AP2080 Airbus Reference Language Airbus Approved Abbreviations Handbook (AAAH) 1 Introduction 1.1 Purpose Module 2 The purpose of this module is: • to provide a list of those abbreviations which are approved for general use (Appendix A) by The Company, • to record those abbreviations which are specific to power plant and APU manufacturers (Appendix B) and for which The Company has no control, • to record those abbreviations that are necessary but that cannot, because of severe space limitations on the aircraft or for other exceptional circumstances, comply with the rules governing abbreviations (Appendix C), • to provide rules for the proposal, approval and incorporation of new abbreviations. 1.2 The Company - General Policy The Company accepts that the use of abbreviations will always be necessary. However, such usage must be strictly controlled because the indiscriminate use of abbreviations can lead to the formation of a separate "language" which is not generally understandable. The Company is committed to a policy of Cross Crew Qualification (CCQ) between Aircraft Programs and Projects. Special attention shall be paid to the need to be absolutely consistent in the use of abbreviations and this consistency must apply across all aircraft projects. The use of abbreviations shall be restricted to: • abbreviations to be used only in connection with power plant and APU, • abbreviations to be used only in connection with circuit breaker panels and screen/display messages. AP2080 Airbus Reference Language Airbus Approved Abbreviations Handbook (AAAH) 1.3 Module 2 Definition Abbreviation: A shortened form of a written word or phrase used for brevity in place of the whole word or phrase. It is commonly made by the omission of letters from one or more parts of the whole word or phrase. • Ref: AP2080 Module 1 - Glossary of Approved Airbus Terms and Expressions (GATE) 1.4 Types of Abbreviation Based upon ISO 704 (Principles and methods of Terminology), there are basically three types of abbreviation: • Abbreviation: Created by omitting part(s) of the term e.g.: Cockpit: CKPT. • Initialism: Created by using the first letter of each term element to form a designation. Alternatively, the sound of an element may be used. In some cases they can be pronounced like a word, e.g.: Abbreviated Test Language for Avionics Systems: ATLAS. • Acronym: Formed from other terms by the process of clipping and blending, e.g.: Aviation Electronics: AVIONICS. AP2080 Airbus Reference Language Airbus Approved Abbreviations Handbook (AAAH) 4 Responsibility 4.1 Overall Coordination Module 2 The Airbus Reference Language Network is responsible for the development of AP2080 module 2. 4.2 Technical Responsibility Within the Airbus Design Engineering Departments the abbreviations to be used shall be specified: • by the relevant Design Authority for mechanical subjects, • by the relevant Design Authority for electrical subjects, • by the relevant Design Authority for messages on Display Units. Disputes shall be settled by the Chief Engineers of the Aircraft Program concerned. The relevant Design Authorities are defined in the applicable Work-sharing Document Report 6 and the Basic Approved ATA Breakdown Index (BAABI). 4.3 Approval of Abbreviations Approval of proposals for new abbreviations and the validation of existing abbreviations for new projects shall be given by the Airbus Reference Language Network through the local representative defined page 111 of this Module. 4.4 Use of Abbreviations The compilers of documents relating to the definition of an aircraft e.g.: Sales, Marketing and Engineering Departments within The Company, are responsible for the correct use of abbreviations and compliance with this AP. 4.5 Validation, Data Storage and Production Abbreviations which have been approved by the Airbus Reference Language Network shall be validated and stored in a suitable data processing system. Abbreviations shall only be permitted when space restrictions do not allow the term or expression to be used in full, or when the abbreviation is commonly used for a System or an item of equipment within a system on the aircraft. 5.2 Abbreviation Compilation Process See chart hereafter. AP2080 Airbus Reference Language Airbus Approved Abbreviations Handbook (AAAH) 5.3 Module 2 Approved Abbreviations Abbreviations approved for use, by The Company are listed in the Appendices of this module of the AP. 5.4 Control of Abbreviations It is essential that the unnecessary proliferation of abbreviations shall be prevented. 5.5 Abbreviations Excluded from this Module of the AP The following types of abbreviations are not included in this module of AP2080: • those which are specific to a given discipline, • units of Measurement and Associated Symbols which are given in ABD0046 Units of Measurement, • abbreviations specific to EDP applications, • suppliers abbreviations used in their data and documentation unless approved by the Airbus Reference Language Network, • abbreviations related to development activities which are not yet formalized unless approved by the Airbus Reference Language Network. 