eflecting back on this year, I am heartened to see so many good things
happening in our city as well as our neighborhood. This is a time of renewal
for the city center and our neighborhoods, and that is good for the entire region.
I urge you to visit downtown, and nearby neighborhoods. There are unique and
fun destinations throughout the city that have their own unique vibe, as does our
own Kamm’s Corners.
Each year in the holiday issue of this magazine, I implore you to shop locally
for your gifts. Really think about the unique opportunities right around us, or
in those nearby city neighborhoods. Keep your dollars within city limits with local merchants. Those are the folks who support your children’s raffles, sponsor
community events, and make this the great community it is. Take a moment to
read the article on page 8 about local shopping. One hand washes the other–let’s
lather it up locally!
In the pages that follow, you will see that our only fundraiser of the year, Wine
in the Holidays, is quickly approaching on November 29th, with the amazing
AMP150 restaurant inside the Marriott hotel again catering the event. Join us
and celebrate with your neighbors in the greenhouse at Puritas Nursery. Great
food, music, and of course wine, beer, and holiday cheer! Please support our work
in Kamm’s Corners.
And finally, I want to personally thank all of the volunteers, sponsors, and
members that have supported our activities to benefit the neighborhood this year.
Our Board of Trustees will be leading a Strategic Planning process beginning in
January. All of our stakeholders, and especially neighborhood residents, will be
asked to contribute their thoughts to the planning effort. The updated plan will
help us advance our mission to “promote, develop, and guide the Kamm’s Corners
neighborhood as the best place to live, work, shop, worship, and play.”
Have a safe and prosperous holiday season, and as always, let us know how
we’re doing.
Our Cover: The delightful holiday treats gracing our cover were made
from scratch by Laurie Pantelemon. In addition to being a talented artist,
Laurie also bakes many goodies for Savor the Moment Coffee Shop which
is owned and managed by her husband, Jim. The cover photo is a custom
creation by noted area photographer and West Park resident Gary Yasaki.
Many thanks to Laurie and Gary for so generously donating their time and
talent to spreading holiday cheer! Call Yasaki Photographic at (216) 781-7330

News from Ward 19 and City Hall
Dear Neighbor:
Sandy is gone but not forgotten.
The carnage left by the storm was
unprecedented. Ward 19, the City
of Cleveland, the region, and the
entire east coast felt its wrath. Once
again, as I’ve said after other bad
storms, I am so proud of West Park.
We had neighbors helping
neighbors to make it through.
Freezer space was shared with
those who lost power. And,
when the temperature dropped,
neighbors with power took in those
without. The kids really enjoyed
the overnight stays, not only to
stay warm, but also to charge their
electronic devices. I am so proud to
call West Park home!
However, the response from
our utility provider left a lot to
be desired. I fully understand
the severity of the storm caused
widespread power loss, and
restoring it is a dangerous job. I am
grateful for those who climb poles
and cut trees in dire conditions to
restore our power. However, when
the electricity is out for 5, 6, and
7 days without a crew in sight,
information is paramount! Accurate
information and status updates were
needed but not forthcoming, leaving
us in the dark in more ways than
one.
In other news, our local Municipal
Planning Organization NOACA
recently approved the final list for
transportation projects for next
year. Over $5 million dollars will be
invested to resurface and upgrade
Triskett Road from Lorain Avenue
to West 117th Street as well as
Warren Road from Munn Road to
Lorain Avenue. Resurfacing Triskett
5
is one of the most significant
projects slated for next year, and
we all know how much it is needed.
Our gratitude goes out to both
the City and NOACA staff for
scheduling both of these streets for
completion.
Please lock your cars doors!
Car break-ins are happening in
every corner of the Ward and at
varying times, with 97% of them
on unlocked cars. So, please take
the extra precaution and lock your
car doors! Thieves are looking for
anything not tied down and can hit
in seconds. This is not unique to
our neighborhood or the city. It is
happening throughout Cuyahoga
County. If you have experienced a
break in, please call the police and
make a record of the theft. Or, call
my office so I can pass it along to
the First District.
On a happier note, it’s Holiday
Season! Please join in one of our
many upcoming holiday events
listed in the pages of this magazine.
As always, be sure to remember
to shop locally this holiday season.
It’s remarkable how many unique
gifts and services are available
right here in the West Park
neighborhood. New venues are
popping up along with our long
lasting partners.
I understand the attraction of the
outlying malls, but I’ve said it before
and I’ll say it again – I believe you
can find whatever you need right
here in Ward 19!
Happy Holidays to all!

