FROM THE HEAD SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR
God’s blessing to all of my Brothers and Sisters in Christ.
I have once again enjoyed reading Paul’s letters to Timothy. They are filled with words of encouragement,
wisdom, guidance and love, especially for my calling as your Head Spiritual Director. But they are also pertinent for all
Christians. Paul concludes his 2nd letter to Timothy acknowledging that like the letter he is writing his life is also
coming to an end. Confidently Paul could say he had been faithful to his call, “I have fought the good fight, I have
finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord the
righteous Judge will award to me. . .”
When Paul wrote his 13 letters found in the New Testament he wrote them when he was in his late 40’s until
he died, in his mid 60’s. In his day he was a senior citizen. Today, we would say he is middle age.
The point I want to make is that age doesn’t matter when it comes to serving the Lord. Teenager, young
adult, middle age, or senior citizen is the perfect age to serve Christ, to do something for God.
WE should never think we are too young or too old. We should never think that we are not good enough or
talented enough. To think that way is to contradict scripture.
Each one of us, especially you, are wonderfully and beautifully made by God. He has a plan and a purpose for
each one of us.
Have you ever asked yourself, “What is God’s plan for me in my congregation or Cursillo?” I have and I know
the thinking is daunting and troubling.
I am absolutely confident that you, like myself have been called to be a part of the Cursillo community and
you congregation their ministries. God desires for us to work in His kingdom.
Not everyone is called to teach, or sing in the choir, or serve on this or that board or team. BUT everyone of
us is called by God to do something.
There are a multitude of tasks needing your assistance to make both your congregation and Cursillo a
growing ministry for Christ. The point is you and I serve as Christ first served us.
Please prayerfully consider how you can SERVE.
Pastor Del King, Secretariat Head Spiritual Director

Lutheran Cursillo Movement of Arizona, October 2016
Reflection
In our daily Bible reading together this past week one of the readings was from Second Corinthians chapter 4.
(I encourage you to read it again today). Del & I reflected on Paul’s message to the Corinthians and began sharing the
different areas of all our lives that this applies to, areas like all our church counsels, various Boards and ministry areas
in all our churches, even in Cursillo. Paul did not come to Corinth boasting about his own credentials. (Just as we
don’t come to boast as we serve on a Cursillo team). Rather he preached Christ crucified, and he relied on God to
convert and transform human hearts. His confidence came from God (and so does ours). The Lord who called him
also equipped him (just as He does for us when we are called to serve on a Cursillo team and share the good news of
Christ and of all our lives in Christ). In one short chapter Paul covers witnessing, discipleship, sin, faith and salvation –
sound like a Weekend you’ve attended?
So with the October Weekends fast approaching let us be praying for the participants, teams and all those
involved in making the Weekend become a reality, have you signed up on the prayer charts? It’s not too late.
II Corinthians 4:6
Patsy Lawrence, Secretariat President
Community --- we need your help!
Men’s Community Team Leader Bob Hernandez is looking for people to help set up for the October
Weekends on Wednesday, October 5th, starting at 4 PM. If you are willing to help, please call him at 623-2291976 or email him at roberthrnndz7@gmail.com.
Women’s Community Team Leader, David Kennedy can use a small crew on Wednesday, October 12th
and a very large crew at various times on Sunday, October 16th. Please call him at 623-229-1579 or email him at
dav1dg@msn.com.
Setting up for the Cursillo Weekend is a big task just as restoring everything to its original state on
Sunday of the Women’s Weekend. Please pray about this apostolic action. Many hands make light work, but
also make the job quite enjoyable. I know Men’s 149 and Women’s 150 teams appreciate your service.
With a grateful heart,
Traci Laasch, Secretariat Three-Day Chair
For many are called, but few are chosen. Matthew 22:14
Herb (Santa Herb) and his beautiful wife Cindy worship at St. John’s Lutheran Church in
Glendale and just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. We have 3 daughters and 5
grandchildren. I am a native Phoenician and grew up in west Phoenix and am “very” Lutheran.
Meaning that there were so many kids in my parent’s station wagon that I got left behind at
Grace in the City more than once. Except for being baptized in Chester, Ill., I grew up running
around the hallways of Grace Lutheran Evangelical Church (now Grace in the City) from
preschool through college before enlisting in the Army.
