CURRICULUM
It World Book Day on Wednesday, so this week lots of reading and fun activities linked to storytelling will be
happening. In the Language room we are looking at the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff, we will be reading
and creating stories using puppets and props. We will be attempting to write our very own stories and creating our
own books. We are also developing our ICT skills using the remote controlled insects and cars.
In the Maths room we are looking at the story Goldilocks and the Three Bears and Aliens love underpants. We
will be looking at size, counting and sorting as we read these stories. We will also be listening to a range of story
CD’s.
In the Discovery room we are looking at the story of Little Red Riding Hood. We have created our very own
wood and Grandma’s house and will be retelling the story.
In the Creative room we are creating our very own puppet theatre so we can create our own stories. We are also
learning about The Gingerbread Man story as we are using wooden figures to act this out.
In Forest School we are making our very own stick man based on the story the stick man by Julia Donaldson.
HOME LEARNING ACTIVITY FOLLOWING THE IMPACT SESSION
In Nursery we have be learning about estimating using a variety of objects. Continue developing their skills at
home by using a selection of different sized jars and objects. Ask your child to estimate (or guess) how many
objects will fit in a jar. Check the correct answer by counting the total number in each jar.
LEARNING TOOLS
We will be continuing to introduce the learning tool for the Rights Respecting School Award.
UNICEF RIGHTS RESPECTING SCHOOL AWARD
The children have started to talk about where in Birmingham they live and have started to think about their global
partner. Look out for displays in the Creative and Language room coming soon! Groups will be learning about the
following countries: Blue = United Arab Emirates / Purple = Ireland / Red = Rwanda / Green = Portugal / Yellow =
Bulgaria / Orange – Australia.
GLOBAL LINKS – GREEN AND PURPLE GROUP
This week Green group have been introduced to the idea of making new friends with a school in Spain. So far the
children have learnt some basic Spanish words, such as Hola, Por Favour, Gracias and Adios. The children have
also learnt a song in which they learnt to count to 10 in Spanish. They also watched a clip of children performing a
traditional Spanish dance and were fascinated by all of the moves. They were eager to try to copy the moves.
Mrs Wilson has sent a letter home with information about the words learnt so that the children can practise them
at home.
This week Purple group were excited to welcome Sarah from Ireland who teaches at the school they have made
links with. Sarah spent Friday morning with Purple group sharing information about her class, showing photographs
and answering the children’s questions. The children will be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day on the 17 th March and
Miss Dovey has sent a letter home to parents with all of the information.

REMINDER

Please ensure that you keep us up to date with personal information and that your mobile phone numbers
in the office are correct as we are using a texting service via School Money. This will mean we can send
you reminders and advise about school closures in an emergency.

RIGHTS RESPECTING SCHOOLS AWARD Look out for invitations about special breakfast events which
will now be held after the Easter holidays. You will be able to attend with your child, share breakfast and
learn more about the activities.

Thank you to everyone who has ensured their child is in Nursery by 9.10am so that they are ready to
start Letters and Sounds promptly. Please remember that it is important that your child is settled in
Nursery and that lessons start at 9.15am.

All newsletters can be found on our School website-- www.sellyoak-nur.bham.sch.uk

Please do not open the door to anyone. In the interests of your child’s safety only a member of staff
should open the door. Please go to the office if you think the bell has not been heard.

We are in great need of spare joggers and trousers for our clothes boxes. If you can help or know
someone with older children, please see Miss Close. Please return our spare clothes.

We are constantly teaching the children about manners and the correct way of speaking about things.
We are currently encouraging the children to use the phrase “Please can I go to the toilet” or “I need to
go to the toilet”. We would be grateful if you could support us by encouraging your child to use this
language when talking about the toilet.

Sainsbury’s will be giving out vouchers from 27th January until the 3rd May. Please help us to benefit from
more lovey resources. Look out for customers who refuse the vouchers and ask if we might have them for
Nursery!

MARKETING
We are looking at ways of marketing the Nursery. If you have any experience or ideas Alie would love to hear
them. Could you advertise on a works website/hospital/university/college? Do you have any contacts? Could you
display a poster or do you know of anyone who could? We would like to advertise in Harborne if you can help. One
of our parent Governors has been pushing cards through houses near to her home. This is a great way to reach
local families. Could you find some time to do this? We advertise in some local mags such as Busy
Parents/Birmingham South. There must be more we can do
MATCHFUNDING
Many companies, particularly banks will match fund any money that we raise in School
I have just discovered that Mondelez (Cadburys) have such a scheme called Cashmatch. Does anyone work for
Mondelez? We might be able to link in to this scheme for employees.
