Prayer News from France Mission – Issue 132 – Autumn 2014 Inside this Edition Preparing a church-plant in Auray New arrivals in Paris & St-Étienne www.france-mission.org Inaugural services in Argenton & Langeais Living out the gospel in Marseille Paul’s page: La rentrée Reflections by Dr Paul Cooke, FM’s British Director M ost French churches (like most British ones) return to “normal” activities with renewed enthusiasm after the summer break. In French, this return is known as la rentrée – literally (but not at all idiomatically!), a “reentry” – a term that makes me think of a space capsule’s turbulent passage back through the earth’s atmosphere. How has your “re-entry” been this autumn: a comforting return to familiar patterns or a time of turbulent change? For me, the latter experience is closer to the mark: first our eldest child went off to university and then my mum passed away. We’re now in the process of trying to buy a house where we can live together with my dad. It feels like rather a lot of change! But what tremendous reassurance to know that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). This issue of Action Missionnaire contains numerous stories of change: Hannah Prior, Sam Brown, and Sofie Crump who have recently moved to France to serve in churches; Chris & Fiona Lloyd who have moved within France to begin a new work in Brittany; fresh outreach opportunities in Châteauroux; church-plants that have seen their first services in Argenton and Langeais; and a new style of service being developed in Paris-Villiers . But there are also stories of faithful continuance: perseverance in prayer and preaching; the necessarily steady work of relationship-building and discipleship; a firm commitment to leadership development and team-building. Such long-term activities serve to connect us as the body of Christ more securely to our Living Head and to learn to depend on Him for whatever new initiatives the Spirit births. May we all increasingly experience that dependency over the church year ahead. Every blessing www.facebook.com/FMTrust A s we start our second year in our new premises, we can see there’s been a steady increase in the numbers attending Sunday services and the mid-week prayer meeting. So thank you for your prayers and support. @PaulFmTrust and requires people who are called to this sort of ministry. We’re also thinking about ways of being effective witnesses to the shopkeepers and small cafés in the same street as the church. There’s a small kebab snack bar just next door to us and this seems to be a good place for meeting local people. In fact the owner is very glad to see us as he thinks our presence has increased his business! All this shows that the message of the gospel must be lived out in everyday situations, as Jesus Himself showed us by His life. I (Simon) will be coming over to the UK at the end of October and look forward to meeting some of you at the events listed on p. 5. Obviously discipleship is first of all about following Christ but there are also social consequences which cannot be separated from that. We are in an area of high unemployment which has negative consequences on family life, so there are plenty of needs to which we need to try and respond. The theme for the Clockwise from top: weekend was Jonathan, Stephanie, Christian service; Naomi, Zoe, Leah, Rachel one of our aims for this year is to encourage and train our members to take on new responsibilities (leading services, Bible studies, children’s work). We will also hold the first meeting of the renewed church council at the end of October. And our apprentice, Hannah Prior, joined us at the beginning of September. God has provided her with a flat and some English tutoring, and she is settling into life in Le Pré, building relationships with people in and out of the church. ot having spent much time in Le Pré before I arrived at the beginning of September, I’ve really enjoyed exploring the town and getting to know people. Everyone is very friendly and the church weekend away and weekly gospel choir have been great opportunities to get to know people. I’ve also enjoyed studying the book of Revelation as part of a training course called Formapré. On Sunday mornings at church Jony has been working through a series on prayer – very helpful and a great reminder of the privilege that it is to call God our Father and how much we need Him day by day. Please pray for: • wisdom – in training, in decision-making, in delegation; pray for us all to be growing in our love and service of the Lord. 25 October: Holiday Bible Club On the Saturday of half-term we’ll be running a Bible club at the church for children aged 6-12. Ideally we could do with additional helpers for this. May God be preparing children’s hearts to hear the gospel. 