The Sun is Shining on
Certified Organic Bergamot
Farmers in Calabria, Italy love their Bergamot plantations
and are championing certified organic agricultural farming
methods to produce their delicately fresh citrus oil.
At the southern tip of the italian mainland, Calabria is
renowned for its beautiful coastline and warm sunshine. There is a
stretch of land approximately 120 kilometres in length that is one
of the only places in the world where Bergamot trees grow heartily
and bear the sweet tangy fruit, rich with desirable essential oil.
It is in this region that the BioAssoberg farming cooperative
produces some of the finest Certified Organic Bergamot and
Bergamot Bergaptene-free essential oils available today and Sydney
Essential Oil Co. is proud to represent this unique and special
crop growing community.
The History of Bergamot in Calabria
The true origins of Bergamot are often disputed but it is believed
to have first been used for its essential oil in Reggio, Calabria in
the early 1700’s. An ‘eau de cologne’ was produced by Gian Paolo
Feminis and it is from this original scent development that the oil
has become synonymous with many high quality perfume products.
Genetics indicate that Bergamot, Citrus aurantium var.
bergamia, was a natural hybrid of the Lemon and Bitter Orange
citrus species. It is thought to have biologically mutated to form
the distinct fruit bearing tree that offered different properties both
in aroma and in flavour.
In the late 1700’s, in the French city of Nancy, a candy was
produced called “le bonbons à la bergamotte”. It was flavoured >

All parts of the fruit are
utilised. The delicate essential
oil is extracted from the peel and
the juice from the flesh is used
to flavour gelato, soft drinks
and even liqueurs. Above: Ripe

harvest
with Bergamot oil from Calabria and became a very popular sweet.
Bergamot farmers in Reggio were hard-working and dedicated to
producing excellent quality fruit. They were blessed with the ideal
land and climate for the trees to flourish and for two centuries,
farming families spent their lives working for the seasonal harvests.
Unfortunately, by the 1900’s, farming had become a difficult
profession to succeed financially and many families were simply
unable to live off the small income they earned. Bergamot
plantations were abandoned by farmers who left to seek
employment in other industries and by the 1970’s the number of
Bergamot producers reached an all time low.
The BioAssoberg Cooperative
In the mid-1990’s a small group of organic Bergamot farmers
came together to create a cooperative and BioAssoberg was
formed in 1997. The farmers were dedicated to Certified Organic
farming methods and believed they could successfully restore the
traditions of the past and bring life back to the Bergamot
economy in Calabria.
Together they researched the uses of Bergamot across many
industries internationally, enabling them to determine the best
markets to approach with their Certified Organic essential oils.
The tea industry was the first consideration, as large volumes of
Bergamot are used to flavour the popular Earl Grey tea. Also, many
perfume houses around the world sought the delicate aroma for their
fragrances. So BioAssoberg understood global demand was strong.
After achieving Organic Certification through I.C.E.A, they
began with a single customer who purchased their entire year’s
production. Since then they have continued to grow and are now
internationally recognised for their high quality, pure essential oils. >
Opposite clockwise from top: Reggio Calabria has the perfect micro-climate
for growing Bergamot. Fruit from each farmer within the coop is collected and
transferred to a communal processing facility, where the oil is pressed, quality tested
and super batched for lot management purposes. Green fruit appears on the trees in
summer and continues to ripen through until winter. In the past, the unripe fruit was
used to produce Nero or Black Bergamot oil. The BioAssoberg farming cooperative
produces high quality Bergamot essential oils through the cold press method.

harvest
Bergamot Farming
In the height of the harvest
season, hundreds of kilos of fruit are
collected in crates for transportation.
Below left: Whole fruit is spun
through a grating vessel to remove
the oil laden peel for pressing.
Bottom left: The fruit peel cycles
through the cold pressing unit to
extract the valuable essential oil.
High temperatures, balanced humidity, measured rainfall and over
200 days of sunshine a year, are the secrets to the region’s successful
growth of the Bergamot tree. The distinct micro-climate in Reggio,
Calabria provides the ideal environment for the plant to prosper.
Being a hybrid species, the Bergamot tree does not naturally
reproduce. In order to grow a new Bergamot tree, farmers must
graft a branch from a parent tree to the live stump of a bitter
orange tree. The bergamot branch slowly assimilates with the
bitter orange and eventually grows to approximately two metres in
height and four metres in width. Farmers configure their
plantations in this fashion and space their bergamot grafts in a
four by four metre pattern to allow for maximum growth. Each
new tree takes approximately four years to reach maturity and the
fruit is not harvested for oil production until the farmer is
confident of its quality.
The nature of organic farming is to allow plants to grow in their
most inherent state and as such many of the Calabrian farms
appear unkempt. Short grasses and other plant species are
intermingled as this ensures a harmonious balance is maintained.
Soil quality is high and the bergamot trees are supported by good
irrigation and constant sunlight.
Bergamot Harvest and Essential Oil Production
The resulting amber
green coloured oil
is rich in limonene, linalyl
acetate and linalool.
8
Gentle white flowers, similar to orange blossoms, appear in late
spring and early summer. They begin to form fruit in the height of
the hot season and this fruit matures and continues to ripen until
the winter harvest.
The harvest season is from November through to March and is
performed by the farmers and their friends and family. Extra
labour comes at a high price, so in order to minimise costs the
members of the BioAssoberg cooperative work together during
harvesting to ensure all the farms succeed.
Fruit is picked by hand and collected in crates for easy
transportation. On average each tree produces approximately
40 to 50 kilograms of fruit that is processed for essential oil
extraction. >
9
harvest
BioAssoberg Bergamot essential oil is extracted through the cold
press method. First, the fruit is agitated in a stainless steel grating
vessel that removes the fruit peel. This peel is then transferred to
the pressing unit. Through the press, the essential oil is collected
along with the water utilised to maintain temperature control.
All water molecules are removed through a centrifuge separator,
resulting in the highly aromatic, green-amber coloured oil.
Bergaptene-free essential oil is produced through distillation of the
pressed oil. Approximately 200 kilograms of fruit is required to
produce 1 kilogram of pure essential oil.
The peel-free whole fruit is then squeezed for juice that is
utilised in pharmaceutical and food applications and the
remaining plant material is fed as a food supplement to local farm
animals. This ensures there is no wastage from the essential oil
production cycle.
Certified Organic Bergamot oil
Certified Organic Bergamot oil is extremely popular in many
different applications. In perfumery, the Calabrian oil is often
incorporated to impart a lovely delicate citrus note. World famous
design houses such as Chanel, Dior and Shiseido have all utilised
the scent to create best selling fragrances.
In natural cosmetics, Bergaptene-free oil is more suited as it does
not cause photo-sensitivity. It can be included in cleansing
products as it offers wonderful anti-septic properties and helps to
reduce oily skin conditions. In creams, lotions and body butters,
not only does the oil provide a light refreshing aroma, but it also
helps improve skin tone and support healing.
Bergamot is also recognised for its deodorising properties and
can be included in body scent sprays or soap formulations. It helps
relieve emotional or nervous tension and the mildly sedating
aromatherapeutic properties make it an ideal choice for relaxation
massage or night time vaporising.
Certified Organic Bergamot oil is an excellent inclusion to your
essential oil range. If you have never experienced the liveliness it
brings, then we invite you to try it today. 1

