advertisement
FAQs (11 July 2012)
1) Fencing Mission for Primary and Secondary:
Both are required to collect the rings and deliver back to base to get additional points.
Is it possible to sweep the rings onto our robot or is it a must to create a "sword" and "fence" the
rings?
For primary mission, you have the choice to collect the rings in any manner/ way. For Secondary
mission, please refer to page 27 of the Challenge Announcement Booklet for the definition of
‘picking’ and ‘possession’.
2) Each team will have 5 tokens, worth 12 points each. Does that mean that if the robot remain in
the base throughout the 2 minutes and did not knock down any officials, the total points for the
team will be 60 X 1.2 = 72 points?
Yes.
3) The LEGO props file are saved under lxf format. I could not open the file in my laptop. Is it possible
to upload the file in another format?
The teams will need to download the ‘LEGO Digital Design’ (LDD) software in order to open the lxf
file. The LDD software will generate the building guide for the props. You can download the FREE
LDD software at http://ldd.lego.com/
4) What is the different between the Microsoft word document (B.O.M) and the lxf file?
The lxf file shows you how to build the props. Whereas the word document (B.O.M) indicates the
EXACT LEGO parts use to construct the props (article number, description, colour, of the LEGO parts.
5) What will be used to stick the mission props to the playing field?
The velcro that we use are 3M’s DualLock. For their own usage, participants can use the 3M foam
double sided tape.
6) In Weightlifting why is "The weights will be handed to the team, to be placed on the stand, before
the start of the run." (Page 13)? Why is the referee not doing it for the team?
We want your team to place it themselves so that it is according to their programming strategy.
7) Will we be providing vendor contact for printing the stickers for the playfield? If not, do you have
a high res 1-1 image/pdf of the stickers layout?
No. We do not have high resolution 1-1 image of the sticker layout.
1
8) Where do we purchase the other props for the playing field?

FAQs (added on 20 July 2012)
1) Can you allow 3 members to be in the quarantine area, 2 members to go for the mission run then
1 member can take care of the equipment at the work station? If not who will be responsible for any
lose of equipment.
Only 2 members from each team are allowed in the quarantine area. Team members in the
quarantine area are reminded to take care of their belongings and valuables. They should bring their
valuables with them at all times (to the toilets, attempting the missions, etc) and they should also
keep their work station neat and tidy and not leave anything lying around. Teams can also bring
their cable lock to secure their laptop to the work station.
Although there will be NJRC staffs at the quarantine areas to deter mischief, teams are reminded to
be responsible of their own belongings. As the quarantine area is a restricted area, teams will also
be reminded to take/keep their belonging and valuables before the quarantine period ends.
2) How many trial playing fields will be provided and how many primary teams are expected per day.
Usually is so crowded that the team have no time to trial at all.
There will be 2 trial playing fields for primary category, located at the science centre for school
booking. We can accept up to a maximum of 2 schools per day and the booking slot are available on
first-come-first serve basis. If the preferred booking slot is not available, we would suggest for an
alternative time slot for the school booking.
3) Can you provide the printed playing field so that students can prepare in school. Or at least
provide a printable image so that we can get it printed.
Please refer to page 9 in the challenge announcement manual for the dimension and drawing of the
playing field. You may also download the high resolution playing field drawings at www.njrc.com.sg
4) It doesn't make sense that we can buy the props and have no means to get the playing field.
We would recommend teams to build the props and try interacting with the props (e.g. removing
the weights, picking the rings, etc). For the playing field, we would recommend teams to ‘recreate’
the field on a flat surface with some basic art material and black sticker by following the dimensions
given in the challenge manual.
Alternatively, we do have the trial playing fields located at the science centre for school booking as
well. You may also refer to question 11 for playing field building support.
5) When the robot is returning back to base, does the entire robot need to be completely be inside
the green base for the team to touch the robot for the next mission?
Yes, the robot has to be completely in the BASE before the team can touch the robot. Please refer to
point 2.11 on page 10 of the challenge booklet.
6) May I know what is the exact definition of shoot? Will dropping of "basketball" into the basket
without touching the basket be awarded points? Is there any height limit?
3
Yes, the team will be awarded points of dropping the ball into the basket without touching the
basket. If the basket is touched at least once, the total points of the basketball sport will be halved
(multiplied by 0.5).
Points will be awarded at the end of the run based on the balls in the basket at that time for points
to be awarded.
There is no height limit for the robot.
7) Can we use more than 1 motor for Mission 1 Secondary level and/or detach one motor at the
base?
Yes, you may use more than 1 motor for the runs provided the motors are from the LEGO®
MINDSTORMS NXT® (9797). You can detach the motor at the base provided the entire robot is
within the base area (Please refer to point 2.11 on page 10 of the challenge booklet). However,
please do note that time runs on while you are doing the adjustments to your robots.
8) Can we use a gear to turn the gear on the sailing prop instead of turning the axle?
You are free to use other methods to ‘turn’ the sail, for example; using a gear to turn the gear on the
sailing prop to score. However, do note that if any on the playing field is damaged or dislodged (e.g.
rubber band on the sailing prop is remove) from its original location (whether deliberately or not)
the run will be stopped.
9) For the basketball sport, do we have to shoot the ping pong balls behind any line? Or can we just
lift the ball up and release it directly on top of the hoop?
No, the robots do not have to shoot the ping pong balls behind any line. You can lift the ball up and
release it.
10) How many motors are we allowed to use for primary school mission?
There are no limits to the number of motors allowed provided the motors are from the LEGO®
MINDSTORMS NXT® (9797). Please refer to the challenge announcement booklet page 42 for the
robot regulations.
11) Can we have the contact of any contractors that can fabricate the playing field?