4 The joint church weekend away for Le Pré & Romainville 7-13 November: Art Exhibition on “Guilt and forgiveness” We’ve decided to organise another art exhibition with local non-church artists and a poet. Eight artists are planning to contribute work in dialogue with Bible verses on the theme. The exhibition will culminate this year with an evening talk on guilt by psychologist and FM pastor Sylvain Lombet (from Le Blanc Mesnil, to the north-east of Paris). “We’ve had a very encouraging start to term.” The rentrée (i.e. start of the new academic year) has brought many new people to our Gospel choir, one of whom is interested in coming to a service. Jonathan also ran a week-long IT crash-course earlier in October (rather than weekly afternoon sessions). Please pray that: • God would use all these activities to draw people to Himself, that they might receive His forgiveness. You can contact the Vaughans at jony.vaughan@gmail.com FOR YOUR PRAYERS EVERY MONDAY N It’s not always easy, though. Living out of a suitcase is challenging at times; and although good, my French is not yet fluent, making it frustrating when I can’t communicate as I would like. But God is good and I’m learning to depend on Him more and more, and I pray that my time here will be for His glory and bear much fruit. “God is good and I’m learning to depend on Him more and more.” Although it took a while, I’ve recently found a flat to live in – next step though is decorating before I can move in! In the coming weeks, as I need to do less DIY, the plan is to start reading the Bible with some of the ladies in the church, volunteer in a fair trade shop run by the FM church in Paris-Villiers, and start teaching English. But sometimes leaders feel just plain exhausted! Whether they are working with children and young people, heading up a diaconal ministry, serving on church council or responsible for a home group, leaders need support if they are to persevere and flourish. We would like to ask for your prayers for a series of termly Leaders’ Days, held jointly with the France Mission church in Firminy, starting on 18 October. Current and emerging leaders will be working together to help each other put into practice the vision of the church as a community of disciples. Please pray that supportive friendships will also be formed between leaders from the two churches. Please pray too for spiritual renewal in the Saint-Étienne church. A number of people are feeling weary at the moment, overwhelmed by difficult personal or family circumstances. Some are disappointed because friends and colleagues who seemed to be open to Jesus have not followed through when it came to committing to a life of discipleship. Our collective prayer life is weak, we are finding it hard to get people together to pray. Yet we know that God is faithful, that if we ’ve really enjoyed my first few weeks in France. The people are incredibly friendly, the French cuisine is delicious, and it’s fantastic to be part of a church that is desperate to see Jesus made known in this city! “I’m extremely excited about what God is doing here in Saint-Étienne!” Members of the Firminy/Saint-Étienne churches seek Him with all our hearts and obey Him without giving up, He will accomplish His purposes in and through His people here. We are glad to have Sam Brown from Newbridge, South Wales with us for a five-month internship as part of his modern languages degree at the University of “A number of people are feeling weary at the moment.” Birmingham. He is getting stuck in, serving and building relationships both inside and outside the church. Please pray that, to quote Paul’s words to Timothy, Sam would “set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity” (1 Timothy 4:12). We’ve been using Scripture to consider creative ways of sharing Jesus with our friends. Although few in number, the local Christian Union is planning some really exciting events to help engage students with the Christian faith. Helping at a food bank has given me the opportunity to meet people from a variety of backgrounds and has also given me a glimpse of Jesus’ heart for the poor. I’m about to begin an online course looking at the theology behind mission. I’m really looking forward to this but am also slightly nervous at the thought of it all being in French! I’m very much hoping that this course will increase my understanding of God’s mission to reach the lost and encourage me in my personal evangelism. I’m extremely excited about what God is doing here in Saint-Étienne! After this kind of work and doing a study of the town we hope to promote discovery Bible studies and also create events on a regular basis that attract the curious and those wanting to make up their own mind about Jesus. Missionaries Chris & Fiona Lloyd have started building relationships in their new home town Chris & Fiona moved to France in 1994 with three small children after studying at Moorlands Bible College. Their desire was to see new churches started in places where there were none (or very few) and for existing churches to have a vision for multiplication. They spent 13 years in Châteauroux seeing a small group grow and multiply and then moved to Auxerre where they spent 7 years looking after an existing church. For the last few years they’ve felt the need to get back to their original vision of starting churches and, after a number of ups and downs, have settled on the town of Auray in Brittany. There is no evangelical church in Auray and few such churches in the region. However, there are two new France Mission colleagues in Vannes (20km away) and Pontivy (50km away). From a practical point of view, the Lloyds also needed to be near a high school that did the course that their youngest son Joseph (born in France) wanted to do for his baccalaureate. Auray town hall The 15th-century Pont Saint Goustan W e’ve arrived in Brittany! In August we moved into our new flat in the town of Auray, situated on the south coast of Brittany