Greetings all! First let me say that I
am very honored and proud to serve
you as this year’s state President.
I want to thank everyone for your
support of FHEA. We have a new
Board of Directors that is strong
on leadership and experience and I
look forward to working with them
and accomplishing great things
this year. I was honored to have
received a letter from Governor
Rick Scott in recognition of my
appointment as President of FHEA. This is a first for FHEA
and I wanted to share this with everyone so a copy of the
letter is in this edition of the Whistle.
This year’s FHEA Spring Meeting will be held at the
Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort on May 9th and
10th. We have a great educational session with 35 table
top exhibitors lined up for Friday. Please register ASAP
if you have not already done so. And don’t forget the 6th
Annual golf tournament. Our golf guru Greg Hodgson has
arranged for this to be held at the LPGA course again. It
was a beautiful course when we played it four years ago.
Information about these events has been sent out to all
members and further info can be found on the FHEA.org
website. I hope to see you there!
The 2013 ASHE Annual meeting will be held July 21st
through 24th in Atlanta. I look forward to representing
FHEA at that meeting, and seeing many of you there.
Our 2012 ASHE chapter recognition application has been
completed and submitted. We have received the Platinum
Award three years in a row now and we believe we qualified
again and expect to receive the Platinum Award for 2012.
Thanks to Scott McCormick our State VP for assembling the
application.
SPRING 2013
Our 50th Annual Meeting and Trade Show was a huge
success and the Gala was fabulous. That’s a tough act to
follow but we are working hard to make the 51st just as
successful. Mark your calendars for October 7-9, 2013 at
the Hilton Orlando. The joint FHEA/AHCA registration
site is now open. We contacted George Mills with The
Joint Commission to secure him as a keynote speaker, and
although he was booked on those dates we were able to
confirm him to speak at next year’s Annual Meeting. We
can all look forward to that in 2014. In the meantime, as
our program for this year evolves, details will be made
available.
One of my goals this year as your President is to grow
our membership. I recently received the latest edition of
the FHA Directory and found a complete list of Florida
hospitals. There are 320 of
them. Alethea provided me with
a list of hospitals represented
by FHEA members and we
have members at only 124
hospitals. That’s only 38%.
I believe we can do better! Alethea and I met with FHA
on March 8th to discuss FHEA making a presentation to
their members. My thought process here is that if the ‘C
suite’ is knowledgeable about the value FHEA brings, they
will drive support to their respective Facility Directors
and Managers. Our meeting with FHA produced a good
exchange of information and ideas. We have requested
information about their member makeup so we can
determine if there is adequate market share of non FHEA
represented hospitals, who they are, and whether there is
value in making a presentation to them. We will keep you
posted as this develops. Remember you too can help with
membership by reaching out to those facility Directors
and Managers in your district and discuss FHEA value and
invite them to your meetings.
In closing I would like to say thank you to the Board
and you for your continued support. And a big thank you to
Alethea for doing such a great job as Executive Director.

50 YEARS!
As FHEA celebrated 50 years in 2012, so did former FHEA
executive director, Shelburn Wilkes and his beautiful
wife Rita. Soon after Shelburn addressed us at our Gala
celebration, the couple celebrated their 50th wedding
anniversary with a trip of a lifetime to Europe. They visited
many cities, even took in a couple operas, but the highlight
must have been their trip aboard the Orient Express!
