MOTIVATION LETTER

Alessandro Graizzaro

I am leading a laboratory dedicated to fuel cells and hydrogen technologies since 2006. My working experience, as lead engineer, is strongly related to R&D project management and coordination both at

National and European level.

From the technical point of view, I have gained a solid knowledge in the field of hydrogen and fuel cells as well as in other transversal engineering fields as electric engineering and system integration through a direct experience in the projects in which I was involved as chief engineer and project manager.

I follow with great interest several aspects of technology innovation in order to integrate new solutions where possible. I have very good persuasive attitudes and a good charisma in the creation of new working teams.

In my experience (see Annex), especially in demonstrative projects, I have developed a good knowledge of the real constraints of the industrial partners, and I strongly believe this was a very good formative experience.

My main skills are indeed:

1.

Design of experiments and test bench design

2.

Project and working team Management

3.

Development of methods and patterns of use of new technologies

4.

Legal aspects and authorization

5.

Strong computer skills

The skills I have gained in systems engineering span from experimental architecture definition to the final design of the systems and analysis of experimental data. In particular, I have dealt with different types of tests:

• Test of fuel cells (PEM, DMFC, SOFC and MCFC)

• Test of cogeneration systems for residential applications

• Test of biological reactors

• Test of compressors for air and gases (hydrogen, methane)

• Test of separation systems (filters, coalescing filters, capacitors)

• Test of combustors (diffusive and catalytic premixed)

• Test of Reactors for fuel processing (reforming, methanation, water shift)

• Test of catalytic filters (particulate removal, VOC)

In these activities I have gained competence in the selection and definition of measurement hardware, both of physical variables (pressure, differential pressure, temperature, particle size, opacity, radiation, etc.) and chemical variables in particular on gas mixtures (gas chromatography, measures IR-T/FTIR, TOC, chemiluminescence, etc.). With regard to the creation, implementation and management of the tests I mainly used National Instruments Labview, and PLC systems for less complex systems.

In terms of the development of methods and models for the use and application of new technologies, I have developed good skills in the implementation of simulation models of energy scenarios. The use of new technologies for energy saving or renewable power generation in fact involves costs and risk factors, which must somehow be evaluated through models and comparative perspectives. These models, developed on different software platforms such as MATLAB or LABVIEW, are intended to provide investors with decisionmaking tools to overcome the complete blindness in understanding the weight and the consequences implicit in the choice of a particular architecture rather than another. As part of the construction of such scenarios, I have also gained a good working knowledge of the assessment of the life cycle of processes and products (LCA, LCC platform GaBi).