between Lorient and Vannes. Auray itself has about 13,000 inhabitants and the agglomeration has a population of nearly 80,000. But there is no evangelical church. courtesy visits to the mayor, the local Catholic priest, and other churches in the Morbihan (the département, or county, where Auray is located). We have nothing to hide and wish to minimise suspicion by being upfront. This could be important, for example, when it comes to trying to find premises for the new church. We’re also trying to meet as many people as possible in different contexts to whom we can say that we’re here to start a church. We invited our neighbours over for an aperitif for this purpose. We’ve also commissioned a local graphic designer to create a logo for the church-plant. We specifically wanted to choose a local business in order to have the opportunity to explain what we’re doing. We even struck “Starting a new church is rather like decorating your lounge: 80% of the work is spent in preparation!” We’re also interested in helping a couple who live in a nearby town reach out to their friends and neighbours. We think it best not to bring them away from their network of friends to join us in Auray, but rather to help them in their own context. How can you help? By praying in three main ways: Port Saint Goustan (now part of Auray) Rue du Château 8 We believe Jesus wants people to get to know Him. We want to be available to Jesus to enable those people to find Him and to form a local church that will continue to help many find Jesus. Starting a new church is rather like decorating your lounge: 80% of the work is spent in preparation! There are many things to do and to think about. We’ve already started by making FOR YOUR PRAYERS EVERY WEDNESDAY • For God to prepare people for us to meet who want to look for Jesus • For the recruitment of co-workers, either locally in the form of Christians who live in the area and are willing to be part of the project, or those who would be willing to move to the town • For the starting up of a fund to finance the project Auray market You can contact the Lloyds at chris.lloyd@orange.fr FOR YOUR PRAYERS EVERY WEDNESDAY 9 Getting on the map in Châteauroux Up and running in Argenton-sur-Creuse Missionaries Paul & Marjorie Dowling anticipate a time of transition for the church Missionaries Élise & Michaël Duchemann report on developments at “Living Waters” T he big emphasis for the church in Châteauroux this autumn is trying to put ourselves on the map in the town. During the summer, we presented ourselves to the new Mayor of Châteauroux, who received us warmly and was very positive about what we are trying to do. Then on 21-22 September, the church (or rather, its cultural association) had a stand at the Forum des Associations in Châteauroux, a sort of charities fair where all the local voluntary groups can advertise their services. We had an attractive stand, designed by one of The church stand at the Forum des Associations our members, and focussed on three “cultural activities” – the Alpha parents’ course, Oasis (our drop-in morning, now on a Wednesday), and the recently-formed (evangelical) Scout group. It was a very positive experience with lots of church members taking part and gave rise to some interesting discussions and contacts – especially with the other exhibitors. We also sent information to the local newspaper and radio station and distributed leaflets in the streets round the church. Please pray that “The new Mayor of Châteauroux received us warmly and was very positive about what we are trying to do.” 10 A recent church lunch some fruit may come from all this sowing. We pray, in particular, that some parents from outside the church may participate in the Alpha parents’ course. The other main development locally has been the launch of Sunday services at Aux Sources Vives (the “Living Waters” spiritual centre) in Argenton (see opposite). On 14 September the church held an Extraordinary General Meeting to make appointments to fill the gaps left by the departure of the Argenton team. Please pray for Daniel and Philippe, elected as the new members of the Châteauroux leadership team. Personally we thoroughly enjoyed spending time with the family across the summer, including Marjorie’s brother and family over from Australia. Please pray for: • The new leaders in Châteauroux • Fruit from our presence at the Forum des Associations • T he course “Alpha – Parents of children aged 1-10” You can contact the Dowlings at paul.dowling@sfr.fr FOR YOUR PRAYERS EVERY THURSDAY The Châteauroux church prays for the Argenton team S unday 7 September marked a new stage in the development of our Spiritual Centre as we held the first Sunday service in our new prayer room. There were ten of us in total: eight adults and two babies. For one young woman, it was the very first time she’d been to a Sunday service. The refurbishment of the prayer room is very nearly complete. Without those who generously donated their money and/or their time, this “chapel” simply wouldn’t exist – so a huge thank you to them. This building was still part of a working farm less than ten years ago. The floor was simply beaten earth. There were shutters but no door or window. The first phase of the renovation involved demolishing a huge wine vat. This was followed by the introduction of joists, a ceiling, a concrete floor, and insulation. Then