12) For Tertiary Category and for the part on swimming/diving, is the robot allowed to reach out to
the sides for support? (i.e. cling on to the wall or something like that)
No, the robot is not allowed to reach out to the sides for support. Furthermore, we will also be
adding acrylic pieces (100mm in height), attached to the sides, around the swimming pool area. This
change will be reflected in the trial playing field at the Centre.
4
13) For Tertiary Category and for the part on swimming/diving, is the robot required to fully
submerge in the “water” for 90 points to be awarded?
No, the robot need not be fully submerged when attempting the diving / swimming. Executing a
clean dive and swimming with no ‘water’ splashing onto the pink zone, is worth 50 points.
Ending the run with the entire robot* in the red zone is worth additional 90 points. The robot is not
allowed to end at the red zone without diving or swimming.
14) For Tertiary Category and for the part on fencing, we understand that “Sweeping the target into
the robot is not allowed” as mentioned in the challenge announcement. If our robot has an axle
which pokes into the ring, lifts it off the stand and then places the ring on my robot, is it considered
“sweeping”? (When the rings are on the robot, they fit the definition of “possession” as stated in the
challenge announcement)
If the robot has an axle which pokes into the ring, lifts it off the stand and then places the ring on the
robot, it is considered as ‘picking’.
15) For Tertiary Category and for the part on horizontal bars, there is a 100mm by 345mm black
zone on the floor of the playing field. We understand that this area cannot be touched by the robot
when the robot is attempting the horizontal bars in order for points to be awarded. However, if our
robot touches the black zone while we are not attempting/when we have completed the horizontal
bars and just passing by, will points be not awarded/deducted for the horizontal bars?
The robot may touch the black box if it is not attempting the Horizontal bar.
16) There is no height limit for the tertiary category mission. Are we right to say that?
Yes, there is no height limit for the robot. Please refer to the challenge announcement manual, page
42.
17) I understand that our team of 5 will be split into 2 groups; 2 for technical side (robot) and 3 for
marketing side on the preliminary challenge. Will the team be split again IF we get into the finals for
robot performance?
During the Finals (on 8 Sep), we will allow all 5 members of the team to enter the quarantine area.
However, due to space constraints, we will only provide 1 work station per team (which can sit 2
people) and only 2 members of each team can enter the playing fields.
Also, please do note that we allow the team to change the 2 members that are going into the
quarantine area from the morning portion (mission 1) and afternoon session (mission 2).
18) For the Championship award and the part on 30% presentation, it is referring to the presentation
that we will do on the presentation preliminary week. Are we right to say that? Or do we need to
enter presentation finals in order to be considered for championship award?
No, you do not need to enter the presentation finals in order to be considered for the Championship
award. The championship award will be calculated based on the presentation scoring during the
preliminary week.
5
For more info on the championship award, please refer to the challenge announcement booklet,
page 45.
19) Regarding the Best Programming Award, IF selected into the presentation finals, are we required
to run our robot during the presentation finals?
Yes, the team will be required to run the robot if they are selected for the Best Programming award
in the presentation finals.
20) For the sprint side event, will there be calibration time for light sensors, similar to the calibration
time in the challenge preliminary?
There will be a short grace time for calibration after the team register on the event day.

