A er a disappoin ng 2013 campaign saw the Tritons – depleted by injuries and dismissals – struggled to a 13-36 overall record, the 2014 opener has been circled in red. “Last year was a long year. We had some things happen that were out of our control and some difficult decisions had to be made,” said Sandin, who is entering his fourth season as head coach. “It’s never fun to go from ‘firstto-worst,’ but we have a team full of girls who are ready to get Iowa Central back to the level The Tritons will look to bounce back in 2014. A strong reit belongs.” turning group of sophomores and talented freshmen should Leading the way for Iowa Central is a talhave Iowa Central back in contenƟon. ented group of eight sophomores and eleven freshmen. The mix provided strong results in the fall season and posted a lot of improvement in winter workouts. “This has been such a fun team to be around every day. They work so hard on and off the field, they are on a mission. Some people threw dirt on our program last season and this bunch is ready to show them that we are back,” said Sandin. That determina on and work ethic has started with a talented group of sophomores that are not ready for a repeat of 2013. The Tritons return three All-Region XI performers from last year’s team and all eight have experience as starters. They have mixed with a talented group of freshmen that includes five AllState performers and boasts five Iowa State So ball Championships. Infield The majority of new faces will be on the infield this season, especially up the middle. Freshmen Taylor Barne and Emilee Dorpinghaus have taken the reins at shortstop and second base respec vely. Expect Dorpinghaus, an Ankeny prep, to be a fixture near the top of the lineup and Barne , an Indianola grad, to be a threat in the bo om third of the order. Iowa Central has some more depth at the corners. Sophomores NiCole Dobernecker and Morgan Fisher return a combined 42 starts. A finally healthy Dobernecker will spend most of her me at first base and be a staple in the middle of the line-up. Fisher hit .333 and started 23 games last season and will compete for me at third as well as at first base. Fellow sophomore Haley Rustvold will also be in the mix on the infield a er an All-Region campaign last year that saw her at third and second base. Rustvold, who ba ed .377 with eight doubles, will also be in the ou ield this season. A pair of freshman will also join the mix at the corners. Canadian freshman Casey May Huff will primarily play third base but may also see me at shortstop. Her potent bat will also be featured in the middle of the Triton order. Kenzie Shelgren, a freshman from Humboldt, will also push for me at first base a er a strong fall and winter season. “We’ve got some op ons on the infield,” said Sandin. “We should be a very good defensive team and our infield will be the reason why. We have a talented bunch of kids that can really pick it on the infield.” Ouƞield The Tritons return the most depth in the ou ield. All-Region XI performers Chelsy Krantz and Ka e Newbury will return to roam in center and le field this year. Krantz returns to centerfield a er ba ng .500 last season with 61 hits and 19 stolen bases. Newbury returns to le field a er pos ng a .391 average with three doubles and two triples. Both will also solidify the top of the order for the Tritons. The ba le for right field could be one that goes on all season long. Fellow sophomore Rustvold will compete with local freshmen Josie Heesch (St. Edmond) and Lexie Miller (Eagle Grove). Coach Sandin says whoever isn’t star ng right field could very well be the designated players. Both players have made huge improvements throughout the winter. Heesch offers more pop in her bat while Miller con nues Eagle Grove’s pipeline of speed to the Triton program. Also expect to see freshman Allie Ingalls in right field when she isn’t pitching as well as sophomore Kaitlynn Morrison who saw ac on in 17 games in right field. Jenny Schmidt, a freshman from Wisconsin, will also split me between catching and right field this year. “We have a lot of op ons out there,” said Sandin. “We have a lot of kids who can play and it is going to come down to what we need that day or who is swinging the ho est bat.” Catcher First Team All-Region XI performer Sammie Hildreth returns to handle the Triton pitching staff. The sophomore led the Tritons with 14 doubles and eight home runs last season while playing stellar defense behind the plate, throwing out 16-of-22 would-be base stealers. Two freshmen will be behind Hildreth this year. Sarah McCoy and Jenny Schmidt will both see ac on behind the dish. McCoy, who was part of