Prokaryote Eukaryote vocabulary builder
Created by Elizabeth Bryant-Cavazos
The vocabulary activity is using words structure to help identify the prefixes and root of a
science terms prokaryote and eukaryote. I then also try to get the students to make
connections by stressing the u sound in eukaryotes, nucleus, and true. I also use different colors
that the students can color in the words to help emphasize the prefix, root, and the eu in
eukaryote, nucleus, and true.
After learning about the word structures, the students will read a passage about prokaryotes
and eukaryotes. After reading, they will reinforce the new vocabulary words by selecting which
phrases apply to each term.
This activity strengthens the students’ ability to pull apart uncommon scientific terms by
looking at the word structure. It gives them the information about the words before they do
the reading and then a chance to practice using the vocabulary words.