5.6 New Abbreviations If a new abbreviation is required this shall be discussed with the local Airbus Reference Language Network Representative (see page 111 of this Module). When an abbreviation is submitted for approval, the Airbus Reference Language Network Representative must: • ensure that the abbreviation is necessary and can be justified, and • consult the source documents listed in Chapter 3 - Reference Documents. If an existing abbreviation is available this shall be submitted to the Airbus Reference Language Network for approval and inclusion in this part of the AP. If no existing suitable abbreviation is available, a new abbreviation may be formed in the following manner: • remove the vowels from the right hand end of the term with the objective of achieving a maximum length of eight letters, • if a length of eight letters cannot be achieved then remove the consonants from the right hand end of the term. AP2080 Airbus Reference Language Airbus Approved Abbreviations Handbook (AAAH) 5.6 Module 2 New Abbreviations, continued The resulting abbreviation shall be submitted to the Airbus Reference Language Network for approval provided that it is: • not more than eight letters in length and ideally not less than six letters in length, • not ambiguous i.e. it shall be clearly related to the original term and NOT be capable of mis-interpretation. 5.7 Abbreviations for Compound Terms Where a term consists of two or more words, each word shall be abbreviated separately in accordance with this module of the AP. Any existing approved abbreviation must be used. Eg: Power = PWR, Supply = SPLY therefore Power Supply abbreviates to PWR SPLY. 5.8 Multiple Meanings for Abbreviations It is permissible for an abbreviation to have more than one meaning. In this case, the use of the abbreviation must be carefully controlled to ensure that the required meaning is clearly understandable from the text or drawing in which it is used. Multiple meanings shall be avoided in the same or similar context. 5.9 Multiple Abbreviations for the Same Term It is not permissible to have more than ONE abbreviation for the same term. The only deviation from this rule is where exceptional limitations do not allow the approved abbreviation to be used. Any deviation shall be approved by the Airbus Reference Language Network. 5.10 Initialisms Wherever possible the use of initials is to be avoided where general terms are concerned. The preferred alternative is to use abbreviations for each word in accordance with this part of the AP. E.g.: for Ground Setting use GND SET and not GS. AP2080 Airbus Reference Language Airbus Approved Abbreviations Handbook (AAAH) 5.11 Module 2 Procedure for Approval of New Abbreviations Approval for use can only be given by the Airbus Reference Language Network. Proposals for approval shall be made via the local Airbus Reference Language Network representative (see page 111 of this Module) who will submit them to the Abbreviation Data Base Administrator. Before submitting any proposal, this person shall check the applicability of the request. The administrator will send out a consolidated proposal list once a month. After acknowledging receipt of the proposals, the Airbus Reference Language members shall review and either accept or reject the proposal. They may also request further information or make constructive comments which will lead to the creation of a satisfactory abbreviation. All members shall respond to proposals within 20 working days. The absence of a response within the specified period will be assumed to signify "no-objection". The originating Airbus Reference Language Network member shall be responsible for progressing and coordinating responses to his proposal to the stage where he can present an agreed proposal for final ratification or the proposal cannot be justified and must be withdrawn. To ease the processing of the request, the layout and content of the request should comply with the example form shown on page 15. 5.12 Listing of Approved Abbreviations and Associated Restrictions Abbreviations approved for use within The Company are listed in this module of the AP. Appendix A: All abbreviations can be used without restriction. The following restrictions apply to Appendix B and Appendix C: Appendix B: Abbreviations listed in this Appendix, which were originated by engine or APU manufacturers, are approved for use in drawings, documentation, etc., directly related to Power Plant and APU. Note: Some abbreviations are specific to one particular manufacturer - as identified in the Remarks column. Appendix C: Abbreviations listed in this Appendix are exceptions to the Airbus Abbreviations Rules. They have been approved for use on Panels (eg: Circuit Breaker panels and Instrument panels) and Display Units in exceptional circumstances (eg: severe space limitations or EDP convention). It will be necessary for the Airbus Reference Language Network members to advise and guide the relevant Design Authorities in the development and approval of new abbreviations if Cross Crew Qualification (CCQ) is to be achieved. 8.2 Modifications The same principles shall apply where developments of existing aircraft are concerned. No indication of their meaning is required. When used in text, abbreviations should always be preceded by the term in full on the first occasion of their use, as specified in ATA Specification i2200. Abbreviations may involve capital and/or small letters (upper/lower case) as defined. Abbreviations used shall comply with AP2080 Module 2 unless covered by the specified exclusions (ref. chapter 5). Abbreviations can be used in the plural by the addition of a lower case "s" as follows: • Lower case text: "the two FCUs…". • Upper case text: "THE TWO FCUs…". If it is not possible to use lower case text then "'S", eg: THE TWO FCU'S, may be used. Abbreviations shall not be used in the possessive case.
