Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING
Introduction
The 21st century unfolded as the start of the Digital Age – a period of extraordinary
development in innovation and its ensuing data blast. Never before have the tools for information
access and management made such an impact on the way we live, work, shop, and play.
Learning itself is becoming perpetually particular and extending exponentially. Information and
communication technology is transforming how we learn and the nature of how work is
conducted and the meaning of social relationships. Shared decision-making, information sharing,
collaboration, innovation, and speed are essential in today’s enterprises.
Never again would students be able to anticipate white collar class achievement in the
direct of physical work or utilization of routine aptitudes – work that can be proficient by just
machines or effortlessly out-sourced to impart, offer, and utilize data to take care of complex
issues, in having the capacity to adjust and develop because of new requests and evolving
conditions, in having the capacity to summon and grow the intensity of innovation to make new
information.
Traditional education models have often focused on learning identified context for
subject areas such as math, science, language arts and social studies, and then assessing this
content knowledge with quizzes and tests at the end of a chapter or learning module. Wanted
results with 21st-century learning structures incorporate learning customary school subject and

contemporary substance topics in blend with the interdisciplinary 21st-century subjects. The
center subjects and topics that edge 21st-century learning incorporate customary center subjects
while at the same time underlining metro education, worldwide mindfulness, monetary
proficiency, well - being proficiency, and ecological education.
The 21st-century life and profession aptitudes center around the capacity of people to
work adequately with differing groups, to be receptive to shifting thoughts and qualities, set and
meet objectives, oversee extends successfully, being responsible for comes about, show moral
practices, and be mindful to both one’s self and the bigger network. Halim (2013) concluded that
STEM education is the perfect medium for the implementation of 21st-century skills.
Student assessment, whether by standardized test or classroom-based measures, is a
cornerstone of effective teaching and learning. Taken as a whole, good assessments can not only
provide a reliable and valid measure of a student’s learning and understanding but also help
guide both teachers and students on a day-to-day basis.
Students may not master 21st-century skills without the support of teachers and advisers
who are well trained and supported in this type of instruction. Bybee and Starkweather (2006)
argue that teacher and support staff professional development used to focus mainly on how to
use technology and that today, the focus is on instructional strategies and needs. They stated that
technology education professional development needs to focus on how to use technology to
improve student achievement and how to teach a standards-based lesson infused with
technology. 21st-century professional development opportunities prepare educators to integrate
21st-century skills into learning standards and classroom instruction.

Chapter 2
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
INTRODUCTION
In this chapter the research methodology used in the study is described. The geographical area
where the study was conducted, the study design and the population and sample are described.
The instrument used to collect the data, including methods implemented to maintain validity and
reliability of the instrument, are described.
RESEARCH APPROACH AND DESIGN
A quantitative approach was followed. Burns and Grove (2003) characterize quantitative
research as a formal, objective, deliberate procedure to depict and test connections and inspect
circumstances and end results connections among factors. Studies might be utilized for
expressive, logical and exploratory research. An unmistakable overview configuration was
utilized. An overview is utilized to gather unique information for portraying a populace too
substantial to watch specifically (Mouton 2006). A study gets data from an example of
individuals by methods for self-report, that is, the general population react to a progression of
inquiries presented by the agent (Polit and Hungler 2008). In this investigation the data was
gathered through self-controlled surveys circulated by and by to the subjects by the Researchers.
A descriptive design was selected because it provides an accurate portrayal or account of the
characteristics, for example behaviour, opinions, abilities, beliefs, and knowledge of a particular
individual, situation or group. This design was chosen to meet the objectives of the study,
11

namely to assess the 21st Century Learning Skills of Selected Students of Bataan National High
School-Senior High School.
A simple random sample of 60 subjects was selected from the two strands. Mouton (2006)
defines a sample as elements selected with the intention of finding out something about the total
population from which they are taken. A simple random sample consists of subjects included in
the study because they happen to be in the right place at the right time (Polit & Hungler, 2008).
The sample included 30 STEM Students and 30 ABM Students. Available subjects were entered
into the study until a sample size of 60 was reached. Subjects who met the sample criteria were
identified by the researcher at the Bataan National High School-Senior High School. The sample
size of 30 STEM Students and 30 ABM Students were the total of subjects who were willing to
participate in the research and who met the sampling criteria.
INSTRUMENT
A questionnaire was chosen as data collection instrument. A questionnaire is a printed self-report
form designed to elicit information that can be obtained through the written responses of the
subjects. The information obtained through a questionnaire is similar to that obtained by an
interview, but the questions tend to have less depth.
Data was collected with the aid of questionnaires to evaluate the student’s 21st Century Learning
Skills. Questionnaires were decided upon because of the following: · They ensured a high
response rate as the questionnaires were distributed to respondents to complete and were
collected personally by the researcher.

VALIDITY
To achieve content validity, questionnaires included a variety of questions on the knowledge of
students about 21st Century Learning Skills. Questions were based on information gathered
during the literature review to ensure that they were representative of what students and teachers
should know about 21st Century Learning Skills. Content validity was further ensured by
consistency in administering the questionnaires. All questionnaires were distributed to subjects
by the researcher personally. The questions were formulated in simple language for clarity and
ease of understanding. Clear instructions were given to the subjects and the researcher completed
the questionnaires for those subjects who could not read. All the subjects completed the
questionnaires in the presence of the researcher. Rephrasing of some questions was done to
clarify the questions and more appropriate alternative response choices were added to the closedended questions to provide for meaningful data analysis.
No single person who was approached refused to participate. Generalizing the findings to all
members of the population is therefore justified. Seeking subjects who are willing to participate
in a study can be difficult, particularly if the study requires extensive amounts of time or other
types of investment by subjects. If the number of the persons approached to participate in a study
declines, generalizing the findings to all members of a population is not easy to justify. The study
needs to be planned to limit the investment demands on subjects in order to increase
participation.

The number of persons who were approached and refused to participate in the study should be
reported so that threats to external validity can be judged. As the percentage of those who decline
to participate increases, external validity decreases.
DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE
Questionnaires were personally distributed by the researcher to students of Bataan National High
School-Senior High School in the strands of Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics
and of Accountancy Business and Management of School Year: 2018-2019.
STATISTICAL TREATMENT
After the data was collected it was organized and analyzed. For analysis of closed-ended
questions, a Paired Z-Test was used and Percentage and Mean. Data was analyzed by using
descriptive statistics. Frequency tables were drawn and from these the data was presented in pie
diagrams and bar graphs. The open-ended questions were analyzed through quantitative content
analysis by the researcher with the aim of quantifying emerging characteristics and concepts.
Concept analysis is the process of analyzing verbal or written communications in a systematic
way to measure variables quantitatively.