Wine in the Holidays
Planning a Party?
Whether you are looking for a
great place to host your company’s
holiday party -- or seeking a dining
experience a cut above -- AMP150
is the place to go! Featuring modern American cuisine, built upon
foundations of flavor, freshness,
and innovation, AMP150 is a 200seat restaurant and bar with an
open casual feel, playing up-beat
rock and roll and serving tasty selections all priced under $20. There
is also a private dining room that
accommodates up to 30 people.
For AMP150, being “green” is a
passion, not a marketing gimmick.
With a farm-to-table approach for
over 15 years in his restaurants,
Chef Jeff Jarrett has spent his
life exemplifying how ingredients
define the experience.
The chef turns to the talents of
regional farmers and artisans to
collect foodstuffs raised, crafted
and harvested locally so that each
dish is created from only the most
natural, farm fresh, and pristine
ingredients. The result is a handcrafted menu created with contemporary innovation, and deep
flavors at their peak of quality.
Anyone who sampled the food at
the KCDC fundraiser “Wine in the
Holidays” last year will agree!
AMP150 is at 4277 West 150th
Street in the Marriott Hotel. Call
216-706-8787. To book their private dining room for a large party,

Winter Wonderland Returns
At 6 p.m. on Friday, November 30, gather under the clock in Downtown
Kamm’s Corners at Lorain Avenue and Rocky River Drive for an old-fashioned
holiday sing-along!
Cecilia’s Song, an a cappella choir from Saint Joseph Academy, will sing
holiday tunes. A ceremonial “turning on of the lights” will take place followed
by a brief presentation to the first place winner of the Downtown Kamm’s
Corners storefront decorating contest. The singing will resume and everyone
will be invited to join in
the caroling. The West
Park Kiwanis Club will
serve hot chocolate until
Santa and Mrs. Claus
arrive by horse-drawn
sleigh to greet the assembly.
Then all will follow
Santa to Kamms Plaza
for a Winter Wonderland
from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
where the theme is Step
into the Warmth of a
Hawaiian Luau! Santa
and Mrs. Claus will pose
Cecilia’s Song
for pictures. Balloon
creatures will be given away. Cookies, popcorn, and a beverage will be served.
Volunteers from Saint Joseph Academy Key Club will assist. You may win a
great door prize donated
by local merchants. A big
drawing occurs at around
8 p.m. for two televisions,
a DVD player, and an
MP3 Player, all donated
by Kamms Plaza. (Adults
only for the big drawing,
please.) This free event is
sponsored by Kamms Plaza
Shopping Center with the
support of KCDC.
Sleigh rides around
Kamms Plaza will take
place that night and conSanta and Mrs. Clause lead the way to Kamm’s Plaza!
tinue free of charge on
Friday December 7 and 14. The complimentary sleigh rides depart from the
tower corners at 6 p.m. and run till 8 p.m. Heavy rain or ice will cause the
rides to be cancelled. Otherwise, bundle up and enjoy!
Festive Lights Return to Kamm’s Corners
For the winter holidays, downtown Kamm’s Corners brightens up with a
combination of white tree lights and festive red banners for 20 light poles.
The tree lights are LED’s which use little electricity and last for many years.
They will remain in place throughout the holiday season.
While the tree lights will be illuminated just prior to Thanksgiving, a special
lighting ceremony to officially illuminate downtown will be held in conjunction with Winter Wonderland under the clock on November 30. Please join
us for the fun!
Funding was made possible through fundraisers like Wine in the Holidays
(coming up November 29!), as well as membership dues from area merchants
and Friends of Kamm’s Corners.

Father Ols Formally Installed Shopping Here Makes Us Richer
All year long, but especially during holiday shopping,
as St. Pat’s Pastor
keep in mind how locally owned independent businesses
The parishioners of St. Pat’s West Park joined in celebration at a special Mass on October 6 as Bishop Richard
Lennon installed Father James Ols as Pastor of the recently
re-opened church at 4427 Rocky River Drive. Also celebrating at the Mass was former St. Pat’s pastor, Father Tom
Hagedorn, who had served the parish for 22 years when its
doors were ordered closed in May 2010 by Bishop Lennon.
Thanks to the successful efforts of the parishioners in
filing an appeal with Rome, the church, which was established in 1848, was re-opened in July. Bishop Lennon, Father
Hagedorn, and other priests and deacons celebrate the Mass
and joined in the reception that followed.
Father James Ols, Pastor of St. Pat’s West Park, and Pat Singleton,
parishioner and former head of the Save St. Pat’s Committee.