FAQs (added on 26 July 2012)
1) You mention in your last FAQs that you will be adding a ‘acrylic barrier’ around the ‘swimming
pool’ area in the tertiary field. How does it look like? What is the height?
The barrier height is 100mm. Please refer to the following picture for the new additions (you can
also look at the trial playing field in Science Centre for reference).
100mm
2) I would like to ask if Mind Sports is an event in Olympics? If so, can we include it as part of our
research?
Mind Sport is not an Olympic event. Having said that, the research topic for this year will be
to describe the development of sport science and technology, its current state and future
development trend. We want you to think how robotics can be use in the sport science and
technology field as well as sport and wellness management.
As such, if you can link Mind Sports to the research topic that you are discussing, you can
include that in your research and presentation.

We will be coming up with a video explanation for this. Please keep a look out on our website for the
video post over the next week.
10) Will it considered as a score if the ping pong ball bounces into the basketball hoop?
Yes. Points will be awarded at the end of the run based on the balls in the basket at that time (i.e.
points will be base on the number of balls that REMAIN in the basket at the end of the run).
11) For the secondary category, fencing, we are suppose to bring the rings back to the starting point
to get an extra 10 points right? Can we program our robot such that it 'possess' all the rings and
bring it back to the starting point at once? meaning can our robots hold more than 1 ring at a time?
Yes, the robot can hold more than 1 ring at a time when bringing the rings back to the BASE area.
For Side Event
12) Is it possible to use colour sensor instead of light sensor as our school has only colour sensor.

FAQs (added on 3 August 2012)
1) Could you specify the way that the quarantine will work and what specifications of the booths?
On the challenge day morning, all teams are to report and register at the Annexe Foyer (at about
8pm). They will then be assigned a booth at the quarantine area and a booth at the marketing booth
area.
2 team members can then proceed to the quarantine area while the rest of the members can
proceed to the marketing booth area to setup. At around 8.45am, quarantine will begin. All visitors,
except for 2 members per team, will be asked to leave the quarantine area.
Team will then take turns to take on the challenge (Run1 & 2). Once all the teams have completed
both runs, quarantine will end and the participants will be allow to leave the quarantine area. After
lunch, we will begin another round of quarantine in the afternoon for mission 2.
Please refer to the challenge announcement booklet page 55 for the sequence of activities on the
challenge day.
The work station at the quarantine area is 1.5m x 0.5m, 1 table, 2 chairs and 1 power socket (for
each team).
2) Is it allowed for us to shoot the orange ballsfrom our base into the basket ball prop, one at a
time?
Yes, but it must be loaded one ball at a time.
3) I would like to know if students may bring smart screen for presentation and booth games for the
NJRC competition.
Yes, you may. However, please note that the marketing booth that you are assigned is 2m (L) x 1m