My wife and now 2 daughters returned from the Army and settled down in Maryvale
and Grace Lutheran once again. Unfortunately, as with many young couples, we put our jobs before church and
eventually we fell away from attending church and Sunday school. We moved to Glendale a short Time later and
were invited to join Westridge Lutheran Church but didn’t attend until the following Easter Sunday. We ran late and
2
Lutheran Cursillo Movement of Arizona, October 2016
ended up in the front row of this unfamiliar church. The music filled a void that I didn’t know even existed in me. My
loud mouth drew the attention of the pastor who kidded me about joining this small church’s choir and when the
choir ended the service with singing Handel’s Halleluiah chorus, I did just that and walked up and joined the choir for
a piece that I knew very well from my days at Grace. God knew what I needed and provided it. After about 13 years
at Westridge we moved on to St. John’s and have been there ever since.
My Cursillo experience started with turning down my sponsors for 3 years but you really can’t shake off Frank
Perran and he and God made me an offer I couldn’t refuse, so off I went to Weekend #111. And once again, God gave
me the gift of musical voice and table leaders that recognized the talented voices of all the men at that table. Even
though it’s not expected or anticipated, the men of the Table of Luke performed for the men of #111, the community
for #111 at Clausura, and even the women of #112.
I also need to thank Frank for introducing me to Chayah and the work of the volunteers of the Chayah
Ministries of Arizona as they bring Christ to the incarcerated youth of the Arizona prison system.
I am truly blessed with all those involved in my life since I turned my life over to God after I left the Army and
that includes all of my family in Cursillo and Chayah. I recently announced to the men of #149 that I’m the richest
man in the world because of all that he has given me through his grace and blood and that I deserve none of it. Yet
he does it because he loves me more than I can comprehend.
He called me and I came running to his call and then he chose me, his humble servant, to lead this team of
men for Weekend #149 for which I am profoundly honored to do with His help.

Search me, O God, and know my heart: test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point
out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.
Psalms 139:23-24
Hi my name is Yvonne Ziegler. My husband Mike and I worship at Light of the Desert in
North East Phoenix. Between us we have two sons, two great daughters in law and are blessed
with 4 grandchildren, ages 4 to 9 years old. I have work in the medical field for a very long time
(I could not bring myself to say how many years it has been because I can’t be that old!) as an
office manager.
As the years have gone by and my husband has gotten older our hobbies have changed.
We started out playing softball and a little golf and horseback riding. After a dozen surgeries or so we now enjoy long
range precision rifle and pistol shooting. I also enjoy reading and yard work.
I attended Cursillo weekend 103 and was very blessed. I started serving right away in the Chayah movement,
for incarcerated youth. That was how I served my first four weekends, then my husband encouraged me to serve on
a Cursillo weekend. As you all know the more you serve the more blessed you feel.
To be honest, I was a surprised by the call to be Rectora, but there it was and I prayed for wisdom and
guidance. God has blessed this weekend with a Pastor Kevin Ruffcorn, Pastor Paul Finley and Janice Zimbleman as our
spiritual leaders. In our team meetings I love looking around the circle and see how God is at work. So many people
who love the Lord and are willing to give up a bit of their lives to serve women they have never met before. I feel so
blessed to serve with them and the Pastors.
The 139 Psalm has been a favorate of mine for a long time. I love the intimacy that it shows about us and our
God. It has meant even more to me as I have grown in the process of this team formation and many times I have
asked God to search me and know my heart, if anything offends you Lord point it out to me.
I pray that God continue to lead and guide this team, that we would be a blessing to everyone who attends
and that our numbers would continue to grow. That we would grow closer to God and become more like our Lord
Jesus. All glory to God! Amen

NOTICE OF ANNUAL MEETING
Lutheran Cursillo Movement of Arizona
Pursuant to Articles 3.1 and 8 of the By-Laws of the Lutheran Cursillo Movement of Arizona, the Annual Meeting
will be held at Mt Calvary Lutheran Church, 5105 N. 7th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85013 at 1:00 p.m. on November 5,
2016.