return a great deal to the community. It is called the multiplier effect: one dollar spent at a locally owned business
comes back to the community through city taxes, employer
wages, and contributions to local non-profit organizations.
Also, the unique character of our community is defined
in large part by the businesses we have here – and that
plays a big factor in your overall satisfaction with where
you live and the value of your home and property. We
want our local businesses to thrive! An added bonus to
shopping locally is the customer service is better because
it is more personal. After all, you see your local merchants
day after day both in their shops and around town – and
they see you! So, you matter more to them, too.
Shop for gifts or services at the local stores that add
to the character that is Kamm’s Corners. Each time you
choose to spend your dollars here, you increase the vitality of your neighborhood. While on your holiday outings,
dine at local owner operated restaurants and leave your
server a nice tip, too. Spread the happiness!

Beth Israel –
The West Temple
Installs New Rabbi
The congregation celebrated Rabbi
Enid C. Lader’s installation as Beth
Israel-The West Temple’s Rabbi at a
festive Sabbath service on Saturday,
November 10. The temple is at 14308
Triskett Road.
Congregation president Matt
Barratt said, “Rabbi Lader is not only
the newest rabbi in the synagogue’s
58-year history, she is also the longestserving, having been a leader of the
congregation for many years while
other rabbis have come and gone.”
A member for over 30 years, Rabbi
Lader has served as religious schoolteacher and principal, director of
congregational and family education,
cantorial soloist, service leader, and
all-around go-to resource. A “Rabbinic
Aide,” she was qualified to lead services and officiate at life cycle events.
In 1994, she completed her Master of
Jewish Studies degree from Cleveland
College of Jewish Studies, with a spe-
cialty in Jewish Education. She completed the five-year rabbinic curriculum at
the Academy for Jewish Religion in New York and was ordained in 2010. From
2002 to 2012, she served as part time Jewish life coordinator (a lay spiritual
leader), a student rabbi, and rabbi at Knesseth Israel Temple in Wooster, Ohio.
Rabbi Lader was raised in Southern Florida and received bachelor’s and
master’s degrees in music therapy and music education from Florida State
University. She moved to Lakewood in 1982, with here husband, Harry, where
they raised two daughters.
Retired Rabbi Sally Priesand of Monmouth, New Jersey, was an honored

Home Performance
Sunny skies complemented the joyous mood Sunday,
September 9, as a crowd of more than 600 sisters from the
Congregation of St. Joseph (CSJ), alumnae, and friends
of Saint Joseph Academy (SJA) celebrated the completion
of a new dining hall and outdoor learning spaces with a
special ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Construction for the first phase of the Academy’s $7.8
million Capital Campaign Expanding Minds ~ Building
Futures ~ Raising Leaders, began in March. The renovation doubled the cafeteria space in the 1928 school building,
as well as created a porch, terrace, and rain garden. The
remainder of the critical project will upgrade the original
85-year-old electric and heating infrastructure, and improve the fire suppression system, making the building
safe, secure, and comfortable.
The new, spacious dining hall overlooks the 44 acres
purchased in 1898 in what is now West Park, by Mother
Theresa Fitzmaurice of the Congregation of St. Joseph.
The new dining hall will allow SJA students to eat lunch,
collaborate on projects, and access a range of multi-media
technologies in both large and small group settings. The outdoor areas – The Scholars’ Porch and The Howley Terrace
– will be used for both formal and informal programs.
“ ‘On time and on budget’ are five words every owner
and project manager loves to hear, and we did just that
with this impressive and challenging project,” shared SJA
President Mary Ann Corrigan-Davis. “It was less than six
months ago, on a bright and beautiful spring morning, that
we broke ground on this transformational project. The
wonderful physical changes that awaited the girls as they
came back to school – the new dining hall, The Howley
Terrace and The Scholars’ Porch – are a testament to the
dedicated group of men and women who worked so hard
for the last five years to make it all happen.”
Before the ribbon cutting, Sisters from the CSJ, alumnae, and friends of Saint Joseph Academy gathered in the
Academy Center for a Donor Mass honoring all those who
have contributed so much to the students of Saint Joseph
Academy in the past year.