2) For the wrestling sport in the tertiary playfield, can we adjust the block to the edge of the colour
box (still within the colour) before we start the mission?
No. The block (‘opponent’) will be place right in the centre of yellow box (T1b) at the start of the run.
3) With regards to point 2.20 of the Challenge Announcement booklet: Will there be any penalty if
the robot leaves an item on the field, apart from it being confiscated till the end of the match?
No penalty.
4) With respect to the tertiary horizontal bar mission, under the points:
c) The entire robot must be lifted off the ground before going over the black area
d) The robot can be lowered after the entire robot has passed over the black area
Can to robot start lifting itself onto the bars from a position where part of the robot is above the
black area? Similarly, can the robot lower itself after having crossed the black bar onto a position
where part of the robot is above the black area when it makes contact with the ground? An image
illustrating "above the black area" is attached for your reference.
17
Yes. As long as the robot is not physically touching the black area. However, please note that while
crossing the black area, your robot must use the bars to assist your robot over the area.
5) With regards to point 2.15 and the definition of being in base, would it be considered that the
robot is in base/can be touch the robot in this circumstance (see attached diagram).
What is shown in the above diagram is not considered as ‘entire robot’ within the base. ‘Entire
robot’ includes its attachments, extensions, etc.
18
6) I would like to clarify if RCX parts can be used for NJRC. Following is the part I am referring to:
If you are using the NXT set, you are not allowed to use RCX components. Vice versa.
7) Are we allowed to use parts of different colour but still in the 9797 set?
Yes.
8) Can we grab the boxing bar from the back (from the bell side) instead of pushing it down on the
front?
Yes.
9) For the boxing (secondary) after pushing the bell to the black mark, can we do others sports first
before going back to the boxing and knocking the bar down to ring the bell?
Yes.
10) "The team may touch the robot to modify the robot’s attachments, make adjustments or
load/remove scoring elements once the entire robot* is within the BASE."
Does it means that for all 3 divisions, the robot can actually bring the scoring elements to the base,
then, the students can manoeuvre the scoring elements and place it onto the robot before going
back to complete the game?
i.e.
Primary
Hockey
1. collect all black pucks
2. bring back to base and load them manually on the scoring mechanism 3. continue with the hockey
game to score the black pucks
Yes. This is allowed in the Primary school division.
Secondary
Basketball
1. collect all white ping pong balls
2. bring back to base, and load them manually into the scoring mechanism 3. continue with the
basketball game to score all white ping pong balls
Yes. This is allowed in the Secondary school division.
19
Tertiary
Wrestling
1. collect wooden block
2. bring back to base and flip the block manually and place it on the robot 3. continue with the
wrestling game and place the flipped block on the blue box
No. This is NOT allowed in the Tertiary school division.
11) Could I manually flip my weight lifting in base (for Secondary School)?
Yes.
12) For the upper basketball hoop, there is limited capacity, meaning it will overflow at around 6
ping pong balls, causing difficulty if we want to score the maximum amount of points. Can we
remove ping pong balls from the upper hoop after it is certain that the ball has landed steadily into
the hoop?
No. Points will only be awarded at the end of the run (based on the numbers of balls in the
upper/lower hoop).
13) Let's say we have certain modules aka attachments which we switch on the robots to do
different tasks.
i. Can we have 1 motor on every module? Then when we change modules, just "plug out" the
module and the motor wire from the NXT.
Yes
ii. Can we place the modules that we are not using outside of the playfield (like on the floor), then
when we want to use the module, then we take it up and put it on the robot?
Yes. However, we would advise you to bring a box and to keep all your components and parts in it.
We will not be responsible if there is any damage to your components if it was accidentally stepped
on.
The above questions are somewhat related to my robot strategy so please try to refrain from posting
it on the FAQ document.
No. We will publish all questions from participants on the FAQs.
14) 1st question: under pointer 2.11 on page 10, can the block used for "wrestling" be considered a
scoring element and thus be brought back to base, flipped manually and then deposited?
No. Please refer to question 10 as well.
2nd question: are we allowed to align with the stands if we are not intending to collect the rings
during "fencing", perhaps on our way to other scoring elements?
20
Yes. However, please do take note that you are not to damage or dislodge any of the props along the
way. Please refer to points 2.17 and 2.18 in the Challenge Booklet.
3rd question: will we still be given points for the horizontal bar if our robot momentarily touches the
field or the black area while crossing the bars? (tapping action caused by slight swinging motion but
not supporting the robot in anyway)
No. Your robot cannot touch the black area at all while crossing.
15) What's the exact position of the official?
For Primary School, please refer to the Challenge Booklet page 9 & 18.
For Secondary School, please refer to the Challenge Booklet page 20 & 29.
16) If the mechanism of the boxing is activated, but there is no sound produced from the call bell, do
we get the full points for the boxing?
Yes. As long as the scoring indicator is off its original position at the end of the run.
17) Can we align our robot to the table tennis ball dispenser when it is attempting the Cycling?
Yes. However, please do take note that you are not to damage or dislodge any of the props along the
way. Please refer to points 2.17 and 2.18 in the Challenge Booklet.
18) Scenario: My robot has just fully cleared the red line (first part of terrain, cycling) and the 2minute time is up.
Question: Do I still get the 25 points for this first terrain?
Yes, the team will still be able to get the 25 points for clearing the first terrain completely.
19) To what extend is considered "touching" the officials?
As long as the Officials’ position is out of the box (even partially).
20) We understand that robots are not to move the officials from their original location. However if
we directly or indirectly touched the official, ie by causing a scoring element to move an official,
would it lead to a forfeit?
There will be no forfeit. However, you will receive a penalty for dislodging the Officials.

