Accreditation & Assurance of Learning Update
Associate Dean, Learning and Teaching to advise the CAG of dates once they are finalised. At this stage, the week of
18-20 April is likely to be when the Review Panel visit The Mock Audit Review will be in November 2012.
The Chair advised that eventually QVS and AOL timeframes would be aligned, though some units may require
separate QVS and AOL reviews. The Faculty are working on a plan to align the QVS and AOL reviews for the future,
taking into consideration all accreditation and other requirements.

Gippsland MSA staff visit Sunway Campus
The Associate Dean, Learning and Teaching, DCD Gippsland, Gippsland School Operations Manager and DCD MSA
had a very productive three day visit to Sunway campus last week. Various issues were discussed and a report is
being compiled for distribution and discussion at the next CAG meeting in November.


All agreed that meeting face-to-face was important to efficiently thrash out issues and make decisions. The
Chair requested Associate Dean, Learning and Teaching consider this when the Faculty budget is being
finalised.
DCD Gippsland advised they have already put things into action since the visit to Sunway.
Issues around summer unit offerings were discussed. Consideration is now being given to also offering winter units in
a three week period in June/July at Sunway. Deputy Course Directors are considering the practicalities of winter unit
offerings including –

Winter semester be in line with break between Semester 1 and 2.
Consider Prato model.
Compress face-to-face learning time.
Consider methods of assessment - doesn’t necessarily have to be an exam.
Innovative ideas to create an attractive package for both students and staff.
Planning early enough so students can plan their study and financial program to include summer/winter unit
offerings at another campus. At present there is not enough lead time for student’s study plans or marketing
the unit offerings.
Needs to be consistent in offering pattern for long term student planning
Offering something unique in winter.
Take into account that BCom/BBus students may be interested in taking these units.
Departments to consider what units would attract students from overseas.
MSA are also considering offering summer/winter units.
ACTION: DCDs to consider and thrash out possible solutions.
ACTION: With a view to gaining more time for marketing of summer units, Manager, Academic Services to liaise with
AGU to inquire whether summer unit proposals can go directly to Faculty Board for approval.
ACTION: Department representatives to consider units that could be offered in summer/winter and would be
attractive to overseas students.

After a slow start, Moodle access and sites for BBusCom units seem to be up and running. Staff have
reported that Moodle is not very user-friendly in a multi-campus environment. DCD appreciates staff for their
patience with this issue. Associate Dean, Learning and Teaching suggested contacting Emily Spencer to
discuss these issues. Training, advanced training and refresher training will be offered before Semester 1
next year. Suggested each campus should have someone fully trained in Moodle and become a Moodle
champion for the campus. MSA in a good position as they don’t have many Chief Examiners and have a few
Moodle champions on campus.
ACTION: Associate Dean, Learning and Teaching to advise the next VLE meeting of issues with Moodle and
multi-campus units.
ACTION: Chair suggested feedback on Moodle go to Manager, Operational Systems.
A successful meeting was held in Malaysia with staff from Gippsland, Malaysia and South Africa. More details
from the Course Director.
Working closely with APC students.
Firm with Monash College students about studying at Gippsland and encouraged to live at Gippsland.
Dr Soma Pillay has taken over as Hons Co-ordinator at Gippsland.

A successful orientation program was carried out on 16 July 2012. There were about 197 students registered
in that intake. An increase but not the 20% increase the campus hoped for.
The first year unit lecturers had a meeting to ensure that students were informed about plagiarism,
independent learning, assignment writing and training in usage of Microsoft Excel. The information was
allocated to specific units to avoid repetition, to ensure that all the relevant information was communicated
and that students had a smooth transition.
The STEP program was carried out on July 19 to familiarise new sessional staff members with policies and
procedures at Monash.
Training for Chief Examiners was carried out on 18 July where they were informed about their duties and
responsibilities. There were concerns that some staff members who were appointed Chief Examiners at short
notice were unable to change this information in the unit guide and were told that it has to follow the
Handbook. This has since been referred to the Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning). Chief examiners
were reminded to complete the multi-campus checklist at the end of the semester. Suggested that all other
campuses offer Moodle training sessions, including going through the Academic Programs Offered at MultiCampus Policy to ensure new and ongoing CEs are up-to-date with the current Policy.
The campus is preparing for an August intake on 27 August 2012. Currently the number of students enrolled
is 17. The number is expected to increase. The campus is considering changing the August intake into a
September intake to attract A Levels and IB students from Malaysia and overseas.
The DCDs from Gippsland, Sunway and South Africa met at the Sunway Campus from 8th to 10th August
with the Course Director and Associate Dean Teaching and Learning to discuss implementation of the
recommendations in the BBusCom Review. The meeting was constructive and the DCDs found the exchange
of ideas very helpful.

Mid-year orientation was small but good – morning of orientation to teams and PBL, and afternoon of
identifying graduate profile and plan to achieve it.
Academic at risk students identified (just over half as many as S2 2011) – requested to complete skill audit
survey and attend an ‘interpreting the skill audit’ workshop, and follow up with skill development workshops
(part of the professional development program – see below).
Just over a third of the at risk students participated (about two-thirds participated in S1).
Transition out of university full day workshop, run by Employment and Career Development. Promoted to third
year students, though open to all. Six students registered, three participated.
Professional development program coordinated with Employment and Career Development, Library and
Learning Skills, and Health and Wellbeing. Promoted to first year students, though open to all. Incentive of
letter of recognition if attending four sessions. Very little participation. Promoted to whole campus, increasing
participation.
Business Student Society off the ground, and they are getting members and running S2 events.
Participated in the BBus review. Positive interactions with the panel and look forward to report in the next few
months.
Successful open day, with similar numbers to last year. Greater awareness of PBL, though a number still

Notice of Planning

Amendments to the Coursework Courses and Units Accreditation Procedure, approved at Academic Board
3/2012, require that a Notice of Planning (NoP) - an online notification form - be submitted via CAPS before
beginning a New Course Proposal, a Major Course Amendment or Course Disestablishment.

The NoP ensures that there is notification to, and the opportunity for consultation between, faculties and other
stakeholders about proposed and amended course offerings prior to proposals coming to the University’s
Education Committee. Using CAPS for this ensures that there is documented evidence of this notification.
The NoP as reviewed by Faculty Deans, Faculty Managers (or nominees), President-led campuses and other
relevant areas.