Warren Village Hair Salon
Offers Spa Experience
…by Marilyn Osborne
Indulge in upscale salon
services within the relaxed
atmosphere of Solstice Salon,
where clients are treated to
boutique services at reasonable prices. All hair types are
serviced at this new salon at
3352 Warren Road in Warren
Village Shopping Center.
Expert haircuts are offered for men, women, and
children. Amazing color
treatment includes single
or double process, partial
highlights, full highlights,
re-touching, or clear gloss. Celebrating the salon’s opening are (from left) Steven Gumm, Jessica

offered, too, such as Global
Keratin hair taming or Design Essentials Relaxer. Waxing is available for
eyebrows, arms, lips, and legs.
“Our goal is to keep every client feeling pampered and relaxed,” said salon
owner Rachel Bryant, who has been a professional stylist for 13 years. For
the past seven years, she has been an artistic educator for the Matrix product
line. “I travel to Matrix salons and educate others on hair color, new products,
and new techniques and trends in our industry,” she said.
She started her first salon in 2008
in Lakewood. It was a boutique style,
trendy place and such a success that
she decided to expand into a larger
space. In May, Solstice Salon opened
here.
A new client described her recent
experience at the salon. “The first
thing that shines (besides my hair) is
my memory of the shampoo chairs and
bowls. I have never enjoyed a more
comfortable seat and neck rest. And,
Ergonomically angled massage chairs add pleasure to no, I am not talking solely about the
the shampoo and conditioning experience.
bonus massage chair.”
She continued, “It was the angle of the chair-back where it met the bowl! I
felt absolutely NO neck strain. At other salons, it sometimes took the duration
of the cut or blow dry to work out a kink caused by an uncomfortable set up.
Seriously, who wants to be wishing the time would pass faster when someone
is shampooing and conditioning your hair for you?”
Quarterly, the salon hosts a spa night. Some have a fixed rate where participants may select from a menu of options such as deep conditioning hair
treatment, reflexology, paraffin hand waxing, back massage, or henna tattoos.
Others are free of charge. It’s a clever way to introduce new services to the
hair spa client.
The next salon event “Hollywood Hair in Ten Minutes” takes place on
December 14th from 5 to 8 p.m. The focus that night is to provide one-on-one
education from Solstice stylists to teach clients easy at-home hair techniques.
The event is free of charge, including exclusive gift card, product, and styling
tool promotions only available during the event. No Solstice event is complete
without their signature martinis and hors d’oeuvres. Make a reservation to
attend spa night or to visit the salon by calling 216-226-7777.

Red Seal Electric
Completes Major
Interior Renovation
…by Marilyn Osborne
In July, Red Seal Electric Company,
3835 West 150th Street, completed a
major remodeling of their office building’s interior. “Our original intent
was to simply remodel the lunchroom,
paint the office, and improve some
spaces for better workflow and collaboration,” said company president
Dan Stryffeler. “But, after seeing the
architect’s concept of what could be
achieved, we went for a total gut job!”
The half-million dollar renovation
project includes remodeled offices that
incorporate high efficiency computer
controlled lighting and updated heating and air conditioning. The office’s
walls were restructured and new
drywall was installed and painted.
Also included are a built-in reception
counter, custom desks, and employee
lockers.
A state-of-the-art multi-purpose
room was constructed, which is larger
than the old lunchroom because part of
a meeting room was added to the area.
A new conference room was installed,
too, with unique lighting made from
repurposed vintage explosion proof
light fixtures.
The project was completed in six
months while the site was occupied.
Red Seal employees continued busi-

ness from the site, meeting customer needs. “The consensus was that the end
result was worth the temporary discomfort of moving office operations to the
warehouse,” explained Dan. “We are here in business to stay!”
Named the Red Seal Electric Company in June, 1952, the company was
founded in 1946 as the Durolet Manufacturing Company. The first product
offerings were proprietary electrical insulation devices for the open wiring
systems utilized in steel mills.
While still producing these products, Red
Seal has evolved into a
complete machine shop
for fabricating composite materials. Markets
served include food and
material handling, electro-magnet manufacturing and repair, rubber
molding, power generation and transmission,
induction heating, water treatment and glass
manufacturing. Virtually
any manufacturing process that needs thermal,
electrical, or mechanical
insulation.
Dan attributes much
of their success simply
to “doing what we say
we are going to do.” Red
Seal Electric is a KCDC
business member, and
we are grateful for their
commitment to our community.
Before…
To help out with the Red Seal Office Remodel, Matthew
Supina of Cub Scout Pack 3409 completed a coat rack
for our temporary office space. Matthew earned a ‘5E
Wolf Badge’ requirement and a “Computer’ Belt Loop.

