One of the most outstanding trends in
contemporary architectural design is an
elegant minimalism. SPAN is designed to
pack a maximum amount of functionality into
a compact, simple package. This expression
of functionalism allows SPAN to compliment
buildings of this type without adding visual
complexity. At the same tine, the anachronistic
austerity of the design allows it to integrate with
a plethora of other contemporary styles without
competing with the architecture.
SPAN gives readers four degrees of easily
and intuitively controlled motion in order to
maximize the effective illumination of the task
and to minimize veiling reflections.
SPAN is designed for durability, using rugged
all-steel construction to stand up to years
of public use. All wiring is internal and no
complicated electrical connections or joints are
used. The ballast is hidden within the base
of the lamps but slides out for easy service or
replacement. Relamping is tool-free, fast, and
simple.

With Four Degrees of Motion SPAN Can Accommodate Almost Any Reading Position

Pivot
SPAN’s entire optical armature is capable of
rotating nearly 90 degrees in either direction.
The base is capable of adjusting from 500mm
to 900mm in height to accommodate different reading angles and to allow users to minimize veiling reflections.
The optical armature can swing a full 360
degrees to minimize glare, veiling reflections, and shadows on the task.
The arm can pivot in any direction, providing
readers with a variety of heights and angles
to choose from. SPAN can also fold for ease
of storage or shipping.

Stainless Steel Reflector
Integrated Punched Baffles
While tight optical control of compact fluorescent lamps is difficult to attain, SPAN uses a
combination of stainless steel reflectors and
punched baffles to direct the light and reduce
the possibility of glare.
SPAN’s optical system is designed to cast a
diffuse blob of light over the reading area.
Additionally, there is an insignificant uplight
component included for both aesthetics and
as an indication that the light is on.
Convection Cooling
Visual Comfort
As the High Output lamp begins to warm, it
will heat the air inside the shield, and that air
will begin to rise. Thanks to ventilation holes
in the top of the shield, this air is expelled,
and cool air moves in through the baffles
to replace it. This cycle can also reduce
Luminaire Dirt Depreciation. The vent holes
are positioned to allow a small amount of
light to escape, which can indicate that the
lamp is on, even when SPAN is directed away
from you.
The baffles and reflectors minimize light escaping at steep angles to the fixture in order
to reduce glare. The bare lamp, which being
a T5 can cause discomfort glare. The flexibility of the system allows users to manually
adjust the fixture to reduce veiling reflections on reading materials, even in a number
of different positions.

Quick, Tool-Free Relamping and Cleaning Saves in Maintenance Costs
Lamps & Relamping
1.
SPAN is designed for use with a single
21.6 inch 14 watt T5 linear fluorescent
lamp. This lamp’s rated mean lumen
output is 1270 lumens, which is calculated to provide between around 750
lux over a one meter square work area.
As explained below, these estimates are
not (and cannot) be overly exact given
SPAN’s extreme flexibility.
2.
In some applications, greater light
output might be required or desired.
Alternate lamps include the 21.6 inch
24w “High Output” T5. Using this lamp
is estimated to provide 1100lx on the
work plane. For energy conservation
concerns, it is recommend that application of high output lamps be limited to
situations where ambient light levels are
extremely low or elderly patronage is
anticipated.

Cleaning & Relamping
In the renderings to the left case, SPAN
has been ‘swung’ to provide over - the
- shoulder reading light and has been
‘rotated’ about fifteen degrees from
vertical. SPAN’s efficiency factor is estimated at sixty percent.
SPAN is designed to allow easy, tool-free
maintenance and cleaning. The Lamp
Shield is simply unscrewed and slid away
to reveal the lamps and optics.
Since SPAN is designed to ‘rotate,’ ‘elevate,’ ‘swing,’ and ‘pivot,’ work plane
illuminance can very. In this case, SPAN
has been positioned at 750mm over the
work plane.

No-Damage Clamp System
SPAN’s integrated table clamp can mount
on the edge of tables from 10 to 65mm
in thickness without tools and in seconds.
Like a simple ‘C-clamp,’ Simply turn the
knob at the bottom to adjust to table
thickness, and then tighten. Non-slip
neoprene rubber pads ensure a tight grip
and prevent damage to the table top from
abrasive metal elements.
