Governments have to play a role in
market preparation for the electric
vehicles. Government can provide
monetary incentives, however, nonmonetary incentives are also very
important and the framework conditions
to support the environment for Electric

Role of sustainability is not just winning
communities over with CSR but also
ensuring they have empowerment and

The world is becoming more and more
unpredictable with each passing year and
hence the solutions need to be dynamic.
This indicates that business needs to be
more dynamic and flexible with solutions.
This calls for business leadership to come
together. The world should move towards
increased transparency, management
and accountability.
Peter Bakker

Sustainable Development
SDGs is an equal dialogue in the world with differentiated responsibilities for what happened in the past. They aim at
elimination of poverty around us, reduction of inequalities and sustainability of the planet. Without India, global
efforts to meet Sustainable Development Goals would be an impossible proposition.

The crops chosen to grow in Punjab, i.e. rice and wheat are guzzlers of water. Ground water sources have been
drained to the extent that almost 47% of the wells have gone beyond 10 metres deep in last 20 years. It is feared that
in future we will not have enough water to sustain crops like sugarcane and rice.

Sustainability Summit
Global Goals & Competitiveness
14-15 September 2016: Le Méridien, New Delhi, India
Overview
The year 2016 brings with it a new vision focussing on
the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the
Paris climate deal. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon
has stated that, “The seventeen Sustainable Development
Goals are our shared vision of humanity and a social
contract between the world's leaders and the people. They
are a to-do list for people and planet, and a blue print for
success.”
between Indian business and government on the highlevel Paris negotiations. Post Summit, CII had mounted a
large CEOs delegation led by its President. The
delegation participated in series of events at the COP21
in Paris presenting the Industry perspective.
The earlier editions of the Sustainability Summit have
had captivating deliberations and intellectual insights
that inspired innovation and action. The events
presented sustainability solutions and best practices,
had people share their experiences, success stories and
exchange ideas and had built network to enhance their
learning process.
Turning this vision into reality is primarily the
responsibility of countries, but no country can do it
alone. It requires new innovative partnerships and
models to make it happen. We all have a stake and a
contribution to make including government, business,
civil society and other representatives.
The 11th Sustainability Summit will have an inclusive
focus on some of the key global goals conversing on
important issues related to Biodiversity, Climate Change,
Energy, Food Security, Health, Infrastructure, Water &
Sanitation, etc. Participants at the Summit, will also
deliberate and form the action plan on the role of
business to support the Government of India's strategic
initiatives, such as Digital India, Skill Development, Smart
Cities, Start-up India and Clean India Mission.
CII's annual theme for the year 2016-17 is “Building
National Competitiveness”. CII has outlined six key
enablers for building national competitiveness, i.e.,
“Human development, Ease of doing business,
Corporate integrity & good citizenship, Innovative &
technical capability, Sustainability, and Integrating with
the world”.
It is with this background that, CII-ITC Centre of
Excellence for Sustainable Development is organizing
the 11th edition of India's leading sustainability event. It
is a platform for businesses, governments, thought
leaders and civil society to discuss and share ideas,
provide sustainable and innovative solutions to shape
the future of sustainable world. The theme for the
th
11 Sustainability Summit is “Global Goals &
Competitiveness” and it will have an inclusive focus on
some of the key goals out of the 17 listed SDGs and on
building our national competitiveness.
The Summit will feature distinguished speakers &
thought leaders from across the globe, captains of
Indian industry & international CEOs, policy makers –
ministers & bureaucrats sharing their inspiring
perspective and intellectual insights on transforming
our world and achieving the 2030 agenda for
Sustainable Development.
The Summit will have a wide spread of keynote
addresses, plenaries, panel discussions, debates, master
classes, workshops, parallel sessions and immense
networking opportunities spread over two full days on
14-15 September 2016.

Confederation of Indian Industry
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) works to create and sustain an environment conducive to the
development of India, partnering industry, Government, and civil society, through advisory and
consultative processes.
CII is a non-government, not-for-profit, industry-led and industry-managed organization, playing a
proactive role in India's development process. Founded in 1895, India's premier business association has
over 8000 members, from the private as well as public sectors, including SMEs and MNCs, and an indirect
membership of over 200,000 enterprises from around 240 national and regional sectoral industry bodies.
CII charts change by working closely with Government on policy issues, interfacing with thought leaders,
and enhancing efficiency, competitiveness and business opportunities for industry through a range of
specialized services and strategic global linkages. It also provides a platform for consensus-building and
networking on key issues.
Extending its agenda beyond business, CII assists industry to identify and execute corporate citizenship
programmes. Partnerships with civil society organizations carry forward corporate initiatives for integrated
and inclusive development across diverse domains including affirmative action, healthcare, education,
livelihood, diversity management, skill development, empowerment of women, and water, to name a few.
The CII theme for 2016-17, Building National Competitiveness, emphasizes Industry's role in partnering
Government to accelerate competitiveness across sectors, with sustained global competitiveness as the
goal. The focus is on six key enablers: Human Development; Corporate Integrity and Good Citizenship; Ease
of Doing Business; Innovation and Technical Capability; Sustainability; and Integration with the World.
With 66 offices, including 9 Centres of Excellence, in India, and 9 overseas offices in Australia, Bahrain, China,
Egypt, France, Germany, Singapore, UK, and USA, as well as institutional partnerships with 320 counterpart
organizations in 106 countries, CII serves as a reference point for Indian industry and the international

Our world is entering an age of unprecedented risks and opportunities. There is immense pressure on our
natural resources, carbon emissions are alarmingly high, and inequalities are increasing. The environment is
suffering as are the people. In light of this, sustainability has become a major concern for businesses. It
pressurizes them to adapt accordingly so that their practices meet the need of the changing environment.
That's where we come in. We nurture our clients to compete, expand opportunity and excel in today's dynamic
business environments. The Centre works to create and sustain an environment conducive to the growth of
business, partnering business and government alike through training, advisory and consultative services.
These services comprise capacity building and training programmes and workshops related to environment
policies, management systems, management frameworks, performance assessment, sustainability reporting,
stakeholder engagement, sustainability assurance, climate change, sustainable business portfolios and
business model innovation to name a few.
Today, India faces multiple challenges. The major challenges are economic, social and environmental in nature.
In the last two decades, India has seen tremendous growth. However, the beneficiaries of this growth are but a
small section of the country's population. There is an ever-widening gap between the haves and the have nots.
The majority of the population remains at the periphery of development, while the rest lean towards the other
extreme, that of immense wealth. There are disparities amongst regions, states, sectors and communities. This
exclusion from the benefits of economic growth development has rendered people steeped in poverty with
very low standards of living.
The environmental challenges that the world and India, especially as a developing economy, faces are
depleting natural resources, environmental degradation, sky rocketing GHG emissions and consequently,
climate change. The combination of these economic, social and environmental challenges could prove to be
detrimental to the future growth of India as a country and as a sustainable economy. The Centre works to
mitigate these problems and engender a transformation in the way business is conducted.
In order to do so and achieve sustainable, equitable and inclusive growth, the Centre seeks to bring
transformation through a complete programme of policy advocacy, knowledge creation, knowledge
dissemination and 'on-ground'model projects. The Centre works with businesses and the government to
bring about this transformation and address the various issues of sustainability, environmental degradation,
climate change, inclusion etc. The training and consulting services we provide facilitate companies in their
sustainability efforts.