Home Care by Seniors for Seniors
Shining a Light on
Outstanding Philanthropy
The Community West Foundation’s
Legacy Society Dinner is a special reception for its most loyal and devoted
supporters. Legacy Society members are
known for their amazing generosity. A
highlight of this wonderful celebration of
philanthropy includes the presentation of
the Art of Caring Award, the Foundation’s
highest accolade. This year’s honoree is
celebrated surgeon and philanthropist,
Dr. Joyesh Raj.
Dr. Raj is the youngest recipient of the
award, making a large impression within
his community and beyond. Joyesh has
embraced service and sacrifice, and his
commitment to philanthropy is significant.
While Dr. Raj’s service has been felt
throughout the community, country, and
beyond, we are fortunate that he returned
to Cleveland where he has offered his
expertise as Chief of Plastic Surgery at
Fairview Hospital since 2004.
Dr. Raj is as generous with his time as
he is with his resources. He gives widely
to many philanthropic causes through his
Donor Advised Fund at the Community
West Foundation.
“Dr. Joyesh Raj’s service has been
exemplary,” said David T. Dombrowiak,
President and CEO of the Community
West Foundation. “He possesses the ability to generate warmth and well being for
others. His ‘Largess of Heart’ is shining
bright and Illuminating Hope!”
There’s a huge difference in the kind of home care you
can receive from someone who really understands
what your life is like as a senior. The concerns you
have. The need for independence. Someone who

continue to bring their seasonal offerings of the best foods Ohio
ET
has to offer. The Kamm’s Corners Farmers Market always heats
up as the weather cools.
The impressive array of local foods to buy and eat through the
autumn and winter include Ohio-raised meats, eggs and cheeses,
maple syrup, honey and a variety of preserved foods such as peppers, pickles, jams, salsas, and sauces. Farmers will also offer
storage crops such as apples, winter squash, potatoes, and other
root vegetables.
Area vendors will provide baked goods, pasta, pierogies, prepared food, spices, tea and coffee, oils and vinegars,
soaps and lotions, knife sharpening, local art, and hand crafted items.
Supporting a local food system means supporting your region: the environment, the community, and the local
economy. Eating local food is healthier for our environment because it requires less fossil fuel to transport and little
or no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Locally grown food is healthier than food important or transported over long
distances, because it is both fresher with more nutrients and less susceptible to contamination due to its short journey from farm to plate
Food grown and sold locally is also healthier for the regional economy because it lends support to local farmers and
cottage industries. It also increases pedestrian traffic to traditional mom-and-pop storefronts. Local food deemphasizes big box stores, chain restaurants, and fast food, and re-introduces aspects of community long forgotten, where
people know the farmers who produce their food.

Welcome to
Throw Backs
Sports Pub
…by Cindy Janis
Adam Wilson and Mike Romano
took over the operation of Price’s
Irish Pub, 16612 Lorain Avenue, in
June 2010. They became the new
owners of the business in March
2011, and began the process of establishing a new name and identity
for the well know neighborhood
pub.
“We had a dream of becoming
your friendly neighborhood sports
pub,” said Adam. “We chose the
name Throw Backs Sports Pub
to celebrate past sport teams and
events and as an invitation to throw
back a few beverages.”
The throwback sports theme is
evident throughout the pub. The
walls are filled with framed photos
of past Cleveland sports teams and
news articles, including a team
photo of the 1964 Browns. Photos
of sports legends Babe Ruth, Joe
DiMaggio, and famous racehorse
Sea Biscuit are part of the sports
wall of fame.
The pub is a gathering place to
show your team spirit, and to enjoy
free popcorn and hot dogs while
watching your favorite games. And,
if you want to try your hand at a
competitive game, two dartboards
and a pool table are available.
“We have eight televisions: six

have the NFL Ticket to broadcast
all the NFL games. Many times
we have several different games
playing, so there is something for
everyone,” said Adam.
Last month, the owners replaced
the old carpet with a new hardwood
floor. Also, the awning was recovered with dark brown canvas to
compliment the orange and brown
colors in their new building sign.
“We love our new sign. It’s great
to see our name on the building,”
Adam said. “It’s the finishing

