Installation
Mounting the EWB
N This unit must be installed in accordance with the National Electrical Code and
with all local codes.
The Extron External Wall Box can be mounted on any interior surface wall.
Knockouts allow for circular conduit or rectangular raceways to be run from top,
bottom, either side, or back of the box. Install the cables into the wall or conduits
before mounting the EWB wall box or installing any devices in the EWB. The
installation instructions apply to all models.
Attaching the EWB to an existing in-wall junction box
This procedure is to be used if an electrical junction box is already installed in
the wall. If a standard junction box is not already installed in the wall, follow the
instructions for installing the EWB on a masonry or nonmasonry wall.

Mount the EWB to an existing junction box as follows:

1.
Align the EWB with the junction box’s opening. Center the EWB in front of
the junction box if possible.
2.
Attach the EWB to the junction box using #6‑32 pan head screws (not
included).

Installing the EWB onto a wall
Mount the EWB onto walls by following the procedure detailed below.
1.
Hold the EWB against the
wall at the
installation location, and use a level tool

as a guide for leveling the enclosure.

Select and mark at least four locations (as shown in the following
pictures) to ensure the strength and stability of the installation. On
nonmasonry walls the EWB must be attached to at least one stud.

If the wall is hollow, mark additional mounting hole locations to add
toggle bolts to increase the installation’s stability and strength.

Set the enclosure out of the way.
3.
Drill pilot holes in the wall at the locations you marked in step 1.

For masonry bolts or wood or sheet metal screws, make the holes 1.75"
(4.4 cm) deep.
For toggle bolts, drill holes through to the hollow part.
N If you make the pilot hole too shallow, the screw head might break off while it is
being fastened into the hole.
If the wall is hollow, you must use toggle bolts. For toggle bolt installation,
drill holes through into the hollow part in the locations indicated with “X”
marks in the above illustration.

Holding the EWB against the wall, align holes in the box with those drilled in
the wall. For each mounting hole, insert a screw and washer or a toggle bolt
assembly.

Hand screw the bolts into the wall. Do not use a power tool to screw in
toggle bolts. Power tools may create too much pressure, causing the Toggle
Kap’s plastic washer to break. The Toggle Kap will then fall into the wall.
Firmly tighten the screws and/or toggle bolts to secure the EWB to the wall.
Grounding
The rear inside panel has a #632 PEM insert for grounding, and a grounding nut is
included with each EWB.
