small-town, California-based business Reptivizion - where broken and
defunct television sets are repurposed into incredible reptile habitats!
Micaela, along with her father Vaughan, originally got the idea for these unique
Repti ‘Reality Shows’ back in 2012 when Micaela wanted two Bearded
Dragons for Christmas. Having no place to house the new pets, and an old
rear-projection television set that had just kicked the bucket, the solution
became clear!
Since then, the Kastors have built and sold several of their custom Reptivizion
sets using a variety of found or donated televisions. Their own collection has
also grown extensively with a great collection of snakes, and over 10 of their
own custom sets; every ‘channel’ an amazing reptile!

Zoo Med Labs President, Gary Bagnall recently acquired a little piece of Reptile History! This sign was
originally used at the California Alligator Farm in Buena Park, CA; one of the original, “must-see” reptile
zoos in the United States. The sign now has a permanent home here at Zoo Med Labs.
Here’s what Gary had to say about finding the sign:
“The California Alligator Farm really started as the Los Angeles Alligator Farm in 1903 and then moved to
Buena Park, I think, in the 1950s.
In the 1960s I would visit my grandparents in Huntington Park and my grandma Mae would drive me
to see the alligator farm and then take me to Knott’s Berry Farm which was located directly across the
street. My grandma told me that Knott’s used to be just a “berry stand” in the ‘50s before they made the
Frontier Village, plus the one train that went around the park in the ‘60s.
I fondly remember the Alligator Farm with their Alligator Show and many reptile exhibits, including a live
Tuatara (Hatteria punctata).
One memory is of the main trainer standing on a small island covered with alligators and all he had was
a stick for protection! I remember it being very cold that morning and I thought it would have been a very
different show if it was the hot afternoon and the ‘gators’ had a chance to heat up!

In the ‘50s, the farm had a slide that the alligators slid down, plus kids could ride on the back of a large
alligator with a special harness (I have postcards of this!). In the 1960’s the slide was gone and the alligator rides were deemed too dangerous and seen as harmful to the animals (The ‘50s were a different
time).
Sometime in 2000, the lease expired on the California Alligator Farm and they decided to close the farm
and subsequently shipped all the live alligators to a man in Florida who had a large personal alligator
farm. When the farm closed, a metal scrapper was called out to haul away all the scrap metal and he
saw the original sign in a shed and asked to have it. This sign sat in his garage for over 10 years until
knowledge of it was passed over to me! And the rest is history.
So this is how I got the original California Alligator Farm sign, and every time I look at it I have fond
memories of my grandma Mae taking me to this wonderful place which is now just a memory! On an
interesting side note: Knott’s Berry Farm picked their location across from the Alligator Farm because it
was such a big attraction. Now Knott’s is the mega amusement park and huge attraction! How history
changes things.”

Zoo Med’s ReptiShelter 3-in-1 Cave is a unique, naturalistic
hide cave that also functions as a shedding and egg-laying
chamber. Many reptiles and amphibians suffer from a lack
of humidity in captivity, which can lead to shedding and
respiratory disorders. The ReptiShelter 3-in-1 Cave corrects
this problem by creating a humid “microclimate” within the
terrarium, similar to what they would find in burrows, or
under rocks and logs in nature. By adding the appropriate
substrate to the 3-in-1 Cave tray, you can provide the ideal
environment for shedding and egg-laying. Providing a proper
nesting site can help prevent against egg-binding, a dangerous

Reptile health is dependent on an interconnected cycle of a varied diet, proper heat regimes and supplementation of calcium and
vitamins. Most reptiles require exposure to UVB to produce vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 is essential for the uptake of calcium from
their diet. The sun provides UVB in nature, however, in your home you will need to provide UVB with specialty lighting designed
for reptiles. There are many lamps available for reptiles in your local pet store. Some lamps produce UVB, some produce UVA,
and others produce heat. Some lamps even produce UVB, UVA and Heat. Not all lamps are created equal, so go with the company you can trust: ZOO MED!

Balanced calcium and multi-vitamin supplementation for all reptiles and
amphibians. Offer REPTI CALCIUM® and REPTIVITE™ in alternate feedings as
directed. Proper nutrition for reptiles and amphibians is dependent on many
variables. Exposure to UVB helps animals produce Vitamin D3 in their skin,
while some animals obtain vitamin D3 from their diet. Either way, vitamin D3 is
responsible for utilizing calcium within the diet. UVB, Vitamin D3, heat, calcium
and diet work together and are dependent on each other for balanced nutrition.
There is no prescribed rule for which animals need additional D3, but a little
research can help guide keepers in the right direction. For more information on
UVB, Vitamin D3 and calcium, please visit www.zoomed.com.
General Recommendations:
Recommended Use: With D3
• Diurnal species housed indoors (Bearded Dragons,
Chameleons, turtles and tortoises).
• Can be offered occasionally to nocturnal animals.

• Animals housed outdoors with direct exposure to sunlight for 10 hrs/day or
more (i.e. Chameleons and tortoises housed outdoors).
• Reptiles that eat whole vertebrate prey (eg. mice).
Zoo Med’s REPTI CALCIUM® With or Without Vitamin D3 is a phosphorus-free calcium supplement for reptiles and amphibians. We use
only Precipitated Calcium Carbonate which is white in color and is
essentially lead free. Impurities in other sources of calcium carbonate
(e.g. Oyster Shell Calcium) cause the supplement to appear gray. With
REPTI CALCIUM®, you can take comfort in knowing that your reptiles
are getting a highly bioavailable source of calcium carbonate that is
free of harmful impurities.
