Welcome from the Program Chairs
Linda A. Treiber and Donald P. Woolley
Welcome to the 70th Annual Meeting of the Southern Sociological Society. We can’t
think of a better place to explore this year’s theme, Sociology with a Southern Face, than iconic
Atlanta, GA-the poster city for the New South. We hope you will enjoy this year’s formal
program as well as informal opportunities for socializing and networking. We know that many
deals have been sealed at the Southerns: job offers tendered, paper and book ideas conceived and
professional alliances made. Just as important are the life long friendships forged and sustained
at our annual meetings. We hope that you will benefit from this conference on a number of
levels.
We wish to thank the many people-some, very close to us and others, relative strangersfor their support and assistance in the production of this year’s program. First, we thank the SSS
members: this program is only made possible though membership participation. We received
nearly 600 submissions. Thanks again. We were very fortunate to have an excellent and helpful
Program Committee to organize this abundance. Special thanks to Astrid Gatling, Rita Keating
and Stan Paskoff of the Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy at Duke University for technical
assistance. We also wish to thank Martin Levin and other members of the Executive, Local
Arrangements and Exhibits Coordination Committees.
Finally, we wish to thank our SSS President, Dr. Ron Wimberley, who has long been an
inspiration to us both. Ron is the quintessential Southern Gentleman: the sort of person who
embodies kindness, compassion, high moral standards and scholarship. His splendid manners
and superior interpersonal skills are admired by the many students and colleagues he has
mentored over the years. Because of Dr. Ron Wimberley, we are not only better sociologists, but
we are also better people. Thanks, Dr. Wimberley, for showing us the ropes.
