Cub Scout Pack 222 News
Macedonia Baptist Church
Raleigh, NC
Sky-high Popcorn Prizes
Traditionally Pack 222 has tried adding
incentives to the popcorn fundraiser to
encourage Scouts to do their best.
In the past this has
been some sort of
party, and in one
case, the Cubmaster
even went bald at a
pack meeting.
This
year,
almost half the boys
in the Pack met the
challenge for their
individual sales goal
and got to participate in an outing to Paraclete
XP Indoor Skydiving Facility in Raeford, NC.
While Scouts can't go skydiving, there seems
to be no prohibition to entering a very, very,
VERY windy room.
Winner Class B T-shirts
In late 2012, www.classb.com sponsored a
contest on www.scoutingmagazine.org, with
the grand prize being a new Pinewood Derby
track. The Pack parents did there best to enter
daily, as the rules allowed. The Pack didn't
win first place, but did win the third-place
prize, which was Pinewood Derby T-shirts for
everyone in the Pack! So for our Pinewood
Derby, the uniform of the day was the custom
Pack Pinewood Derby T-shirt. The best part
was that the boys were allowed to pick the
design!
Gubernatorial Inauguration Parade
On Saturday, January 12, 2013, Cub Scout
Pack 222 and Troop 22, of Macedonia Baptist
Church, Raleigh, participated in the
gubernatorial inauguration parade. Afterwards
several of the Scouts toured the governor’s
mansion and several met the Governor and
other elected officials. One of our Scouts who had recently been
in an accident was even on TV with the
Governor.

Unleashing The Fire Within
Building a Legacy to Last a Lifetime
By Todd Goldfarb
Occoneechee Lodge Chief
On Friday, April 19, 2013, Scouts from across North Carolina descended upon Camp Durant for the annual
gathering of Cardinals, Conclave 2013! Although, we did not elect the pope, Occoneechee Lodge had a
blast hosting the Order of the Arrow Section SR7B with our ‘Southern Hospitality’ theme at the Cardinal
Conclave. With over a year in planning for this event, all eyes were on the Occoneechee Conclave
committee as the delegates arrived.
Conclave has a tradition of presenting awesome programs to the delegates. The Order of the Arrow
eXperierence (aka “OAX”) was a major hit with 44 exhibitors! Each exhibit was designed to teach
something, show something or make something. Indian Affairs competitions, Quest for the Golden Arrow,
and a pow wow were among the other programs. All of our hard work culminated at the Show on Saturday
night, ending with a fireworks display. Following the show, Occoneechee Lodge facilitated a new program
called Cardinival at the Grand Lodge. With smiles all around, the ten months of preparations had paid off.
The Occoneechee Lodge had more than 700 host team members and without the dedicated leadership of
our Conclave Chairman, Jonathan Boggs we would have never made it. Jonathan lead a team of a dozen
committee chairs and their Advisers who each served in a critical role. These consisted of Finance, Shows,
Logistics, Food, Traffic and Security, Health and Safety, Communications, Vigil Rededication, Campsite
Hosts, VIP, Ranger Action Team, Indian Affairs, Cardinival, and Trading Post.
As Conclave comes to a close, we remember the 1701 arrowmen at camp and the legacy we left. After this
weekend, the Occoneechee Lodge has it’s head held high with memories to last a lifetime. Next year, the
section moves to Camp Bowers with host, Klahican Lodge.

OCCONEECHEE COUNCIL, BSA
NATIONAL YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING
Friday, June 14 – Sunday, June 16, 2013 and
Friday, June 28 – Sunday, June 30, 2013
What is NYLT? – The National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) course was developed by the Boy Scouts of America to provide local
councils with a standardized training course for the youth leaders of Boy Scout troops, Varsity teams, and Venturing crews (male and female). This two extended-weekend course is designed to parallel and complement the training that their adult leaders receive in Wood
Badge. Experience shows that NYLT makes a positive difference in the lives of its graduates and in the operation of their units.
Course Content – NYLT uses the Patrol/Team Method in an outdoor setting to provide advanced training in Leadership Skills
(communication, finding a vision, setting goals, planning, team development, problem solving, Leading EDGE, Teaching EDGE, resolving
conflict, making ethical decisions, leading oneself, valuing people, etc.)
Prerequisite Requirements – NYLT is not designed to be the initial training for youth leaders. All participants will need considerable
experience in outdoor living skills and the maturity to relate to the in-depth concepts presented in the Leadership Skills area. Although the
course is a lot of fun, it is physically and mentally demanding. For these reasons, participants will need to meet the following requirements:
• Minimum age of 13. Boy Scouts and Varsity Scouts must be 13 years of age and fall within the maximum age allowance for their program registration with outstanding Scouting spirit and team-player attitude.
• Be First-Class rank or higher with considerable experience in outdoor living (including at least one year of summer camp) and have
completed Troop Leadership Training (TLT).
• Other youth participants must be at least 14 and fall within the maximum age allowance for their program. They must have completed Crew Officer Orientation, the Venturing Leadership Skills Course, or the new Crew Leadership Training. They must have an outstanding Scouting spirit, a team-player attitude and considerable experience in outdoor living.
• Good physical condition (must submit a completed copy of the Annual Health and Medical Record at beginning of course)
• Scoutmaster/Crew Leader’s recommendation (must submit Scoutmaster/Crew Leader Nomination Form)
Limited Enrollment – Participation is limited to the first 48 qualified Youth Leaders who preregister. The cost is $230 for the twoweekend course. Applicants will need to submit their application (along with Scoutmaster/Crew Leader Nomination Form and $75 preregistration fee) to the Council Service Center. All Scoutmasters/Crew Leaders will be mailed a packet of information which can also be
downloaded from www.ocscouts .org.
If your Scout is going to summer camp and there is an overlap with NYLT, they should be able attend both. Sundays are
check-in and orientation days at camp, but the Scout can join their unit even as late as Monday mornings and not miss any of the
merit badge program. Likewise, most of the merit badge instruction is completed on Thursdays and Fridays are make-up days which
would allow the Scout to leave camp in time to attend NYLT.
For more information – contact Richard Connelly at the e-mail address or phone numbers below, or call the Occoneechee Council Service Center at 919-872-4884.

will be provided upon acceptance into the course.
Wood Badge is the premier advanced hands-on
leadership skills experience offered to volunteers
of the Boy Scouts of America. Started by Sir
Robert S. Baden Powell, Wood Badge's primary
purpose is to strengthen Scouting in our units,
districts, and local council.
Encompassing two three-day weekends, the
Wood Badge course allows Scouters of all
backgrounds to come together at camp to extend
their understanding of the youth they lead and the
adults they work with, and to go to new levels of
personal growth and learning. Many describe this
course as a mountaintop experience in Scouting,
the most fun they have ever had as an adult
Scouter.
“Lead with Passion”
Wood Badge for the 21st Century
Wood Badge is open to all registered Scouters
who have completed the basic training
requirements for their primary Scouting position.
There is no minimum years of experience you
must complete in order to attend Wood Badge. In
fact, the earlier in your Scouting career that you
attend Wood Badge, the sooner you can put those
leadership skills to work to deliver the best
Scouting program to the youth you serve.
The course size is limited to 48 participants and
spaces fill up quickly.