At the Annual Meeting, the following business will be conducted:
1. Annual reports of officers/committees (includes Financial Report)
2. Proposed by-law changes (see below)
3. Elections to fill three vacancies on Secretariat. All are for a three-year term each beginning January 1, 2017
4. Installation of 2017 LCMA Board.
Dated this 23rd day of September, 2016.
Patsy Lawrence, President _______________________________/s/___________________________
Sally Anderson, Secretary ____________________________/s/___________________________
PROPOSED BY-LAW CHANGES
Article 5. Secretariat, 5.1. (e) Spiritual Director.
Currently Read As: (e) The Spiritual Director shall, with the Secretariat, have the general responsibility for the Cursillo
Movement. The Spiritual Director shall have specific responsibility to provide for the apostolic formation of the
leaders, to advise the corporation in spiritual matters, and to secure the services of pastors to work in various phases
of the movement, including, but not limited to that of Spiritual Directors for the three-day weekends and the
appointment of Spiritual Directors to each standing committee.
Proposed Amendment: Delete highlighted words.
(e) The Spiritual Director shall, with the Secretariat, have the general responsibility for the Cursillo Movement. The
Spiritual Director shall have specific responsibility to provide for the apostolic formation of the leaders, to advise the
corporation in spiritual matters, and to secure the services of pastors to work in various phases of the movement,
including, but not limited to that of Spiritual Directors for the three-day weekends and the appointment of Spiritual
Directors to each standing committee.
Rationale: At the Annual Meeting in 2015, we approved the change to Section 7.2 Leadership removing this
sentence: Each standing committee shall have a Spiritual Director. It was an oversight that this sentence in 5.1 was
not removed at the same time.
Article 5. Secretariat, 5.5. Powers and Duties
Currently Read As:
Section 5.5 – (e): Current policies are:
1) Attendance Policy – Secretariat
2) Essentials for the Weekend, with definitions
3) Team Service Eligibility
4) Cursillo Community with Vacant Pastor
5) Rector and Rectora Calling Policy
6) Secretariat Board Covenant Policy
7) Team Member Covenant Policy
Proposed Amendment: Section 5.5 – (e):
Add to Current policies:
8) Nominating Committee Policy
6
Lutheran Cursillo Movement of Arizona, October 2016
Rationale: Lutheran Cursillo Movement of Arizona (LCMA) Secretariat has added a new policy governing the makeup
and operation of the Nomination Committee called out in Article 5.4. Qualifications and Nomination to Secretariat
(e). This is only an update to the current list policies.
Article 6. Officers, Section 6.1 Designation of Titles.
Currently Read As: The officers of the Secretariat shall be elected by the Secretariat from its membership and shall
be a President, a Vice President, and a Secretary.
Proposed Amendment: Replace the paragraph in its entirety with: The Lutheran Cursillo Movement of Arizona
Secretariat shall have four officers: President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer.
Rationale: Secretariat has four officers but the Bylaws don’t currently reflect that fact.
Article 6. Officers, Section 6.7 Treasurer.
Last Sentence Currently Read As: No member of Secretariat shall serve more than a three year term as treasurer of
the corporation.
Proposed Amendment: Replace the sentence in its entirety with: No member of Secretariat shall serve more than
two (2) consecutive three year terms as treasurer of the corporation.
Rationale: This makes the term of service consistent with the rest of the Secretariat Board members.
2016 Election of Secretariat Members
LCMA Bylaws 5.4. Qualifications and Nomination to Secretariat.
A nominating committee, appointed by the Secretariat Board, will be responsible to develop a slate
of candidates for the membership to vote upon at the Annual Meeting of the voting membership. The
Committee will notify the community, at least, two months in advance of the Annual Meeting announcing
the positions up for election. This will allow the community the opportunity to submit the names of
qualified candidates, or their own name, to be added to the slate of candidates. The nominees shall be
listed in the October and November newsletters and presented at the Annual Meeting.
Nominations from the Community shall be submitted to the Nominating Committee one (1) month
prior to the Annual Meeting. All nominations from the Community must include documentation from the
nominee in compliance with the requirements in Article 5.4 (items a through e) of the Lutheran Cursillo
Movement of Arizona Bylaws.
No nominations from floor will be accepted at the Annual Meeting.