About Plantec® Ingredients
The Plantec® range of products was originally developed around
olive and olive derivatives, and the range continues to evolve and
expand to include many other natural complexes providing
specific skin results.
Innovation in manufacturing techniques enabled advances into
specialised ingredients for hydration, anti-ageing, sun protection,
base stabilising and more. Some of the key benefits of CRM
International products relate to the multiple functions each
ingredient imparts within a cosmetic formulation. For example,
the Plantec® Olive Emulsifier HE20 binds molecules together
producing a light touch emulsion, whilst also offering rich
moisturising properties and strengthening the skin barrier. And,
Plantec® Olive Squalane provides an exceptional silky feel on the
skin along with hydrating and moisturising benefits, reducing the
appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

are ideal for use in a wide range of cosmetic applications and
should be considered by;
• cosmetic formulators, • regulatory compliance officers, and
• product and brand marketers.

ingredients that;
• are compliant in certified organic formulation as natural inputs,

About BioAssoberg
Italy’s finest Bergamot Oil

from Sydney Essential Oil Co.
BioAssoberg is an Italian cooperative of organic
bergamot farmers and essential oil producers. Based
in Reggio, Calabria, the cooperative formed in 1997
with the intention of offering Certified Organic
products direct from source. At the time, this was
unheard of in the region, as most essential oils were
sold by larger general trading companies.
But the three founding members of BioAssoberg

Certified Organic agricultural processes to the world. They felt
it was important to separate their company from the typical
economic farming cycle and create a new model for their
business. By doing this, BioAssoberg achieved successful
results annually and has now grown to represent 15 individual
farm owners.
They manage the production of oil from their own fruit,
enabling the farmers of BioAssoberg to have the capacity to sell
direct to major customers rather than being subjected to a
fluctuating trade environment. In turn they are able to offer a
stable price for their high quality oils and have been rewarded by
loyal, consistent customers who commit to forecasting annual
purchase cycles.
Prior to this initiative, Calabrian farmers sold whole fruit to
traders and for many years had little to no knowledge of how
their fruit was being utilised. But after their extensive market
research and infrastructure design, BioAssoberg incorporated
essential oil production into their business model and they have
successfully developed direct supply lines into a variety of
industries such as, tea, perfumery, pharmaceutical, cosmetics
and aromatherapy sectors.
They are 100% pure, 100% natural and certified organic (NOP).
The cooperative is certified through I.C.E.A and undergoes
regular audits to ensure all farmers adhere to the rigorous
international standards.
BioAssoberg’s Products
BioAssoberg’s Certified Organic Bergamot and Bergamot
Bergaptene-free oils are cold pressed from the peel of the bergamot
fruit. The odour profile is a very sparkling, green citrus and the
constituents are high in Limonene, Linalyl acetate and Linalool.
Aromatherapeutically, bergamot offers carminative, febrifuge
and stomachic properties. In cosmetic applications the oil is
recognised for its cleansing and antiseptic properties, along with a
beneficial deodorising action.
BioAssoberg’s oils are ideal for a variety of uses such as;
• essential oil and natural perfume blends
• natural and organic cosmetic formulations
• aromatherapy treatments
• massage or other bodywork modalities
BioAssoberg & Sydney Essential Oil Co.
BioAssoberg’s Certified Organic Guarantee
In the 1970’s, the international bergamot industry followed the
trend of utilising aroma chemicals and commercial grade bergamot
oils emerged on the market. The impact saw the reputation of pure
Bergamot essential oil drop and its value decrease dramatically, as
quality was difficult to validate and large volumes of manufactured
oil were now available at much lower prices.
So, in response to customer demand for genuine oil,
BioAssoberg produces oils that are Certified Organic. This
guarantees their products are of the purest and highest quality.

Sydney Essential Oil Co. is proud to have advanced its longstanding relationship with BioAssoberg into a formal distribution
contract for Australia, New Zealand and Asian regions. We offer
their Certified Organic Bergamot oil and Bergaptene-free oil in
bulk volume through to small pack sizes. All products will be
supplied with fully traceable batch information of the Certificate
of Analysis.