Hogan’s Corners
…by Gary Swilik
For thirty years the crossroads at
Rocky River Drive and Brookpark
Road was popularly known as Hogan’s
Corners. The name was derived from
a well-patronized grocery store,
owned by local resident James Hogan,
which stood at that busy intersection.
“Hogan’s Corners” is largely forgotten but there was a time when it was
nearly as well known as Kamm’s
Corners.
James Michael Hogan was born in
Cuyahoga County on December 26,
1872, son of John Hogan, a veteran of
the Civil War who was at the Battles
of Antietam and Gettysburg. James
grew up on his father’s farm on Rocky
River Drive. In May 1901, he opened a
grocery store at the northwest corner
of Rocky River Drive and Brookpark
Road. During the first few months,
while the store was under construction, the business operated from temporary quarters in a large tent. In June
1909, James moved the store across
the street into a new building at the
northeast corner of the intersection,
at 4995 Rocky River Drive, where it
remained in business until about 1930.
In 1902, James Hogan wed Mary
Lammermeier, and the couple had two
daughters: Florence, born in 1903,
and Gertrude, born in 1905. Hogan’s
Grocery was not only the family business but their home as well. James’
younger brother, John Jr., helped by
working as the grocery deliveryman.
James Hogan’s granddaughter,
Mary Lou Stesny, of Berea, Ohio, recalls hearing about the store from her
mother Gertrude. “I wasn’t born until

was told there were two gas pumps in
front of the building. My grandfather

Balancing Room Offers Eden Energy Medicine
for Vibrancy, Resilience, and Comfort
In the quaint 1927 building on the Cleveland side of Fischer Road at 16903, something
extraordinary happens. People learn how to work with their own energy to feel better in
Balancing Room, founded by Sarah Buck, Clinical Practitioner of Eden Energy Medicine.
For more than four years, she has been teaching people to understand the body as
an energy system, to recognize their aches and pains as signals of energy imbalance,
and to reclaim their natural healing capabilities. “Energy medicine is especially helpful for those who give of themselves in their work,” Sarah explained. “Public workers,
parents, home helpers, social workers – really anyone who is routinely exposed to other
people’s pain and trauma.”
With a master’s degree in counseling, Sarah previously worked exclusively with survivors of sexual assault. During that period, she noticed the great benefits she received
from a good massage and the increased energy that flowed afterward. But, it always
dissipated. So, she sought information about how to tap into that magical energy and
make it last. She found it in a book: Energy Medicine by Donna Eden. In it, she learned
how each person can keep his or her own energy flowing. Next, she completed a twoSarah J. Buck, Eden Energy Medicine

their personal energies become stronger
and more resilient.
She offers individual sessions and classes on how to activate and balance each client’s
basic energy flows with techniques to feel more vibrant every day.
An initial session begins with a conversation and basic assessment of the client’s energy flows. Simple energy tests
are performed to identify strengths and imbalances. Then, the client lies on a table (fully clothed), while Sarah works
directly with the subtle energy flows, encouraging the energies to reach greater connection, balance and comfort. At
times she is touching the body, and at other times her hands are a few inches away from the body, depending on which
energy patterns are being addressed. Lastly, energy exercises are provided with training enough so that the client can
perform them at home to increase resilience and vibrancy – and improve mood.
Sarah also offers small classes for those who tend to the needs of others – Energy Medicine for Those Who Give, and
also Energy Medicine for Women, relating to hormonal energy. Details are at balancingroom.com. To make an appointment, call 216-221-8833.

Our Lady of Angels Parish Celebrates 90 Years in West Park
Our Lady of Angels (OLA) Parish is celebrating its 90th Anniversary in
2013. Members of the parish began the celebration with a kick-off brunch on
November 11 after Mass. More celebrations will continue with planned events
throughout 2013.
OLA originated with the Franciscan Friars of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Province. They purchased property on Rocky River Drive to establish a monastery. That monastery contained a small frame chapel, which was dedicated
with a name change to Our Lady of Angels on July 13, 1906.
In 1907, the OLA Seminary opened, serving as a house of philosophy and
theology for clerics studying for the priesthood. Father Linus Koenumond was
appointed the superior of the seminary and friary, more commonly known as

“The Monastery.”
Originally part of the St. Pat’s West Park Parish, OLA Parish was officially
established on November 26, 1922, by Bishop Joseph Schrembs. In 1923, ground
was broken for the OLA School Building, which is just south of the existing
church building. Today, many West Park residents attended OLA School.
Currently, it has over 400 students enrolled and is one of the largest parochial
schools in Greater Cleveland. A second primary building was added in 1962,
which is directly behind Linus Hall.
Ground was broken on March 24, 1941, for a blonde brick church building
with limestone trim, which is the current church. A new gallery organ was
installed in 1943. The seventy-foot tall bell tower installed in 1955, contains
bells that originally hung in the tower of Old St. Peters in Chicago, Illinois.

nary moved to Quincy, Illinois, in 1964.
Linus Hall was built in 1955. The hall is named after Father Linus Koenumond, who played an instrumental role
in the development of Our Lady of Angels Church. Linus Hall contains the gymnasium, cafeteria, auditorium, and
meeting rooms.

