Exposure to blood-borne diseases such as HIV,
Hepatitis, Malaria, TB, Herpes and other bloodborne pathogens is a significant risk to health care
workers.
It is estimated that up to $ 1 Billion is spent in the US
annually in the testing a treatment of accidental needle
stick injury. *Who 2000 Papers and Reports Extracts
A 2005 study estimated the global burden of disease
attributed to contaminated sharps injuries among
healthcare workers found the following;
On a model of 14 geographical regions, overall 16,000
HSV, 66,000 HBV and 1000 HIV infections may
have occurred in the year 2000 worldwide among
healthcare workers due to their occupational exposure to
percutaneous injuries.
The fraction of infections with HCV, HBV and HIV
in health care workers attributable to occupational
exposure to needle stick injuries reads 39%, 37% and
4.4% respectively. It was concluded that occupational
exposures to needle stick injuries are a substantial
source of infections with blood-borne pathogens among
health care workers which is highly preventable with the
use of safety devices.