a door and window were added, together with radiators and new electrics. Finally, two stone walls were resurfaced, everything was painted, and the carpet and lighting was fitted. Phew! “They’re now in a place where they really want to know the Lord personally.” Over the last year, those of us who were playing prominent roles in the France Mission church in Châteauroux have been making the transition to the Spiritual Centre (effectively a church-plant) in Argenton. That move is now complete and we’re delighted that the Lord has led new people into leadership positions in Châteauroux. This means that Roger Ravaiojaona and I (Élise) in particular have more time and energy to devote to the mission in the south of our département (called L’Indre). I’ve started working with a number of women, some of whom already have a knowledge of the Lord. They’re now in a place where they really want to know Him personally and/or be reconciled to Him. Please ask the Holy Spirit to lead them to know God as He really is and to allow Him to renew their life. Here in the 17th arrondissement (i.e. district) of Paris there are 160,000 inhabitants – so we should be aiming for 16 evangelical churches … and we’re not even half way there. The Paris-Villiers church is contributing to this through our The evening service evening service. In reality, this gathering has become a weekly event! This culte du soir is a church-plant within will remain in its current format every other the Paris-Villiers church because, for week and the intervening weeks will be training evenings. We have to be careful not to overstretch ourselves because our Sunday evening services involve a lot of work to be a time of creative worship. Our inaugural service on 14 September was a joyful occasion, celebrated with Christians from neighbouring France Mission churches in Tours, Chinon, and Loches – 36 people altogether, with numbers dropping to about half that on subsequent Sundays. Our thanks to George and Elsa for the use of their café. There is still much to do on the church building. The front wall, facing onto the road, forms a two-metre-deep lobby in front of the main building. Discussions with Bâtiments de France (similar to English Heritage) continue about the lobby’s future. On the positive side, a very expensive set of windows and door, designed to meet stringent fire regulations, has recently been installed. The young Langeais team is headed by the pastor Raphaël Héritier and his wife, Floriane: carpenter and music teacher respectively. You can find out more about the church at www.evangeliquedelangeais.fr and can contact the pastor at raphheritier@ hotmail.com. Many thanks to all those who have provided financial support for the church: gifts currently stand at around £3,500. Marina Merckle works locally as a physiotherapist and Fanny Diedrichs is studying orthotics and prosthetics in Angers and joins the team at the weekend. Timothée & Tamara Pommier participate in the churchplanting course at Loches, in preparation for starting a new church in Lyon next year. Bea Stoy is working here for a year as an au-pair in order to learn French. And then there’s us: retirees from England and old enough to be grandparents to Manoah (16 months), Raphaël and Floriane’s son, and Alicia (3 years) and Elias (9 months), Timothée and Tamara’s children. The team: the Héritier family top left; Marina top right; Fanny in sunglasses; the Pommier family centre-right; and a mysterious masked helper! During the week, the team continue to meet for study and prayer at 7am and thanksgiving for the day at 6pm. We pray for the inhabitants of Langeais, for those people we meet during the day, and for activities in local evangelical churches. Please pray for us and the work here in Langeais. FOR YOUR PRAYERS EVERY FRIDAY 13 Other news from Paul Cooke Serving God in Brittany FM supporter Sofie Crump shares about how the Lord has been using her and her friend Milla Milla & Sofie in South Korea M illa and I met at a Word of Life (Parole de Vie) camp (www.pdvfrance.org) for young adults just over a year ago. We hit it off as friends and the Lord opened up various opportunities for us to serve Him together throughout summer 2014 in England and South Korea. During the Beautiful Feet trip we spent 6 weeks walking from Exeter to Liverpool (800 miles) sharing the gospel, and in Taibeck, South Korea, we had the opportunity to run a 10-day evangelistic English camp for children and teenagers. The Lord has called us both to spend the next 10 months (at least) in France where we’re now living in a small town called Bruz, just outside Rennes. Milla (who’s French) is studying Spanish with English & Sociology at the University of Rennes. I’m teaching English to children, teens, and adults in a private language centre in Bruz. We spend our weekends in Dinan as we are involved in the France Mission church there. Milla is a member of the Conseil (leadership team) and heads up the pre-adolescent group as well as the “Evangelism on the streets” team. I’m finding my feet, gradually getting to know members of the church and praying about which area(s) the Lord would have me serve in. Thank you so much for your prayers. God bless you richly. 14 Prayer requests Free DVD Vocation: Implanteur d’église (“Vocation: Church-Planter”) is an excellent DVD produced by the National Council of French Evangelicals.
