CITY of SURREY CLASSIFICATION CLASSIFICATION: JOB TITLE: Tradesman 3 (M/F) Millwright SPECIFICATION DEPARTMENT: DIVISION/SECTION: Engineering Operations – Fleet Mechanical I. JOB FUNCTIONS Manual skilled trades tasks involving considerable physical effort and independence in installation, assembly, maintenance and troubleshooting of machinery, equipment and piping/pipefitting. II. TYPICAL DUTIES Dismantles, moves, assembles and installs a variety of machinery and equipment according to good practice and/or layout plans, blueprints, and other drawings or schematics, using hoists, lift trucks, hand and power tools. Constructs foundations for machines. Aligns motors, pumps, and other machines and equipment. Performs gas and electric welding tasks. Operates lathe to grind, file and turn machine parts to dimensional or alignment specifications. Performs vibration analysis, thermography or infrared analysis on equipment and or machinery. Performs other installation and maintenance work, independently or as part of a team, as required. Troubleshoots, investigates failures or malfunctions and takes remedial action . Installs new piping and overhauls and maintains existing piping on location or at the Works Yard shop. Plans ands organizes work projects. Orders materials and/or parts. Provides direction, monitoring and training to semi skilled and/or unskilled workers e.g. apprentices. Assists other employees in performing their duties. Keeps accurate records including daily log of activities. Drives a City vehicle to and from job sites. Performs other job related duties, as assigned. III. WORKING CONDITIONS/EFFORT Heavy manual work in the shop and outdoor work in all types of weather conditions. IV. KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS Communicates effectively both orally and in writing. Understands and effectively carries out oral and written instructions. Effective planning and organization skills. Interprets and works from blueprints, schematic drawings and sketches. Computer literate with a working knowledge of Computerized Maintenance Systems. Works safely and efficiently, independently and in a team setting, with minimal supervision. Thorough knowledge of standard methods, techniques, tools and equipment used in millwright trade. Machine and pipefitting skills. Good knowledge of Vibration Analysis, Thermography, Infrared analysis and Tribology. Thorough knowledge of metals and their properties as they relate to equipment and machinery of the Mechanics Shop and the Pumps & Controls section. Knowledge of City of Surrey and Departmental policies, procedures and standards. Working knowledge of applicable safety regulations. Physical coordination necessary to carry out the duties of the position. V. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Completion of Grade 12 and Millwright Trades Qualification. Minimum 5 years experience as a journeyman millwright in an industrial or public works environment. VI. LICENSES, CERTIFICATES Millwright B.C. and IP Trades Qualifications. Valid B.C. Driver's License with a safe driving record as per the City’s policy.