Due to the lack of senior housing in the West Park area, the former monastery was converted into a senior living
complex now known as Franciscan Village.

Learn How
to Choose a
Comprehensive
Breast Center
When you are concerned about your
breast health, you want the best medical care possible. But how do you know
if a breast center offers the highest
quality of care?
Breast cancer expert Debra Pratt,
MD, offers some valuable advice to
determine how a healthcare facility
measures up. As medical director of
the Breast Health Center at Fairview
Hospital, she has been caring for
breast cancer patients for more than
18 years. She says that a top-notch
facility should offer the following
features and services:
• Accreditation. Breast centers that are
accredited by the National Accreditation
Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) are
required to meet 27 standards, undergo
rigorous evaluation to review their performance, and must pass on-site reviews
every three years.
• Recognition as a Breast Imaging Center of
Excellence. Facilities with this designation
from the American College of Radiology
must perform high-quality mammograms,
ultrasounds and stereotactic biopsies.
• Comprehensive care. Some facilities go
the extra mile for patients by offering
care beyond basic treatment. At Fairview,
we have nurse navigators who help
patients through all stages of care from
diagnosis through treatment including
surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy
and survivorship.
• Fast diagnostic results. Patients with
abnormal mammograms should get a
biopsy quickly, and women with palpable
lumps should receive speedy comprehensive diagnostic mammograms.
• Advanced technology. A high-quality center has state-of-the-art equipment, such
as full-field digital mammography and
computer-aided detection.
• Experienced staff. Look for board-certified
physicians, advanced practice nurses
and highly trained radiologists, breast
surgeons, oncologists, and radiation
oncologists.
• Advanced procedures. Ask if the facility
offers stereotactic and ultrasound-guided
biopsies and cryoablation for benign
fibroadenomas. These procedures do
not require general anesthesia and leave
minimal scars.
• Precise radiation. Preferred centers, like
the one at Fairview, offer high-precision
radiotherapy that increases dosages to
tumors while sparing healthy tissue.
• Comfortable waiting rooms. Your privacy
should be a priority.
• Successful outcomes. Check to see if
your facility’s treatment outcomes meet
or exceed national norms.
“Women who live on Cleveland’s
West Side are fortunate to have
Fairview Hospital nearby,” says Dr.
Pratt. “We are part of the No. 1
cancer program in Ohio, as ranked
by U.S.News & World Report, and
our Breast Health Center has all the
features and services that are most
desirable in a comprehensive breast
care facility.
“First off,” she explains, “our excellence has been demonstrated by our
accreditation by the NAPBC, as well
as our designation as a Breast Imaging
Center of Excellence. We are the only
breast health center on the West Side
to have both of these distinctions.
“We are very proud of the care we
provide,” Dr. Pratt adds. “We have
opened our doors to let outside organizations critique us and help us identify
aspects of care that can be improved.
In addition, we are constantly reviewing our outcomes and making positive
changes to benefit our patients.” The
professionals at Fairview want to limit
the amount of time women spend worrying about diagnostic mammogram
results. Consequently, patients are
informed at the time of mammogram
if a biopsy is needed.
“Patients at highest risk of breast
cancer (category 5 mammogram) are
evaluated by a surgeon and have a
biopsy within five days of the abnormal mammogram,” says Dr. Pratt.
“Our goal is to have 100 percent of
all category 4 and 5 patients seen for
a biopsy within five days, as long as
they do not have medical problems
preventing this and can work it into
their own schedule.”
The Breast Health Center staff
at Fairview is also concerned about
women who have completed cancer
treatments. “As more and more women
survive breast cancer today, we feel it
is important to offer a full spectrum of
care,” says Dr. Pratt. “Treatment may
take six to 12 months, and afterwards,
patients often need help resuming a
healthy lifestyle.
At Fairview’s Breast Health Center
patients receive help with this during
free survivorship classes that educate
them about possible long-term complications and how to improve their
health through exercise and proper
nutrition.
“We are committed to being here for
our patients,” she notes.

