE LESSON
CONCEPTS WITH LANGUAGE PRACTICE OPPORTUNITIES
According to the SIOP
method, it is important that
students have authentic
practice using their content
skills and their English skills.
These authentic activities should be
incorporated as much as possible in
the mainstream classroom in order to
provide meaning and incentive in
acquiring content knowledge and
English literacy.
NEWCONTENT AND ABSTRACT CONCEPTS
PERSONAL LEARNING JOURNALS
PLAYING A GAME
TEACHING TO ANOTHER STUDENT
DISCUSSION CIRCLES
SOLVING PROBLEMS IN COOPERATIVE GROUPS
PARTNERING STUDENTS FOR PROJECTS
INTEGRATION OF Language skills
The Frame Up
Students work in groups of 4
Topic is written in the center of the frame
Students take turns interviewing others in the group abut their ideas for filling in
one side of the frame
Second student asks the group for ideas on filling in the second side of the frame
and so on
Students can then write about the topic using the frame as a graphic organizer
Biomolecules
Groups of 3, use a maximum of 15 key words related to your
assigned biomolecule and design a graphic organizer to show
what you know about the topic
Include verbs/function words to connect the vocabulary words
Share the graphic organizer with the class