FAQs (added on 23 August 2012)
1) In General Rules, Game Play and Scoring (For tertiary), it says
2.11. The team may touch the robot to modify the robot’s attachments, make adjustments or
load/remove scoring elements once the entire robot* is within the BASE.
What does "modify" exactly mean? Can we add/remove/replace the attachments (such as a claw) of
the robots when it is in the BASE? (After finishing one task, the robot come back and we want to
change the attachments for another task.)
Can we let the robot to run another program when it is in the BASE?
Yes, you can add/remove/replace the attachments of the robot when the entire robot is in the BASE
area. You can let the robot run another program when it is in the BASE, but time for the mission run
on.
2) It is said that the entire robot must be a maximum of 250mm long by 250mm wide or smaller.
Does the "entire robot" includes cables? (Since the length of cables are fixed, it is almost inevitable
that the excess part of the cables sticks out).
Yes, the “entire robot” must be a maximum of 250mm long by 250mm wide, includes the cables.
Kindly do proper robot housekeeping by tying the cables using LEGO rubber band.
3) (For Tertiary) May I ask what is your definition of "center", as the dimension of "centre" is critical,
we would like to know the exact dimension of the specific center of yellow box.
Also, is there any template to guide that the wooden block so that it will be placed at this center
position before the mission to ensure fairness and accuracy for all the teams?
Yes, we will have a template to ensure that the wrestling wooden block is in the centre of the yellow
box.
4) May I ask if we can have different robots for different games? Which mean we just change the
controller to a different robot when they return to the BASE.
No, you can only have 1 robot per run. You are not allowed to change to another controller when
they return to BASE.

5) I would like to ask that after crossing the horizontal bars and I decided to call for a restart, do I still
get to keep the points for crossing the horizontal bars?
Points will be awarded for tasks that have been completed prior to the call for a restart. For
example: if a robot has successfully lifted off (without touching the black area), but have not cleared
the black bar in the middle, your team will be awarded 30 points for lifting off. If your team decides
to call for a restart at this point, the 30 points will remain.
6) I would like to ask if we could bring iPod or even iPads into the competition area.
You are not allowed to have any iPod, iPads or any communications devices in the quarantine area.

FAQs (added on 29 August 2012)
1) How is the top 40 being selected (for the Grand Finals)? Is it top 20 from day 1 and top 20 from
day 2?
The top 40 finalists will be selected based on the top 20 teams from each day of the challenge
preliminary round.
2) How far is the grey axle to the end of the black axle? Is the grey axle in the middle? What is the
axle length for the black axle? (Sailing)
Please check the LEGO digital design file (uploaded on the NJRC website) for the length of the black
axle.
3) With reference to the latest FAQ question 4 updated on 23 Aug 2012, we intend to use only 1
controller to attach to various robots for the different games. Which means, we have one design for
horizontal bar, and once mission completed, we will pluck out the controller and mount it onto the
robot for fencing etc. We are not intending to change to another controller.
As long as only 1 controller is used, you may have as many attachments as needed. But all parts
must remain within the robot requirement.
4) For bringing a fencing ring back to base (secondary school), is 10 points awarded for each ring (ie
max 50 points if all rings are brought back) or is it 10 points regardless of the number of rings
brought back?
10 points will be awarded for EACH fencing ring that is brought back to base.
When will the points for picking up the rings be awarded - is it the moment they are lifted off the
stand or at the end of the run?
The points will be awarded once the ring(s) has been lifted off.
5) Can i know the dimensions of the sumo bot competition playing field (i.e.radius, area, the distance
between each starting point, the distance from middle line to starting point, he distance from
starting point to circumference of circle, etc) I don't think it is posted in the challenge manual.
Aside from the weight limit for 1.2kg, is there any size limit for the robot?
There is no size limit for the robot as long as the parts are within one NXT set. If your robot is found
to have extra parts, your team may be disqualified.
The dimension of the playing field is as such:

6) Would like to find out whether there is a size, weight and parts limit for sprint and sumo robots.
