The iGCSE – What you need to know… English Language (Cambridge International Examinations – CIE) PART 1 – EXAMINATION EXTENDED: One exam – 2 hours CORE: One exam - 1 hour 45 minutes Students will answer three questions on two passages of 600–700 words each, linked by a common theme. Students will answer questions based on one passage of approximately 600–700 words This exam is worth 40% of the total marks for English This exam is worth 40% of the total marks for English Language. Language. and PART 2 – COURSEWORK All students will enter a folder of three assignments, each of about 500–800 words. The assignments may be done in any order, and are: • Assignment 1: informative, analytical and/or argumentative. • Assignment 2: imaginative, descriptive and/or narrative. • Assignment 3: a response to a text. The text(s) should contain facts, opinions and arguments. Candidates respond to the text(s) by selecting, analysing and evaluating points from the material. The final mark for the Coursework Folder will be out of 50. The coursework folder is worth 40% of the total marks for English Language. and PART 3 – SPEAKING AND LISTENING The speaking and listening task will be in 2 parts: Part 1 – Individual Task (3–4 minutes) (10 marks): For example, a presentation, a talk, a speech, or a monologue, students will talk for about 3–4 minutes on a single topic or theme which they have selected prior to the test. Part 2 – Teacher led discussion (6-7 minutes) (20 marks) The individual talk becomes a conversation with the teacher/examiner. The speaking and listening is worth 40% of the total marks for English Language. English Literature (AQA) PART 1 – EXAMINATION Paper 1: Unseen Poetry and Prose/Drama – 1 hour 30 minutes Section A: Students will answer on a compulsory unseen poetry text. Section B: The students then answer questions on a text that has been studied in class. The exam is worth 60% of the total marks for English Literature. and PART 2 - COURSEWORK Themed Texts All Candidates will study two or more texts and complete a coursework task on these. Students will be asked to comment on the connections across the texts. The coursework is worth 40% of the total marks for English Literature.
