resources improve and protect
the quality of life.

Twelve bingo markers for
each student, such as
pennies or old puzzle
pieces.
Time:
45 minutes
Evaluation:
Assess students’ understanding
of the material presented by
questioning them throughout
the lesson.
Check students’ list of
recyclables placed in
alphabetical order.
Homework:
Ask the students to find out
which day the recycling truck
comes to their neighborhood.
Background for Teachers:
The garbage from your home, apartment or townhome is
collected by garbage trucks and taken to one of five transfer
stations located throughout Palm Beach County. At the
transfer station, garbage is transferred onto large semitrailer trucks. The large trucks can hold 4 truck loads of the
smaller ones. (This procedure allows the smaller trucks
more time on their route, it reduces traffic on the highway
and saves fuel.)
After the garbage is loaded into the larger trucks, it is
driven to the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach
County’s Waste-to-Energy facility in West Palm Beach.
The lightweight garbage is shredded and burned so that it
can be used as a fuel source to generate electricity. The
ashes leftover from the burning process are placed in a
sanitary landfill along with any unburned garbage.
(Sometimes people say that garbage goes into a dump;
however, dumps are no longer used because they were
not environmentally-friendly. State and federal regulations
require landfills to have many environmental protective
systems installed and maintained. In addition, the landfill is
monitored on a regular basis.)
The landfill is filling up rapidly because so many people
throw away a lot of garbage. One way to stop the landfill
from filling up is to recycle as much of the garbage as
possible. Right now in Palm Beach County, the following
items are recyclable at home:
Place in the recycling
bin for containers:
aluminum cans
aluminum foil
aluminum trays
glass bottles & jars
milk cartons
juice cartons
drink boxes
all plastic containers
Place in the recycling
bin for paper:
newspapers
magazines
catalogs
phone books
brown paper bags
corrugated cardboard
Procedure:
1.
Elicit responses from students as to what they threw in the garbage
yesterday or this morning. Focus on items that could have been recycled.
Explain that everyone throws away garbage everyday and altogether in
Palm Beach County we throw away approximately 2,500 tons (5,000,000
lbs.) of garbage in one day. That is enough to fill an entire football field 9
feet high. Consequently, the landfill is filling up quickly.
2. Discuss how garbage is processed in Palm Beach County (refer to the
background section)
3. Discuss the importance of recycling as a method of conserving natural
resources and as a way to save landfill space.
4. Tell the students that we can recycle many things. List the items that are
accepted in Palm Beach County’s recycling program.
5. List the following on the board under the heading “Recycle” and ask the
students to copy them and then arrange in alphabetical order:
magazine
drink box
plastic container
glass jar
brown paper bag
milk carton
aluminum foil
juice carton
newspaper
aluminum can
cardboard box
6.
Review the answers to ensure students correctly placed the items in
alphabetical order.
7.
Explain the directions for “Recycle Bingo”.
Directions: Students must get five in a row; horizontal, vertical, or
diagonal. When a student gets five in a row, he/she must call out the five
items and tell where each item belongs for recycling (the yellow recycling
bin or the blue recycling bin).
8.
Distribute the bingo cards and markers.
9.
Play five rounds of bingo.
Ask the students the following discussion questions:
¾
¾
Why is it important to recycle?
How would you explain the benefits of recycling to someone who thinks recycling is
not important?
Why is it important to protect natural resources?
¾
Explain the homework assignment.

SWA Classroom Presentation Post Lesson Plan
Objectives:
1.) Students will review the
items that are accepted in Palm
Beach County’s recycling
program.
2.) Students will write a letter to
the editor of a newspaper
regarding the environmental
benefits of recycling and the
consequences of using up
limited natural resources.
Sunshine State Standards:

Their Environment
Standard 2: Benchmark 1:
Knows that all living things must

Materials:
A letter to the editor
“I Recycle Right” certificate
Time:
45 minutes
Evaluation:
Assess students’ understanding
of the material presented by
questioning them throughout
the lesson.
Correct and evaluate each
students’ “Letter to the Editor”
assignment.
Homework:
Ask the students to write an
environmentally-friendly
sentence using each letter in
the word “Recycle”. For
example:
R educe what you throw away.
E xercise your right to help the
envivironment.
C hoose to reuse.
Y ou can make a difference.
Background:
Recycling is beneficial for the environment because it
saves natural resources, conserves landfill space, and
conserves energy. For example, aluminum is made from a
non-renewable resource called bauxite ore. It is most
prevalent in Australia. Much pollution is created and much
energy is used when bauxite ore is mined and extracted
from the earth. On the other hand, when aluminum is
recycled, much energy is saved and bauxite ore, a
precious natural resource, is saved.
In Palm Beach County’s recycling program, we can
recycle many items at home, at school, at work, at parks
and even beaches. Our program is among the top in the
country. Through the active participation of residents,
approximately 50% of the waste generated in the county is
recycled. This percentage will continue to increase in the
future because children today recycle out of habit, making
it a part of their daily routine. This means the landfill will
not fill up as quickly. In one year, recycling saved the
equivalent of 2 acres of landfill space 74 feet high from
being filled in Palm Beach County. Recycling matters!
Recycling Facts
1.Every ton of steel recycled saves 2,500 pounds of iron
ore, 1,000 pounds of coal and 40 pounds of limestone.*
2.The energy saved from recycling one aluminum can will
power a television for three hours.**
3. A stack of newspapers 3 ½ feet high will save one
Southern Pine tree.**
4.Each ton of glass that is recycled will save 1,330 pounds
of sand, 433 pounds of soda ash and 433 pounds of
limestone.**

Procedure:
1. Review the importance of recycling.
2. Explain to the students that educating the public about the importance of
recycling and recycling right is the key to increasing the amount of material
recycled.
3. Discuss the mediums of educating the public about the importance of recycling:
T.V., radio, newspaper, newsletter, direct mail, etc.
4. Read a sample of the “Letter to the Editor” from a local newspaper and explain
that it is a way to express an opinion.
5. Ask the students to write a letter to the editor stating their opinion about
recycling. Give students ample time for the activity.
6. Collect the letters. Correct them and return them to the students to be
rewritten. (Then send the corrected letters to a newspaper.)
7. Encourage the students to tell their family and friends about the importance of
recycling.
8. Distribute the “I Recycle Right” certificates.
9. Assign and explain the homework.
