Elongation of a Steel Bar
Purpose of the experiment: to know the yield
strength, ultimate strength, elongation and reduction
of cross-sectional area, modulus of elasticity (Es) of a
steel bar.
Apparatus used:
_steel bar marked on every 5cm
_tape meter
_elongation machine with all its measurements
Procedure:
_ Measure the length of the steel bar before
elongation
_Put the bar in the elongation machine and start
taking readings from the machine, at first take the
reading of the yield strength (Py) then the ultimate
strength (Pu).
_Then do the suitable calculations to know the
modulus of elasticity
Calculations:
σy=fy=Py/A
σu=fu=Pu/A
strain= ΔL/L

% elongation= ΔL/L x 100