back-to-back state championship teams at BCLUW, is also a candidate for playing me at designated player. Schmidt will also see me in the ou ield. “We play 60 games in a season, all three are going to see a lot of game me this spring,” said Sandin. “Both Sara and Jenny are talented catchers and we have no issues with them back there.” Pitcher Three quarters of Iowa Central’s pitching staff are new. Sophomore Paige Prokop, who joined the program in April last year, has made massive gains a er a full year of college so ball. She will join Allie Inn galls, the 2A Iowa Player of the Year for North Union, to form the TTritons’ rittons 1 1-2 -2 p punch unch iin n the the circle. circle. They realized that this fall and it really made a difference. They’ve put a lot of work in with Coach Doyle as well and have all made strides this winter,” said Sandin. Schedule The 2014 schedule has a new look for Iowa Central as its first five dates will be played inside this year. A er Mother Nature wreaked havoc on the schedule last season, causing Iowa Central to cancel five dates and play 14 games in eight days leading up to the Region XI Tournament, Sandin tried to avoid her as much as possible. “Outside of Florida, there weren’t too many nice days to play last spring. We were lucky enough to play twice inside last year and when we were shoveling snow on May 1, I decided to get as many early dome dates as possible,” said Sandin. Iowa Central will host three dates in the Irish Dome in Rosemount, Minn., opening with the Indoor Classic on Feb. 13 and 14. The Tritons will play St. Thomas JV on Feb. 21 and Region IX champion Dakota County on March 11 in the Irish Dome. The Tritons will also play three games inside the Rochester Bubble on March 8. A er that, the Tritons will head south for their annual spring trip. A er playing North Arkansas on March 14 in Harrison, Ark., the Tritons head to Coca Beach, Fla., for five more dates. It will be the first me Iowa Central has played in Cocoa Beach since 2008. “I’m very excited about the first half of our schedule. Our hope is that we will be able to bank 11 dates without worrying about weather and hopefully this will keep us from scrambling at the end of the season,” said Sandin. Iowa Central will test Mother Nature early though as it is scheduled to host Graceland JV for its home opener on March 4 at Harlan Rogers Complex. “Our fingers are crossed for that one,” said Sandin. “Mother Mother Nature Nature owes owes us us one.” one.” A er Iowa Central re returns eturns ffrom rom FFlorida lorida it it jumps jumps rright ight iinto nto IICCAC CCAC play, play, which which figures gures tto o once once again again be be one Central opens one of of the the toughest toughest conferences conferences in in the the na na on. on. We want teams to hate to play against us, not because we are a cheap or dirty team, but because we take extra bases, steal bases, make the right play and cause frustra on to our opponents. By being aggressive, we accomplish our goal. We strive not to be a one-dimensional offensive team. We will use speed to set up the rest of our offense. We expect our ba ers to work the count, understand and recognize all offensive situa ons and above all, swing HARD! There are mes when we need a home run, a stolen base, a sacrifice bunt or even a ground ball to the right side to complete our offensive goal. We expect each of our players to be able to complete these tasks when called upon. We as coaches do not believe in calling every pitch, dicta ng every situa on or making every single call. We want our teams to have an understanding and knowledge of the game that allows them to react during the game. If you feel a drag bunt may be the best op on, drop it down. If you think you can take an extra base on a hit to the ou ield, take it. We want to have nine girls on the field all thinking inside the game and reac ng to every situa on on the field without us forcing them to do so. Finally, the game of so ball is just that… a game. Games should be fun. We do not hold five-hour prac ces. Our prac ce mes range from two to two-and-a-half hours. We do not stand around; we are always doing something to get be er. We explain the reasoning behind why we do the things we do. We teach them because we want all of our girls to understand the nuances of so ball. We truly believe that a coach has the power to create the passion of playing and also take that passion away. We think we create. We want an en re team pulling and roo ng for each other. We want a dugout full of players and coaches with a refuse-to-lose a tude, willing to fight the other team for every strike, out and inning un l the game is over.
