Objectives

This is a basic course in discrete mathematics. We will focus on elementary logic, proof theory and combinatorics. By the end of the semester, the student should have a solid understanding of the methods and concepts covered.

Textbook and Online Support

You will be required to have materials from McGraw-Hill Education which include the CONNECT program needed to complete homework. The options for purchasing are

Bookstore.

Your bookstore has a package available that includes the print book and the Connect Code. The

Online.

All digital (no print book). You can purchase Connect separately which includes an ebook and access to the online homework. I strongly suggest you consider this option.

• Click the Register Now Button.

• Enter your access code if you bought the package from the bookstore, select Buy Online , or you can Start the Complimentary 2 week Trial

Course Material

We will cover most of the first seven chapters of the textbook. If time allows, we might cover some material from chapters

8 and 9.

Important

There will not be lectures during the week of July 11 to 15.

Communications with Students

Skype Office Hours

For those students registered in the online session, I will have office hours on Skype every Wednesday from 2 to 4 pm

(Tucson time) My skype contact name is andres.larrain.hubach. The teaching assistants of this course will also conduct office hours on Skype.

Piazza

You can post questions on Piazza. The TA’s will be in charge of answering these. In order to verify enrollment, students registered in the online section MUST post a message in Piazza during the first week

Homework

(200 points) We will use CONNECT by McGraw-Hill. Homework will be posted regularly and it will be intense. If you have questions you should contact me or the TA’s.

In-Class Exams

(200 points) The two in-class exams are scheduled for June 24 and July 19. Each exam is worth 100 points.

Final Exam

(200 points) The final exam is scheduled for August 2. The exam regulations of the university will be strictly followed

Missed Exam Policy

Students who are unable to attend an exam should notify their instructor as soon as possible. Arrangements for a make-up test will be considered on a case by case basis. Make-up exams will be administered only at the discretion of the instructor.

If a student is allowed to make up a missed exam, (s)he must take it at a mutually arranged time. No further opportunities will be extended. Failure to contact the instructor as stated above will result in a grade of zero on the exam.

Grading Disputes

Any grading disputes must be addressed within one week after an exam or homework has been returned.

Grades

The total number of points available on tests and homework is 600. A final score between 540 and 600 points is an A.

A final score between 480 and 539 points is a B. A final score between 420 and 479 points is a C. Between 360 and 419 points is a D. Less than 359 points is an E.

Examity

In this class, if you are registered for the online session, you will take your tests remotely and they will be proctored by a service called Examity. A Student Quick-Guide will be provided on how to use Examity. Before you can begin proctored assessments, you must sign up for an Examity account. This requires two steps:

1. Access the Examity system through the D2L course site, by clicking the Examity link found within your course content. This link will direct you to the Examity dashboard.

2. From your Examity dashboard, setup a profile. You will need to

• upload a CatCard or Government ID (State Drivers License or Identification Card)

• you will need to bring this same ID with you each time you take a text with Examity

• answer three security questions

• enter a keystroke biometric signature

• select your time zone

• and confirm your name, email address, and phone number

Before scheduling and taking your assessment, please review these Examity System Requirements

• Desktop computer or laptop (not tablet or phone)

• Webcam and microphone (built-in or external)

• Connection to network with internet speed of at least 3Mbps

• Operating system of Windows XP Windows 10, Mac OS X 10.8 10.11

Attendance/Administrative Drops

Daily attendance is expected from every student. Students who miss the first two class meetings will be administratively dropped unless they have made other arrangements. In addition, students with more than 3 unexcused absences may be administratively dropped from the course. (See Administrative Drop Policy at http://catalog.arizona.edu/2015-

16/policies/classatten.htm) If you need to miss class for unavoidable circumstances, contact your instructor as soon as possible. Please note the following:

• All holidays or special events observed by organized religions will be honored for those students who show affiliation with that particular religion,

• Absences pre-approved by the UA Dean of Students (or Deans designee) will be honored.

It is the students responsibility to notify the instructor in advance of an absence related to religious observation or an activity for which a Deans excuse has been granted, and to arrange for how any missed work will be handled.

Academic Integrity

Expected Classroom Behavior

Students should turn off all electronic devices during class unless the device is deemed necessary for the class by the instructor. This includes, but is not limited to cell phones, mp3 players, and laptops. If you have a disability-related accommodation that involves the use of a computer during class, please discuss this with your instructor in advance.

Students withdrawing from the course

Last day to drop without a W is June 10. Last day to withdraw online through UAccess is June 26. Between June 27 and July 2, all registration changes require both instructor and dean signatures. The final withdrawal deadline is July 7.

For this last deadline, students must have an extraordinary reason for approval.