Huddle for Safety: Providing
Healing without Harm
N eighborhood
S potlights !
Sports teams use huddles to strategize their next moves.
Fairview Hospital uses daily huddles, too, to increase safety
awareness by identifying and resolving potential issues in
a timely fashion. The huddles are facilitating a stronger
safety culture by keeping the focus on safe work practices
and behaviors.
Every morning, a standing-room crowd of Fairview
Hospital administrators and patient caregivers – including
nurse managers and staff members from radiology, lab, pharmacy, nutrition, protective services, risk management and
others – “huddle” to address safety issues that may have occurred over the last 24 hours. Common questions are: “What
threatened patient safety yesterday?” “Was there something
we could have done to prevent it?” “What surprised you?”
Whether it’s discussing equipment issues, a medication
concern, special visitor requirements, or which patients
are on alert for falls, Fairview Hospital administrators and
caregivers use the information to plan interventions to increase patient safety. Every 24 hours, they gather together
to listen, learn and provide solutions to specific concerns and
problems that have been identified.
“The daily Safety Huddle is used as a stepping stone
for early identification and resolution of issues that could
impact safe patient care,” says Janice Murphy, president of
Fairview Hospital. “This communication network provides
awareness and real-time understanding of what’s happening
on the front line.”
The Safety Huddle’s daily agenda calls for each unit to look
back 24 hours and address any safety or quality issues that
may have occurred, to look ahead to anticipate any issues
that may cause problems in the future, and to follow up on
open issues that have been previously addressed.
Hospital administrators attend to begin their day with
knowledge of potential safety issues throughout the hospital.
“The Safety Huddles help increase safety awareness among
our front-line staff and identify ways to ensure that safety
measures are in place at all times for patients,” says Murphy.
“Their response to identified safety issues is one of taking
action now to reduce consequences later.”
According to Celine Horvath, BSN, RN, CNOR, patient
safety officer at Fairview Hospital, other hospitals across
the country have begun to embrace this form of safety communication with face-to-face encounters and/or phone-in
sessions. Participants feel free to share knowledge without
fear of embarassment or recrimination.
“The concept of teamwork is enhanced by the regular
interaction of administration and all levels of hospital staff,”
says Horvath. “The Safety Huddle causes everyone to think
about safety and raises everyone’s awareness of all types of
risks and dangers to our patients. It has promoted significant
enhancement of our culture of safety.”
As a result, caregivers have renewed confidence in knowing that safety issues are being addressed and are anxious
to come forward and share information that has happened
in the last 24 hours, she says.
“The Safety Huddle is consistent with ‘Patients First,”
the guiding principle of Cleveland Clinic hospitals,” says
Horvath. “It’s our goal is to heal without harm.”

Program. Based on the resiliency theory and
best practices in violence prevention, the program helps young people foster
leadership growth, attachment to the cause of sexual violence prevention, and
project management skills.
Due to the participation in Youth 360, Lauren has been a leader in creating a
club at SJA called The SAVE (Sexual Assault and Violence Education) Campaign.
More than 100 students at the school have become involved in SAVE since the
beginning of the 2011-12 school year. Under Lauren’s leadership, SAVE members
sponsored a collection of various items to donate to the Cleveland Rape Crisis
Center for hospital bags.
These bags were filled with toiletries and clothes and given to women
hospitalized after being raped or assaulted. Many of them are asked to turn over
clothing as evidence. As a result, replacement items are needed for their selfrespect and comfort. Lauren also helped introduce a film at the Cleveland Film
Festival (“TRUST: Second Acts in Young Lives”) and has spoken to the Cleveland
Rape Crisis Center Board about youth involvement in the movement to prevent
violence and sexual assaults through youth education.

Keep Your Letter Carrier Safe
Kamm’s Calendar
According the National Association of Letter Carriers, 170 billion
pieces of mail were delivered last year by letter carriers, six days a week,
to more than 151 million homes and businesses in every city, suburb,
and town in America. The volume is especially heavy during the winter
holidays with cards and packages arriving almost daily.
We depend on our letter carriers. Let’s do all we can in our community
to make their jobs safer. Here are some tips.
• Keep dogs and animals confined and away from mailbox.
• Put the mailbox at a location that keeps the carrier on level ground.
• Put the mailbox away from doors and windows when dogs are present.
• Keep the mailbox away from plants that attract stinging insects.
• Use a mailbox that is large enough to handle the volume of mail you
receive.
• Keep the path to your mailbox clear of trip hazards: tools, hoses, toys, etc.
• If the carrier needs to climb steps, ensure the steps are in good repair
with a sturdy handrail.
• If you are going to paint your porch or steps, use a paint that is designed
for traffic to avoid creating a slick walking surface when wet.
• Keep bushes and trees trimmed so as to not interfere with the carrier.
• Ensure dogs are put away before opening the door for the mail if the
carrier is present.
Watch out for your carrier as they are out working for you!
